Guest Video Blog: Freddie Spencer On A Thrilling Race At Assen, in association with Motor Sport Magazine, is proud to feature the rider insights of 1983 and 1985 500cc world champion Freddie Spencer. After every MotoGP race, Fast Freddie will share what he saw and learned from the race.

In this edition of Freddie Spencer's video blog, the former world champion takes a look back at one of the greatest premier class races in history, the 88th Dutch TT at Assen. Spencer starts off talking about the possibility of bringing F1 to Assen, and the reasons not to be too enamored of the idea. He looks back at his experiences of riding at Assen, at what was then a much longer track with the magical North Loop still intact.

Freddie Spencer then shifts his focus to Dani Pedrosa, and the Spaniard's recent struggles and distractions, and how they play into his riding. He points to similar problems for Franco Morbidelli and Tom Luthi at the Marc VDS team, especially for their process of adapting to a MotoGP bike.

Fast Freddie then goes on to discuss qualifying, and what happened in that incredible race, with so many strong riders getting involved. He gives his opinion on how Marc Marquez managed to do so well in the race, and also discusses how Alex Rins rode with such aggression on what was a great weekend for Suzuki. He also takes a quick look at the incident between Andrea Dovizioso and Valentino Rossi that cost them both the podium.

This is Freddie Spencer's best video blog I've seen so far. Interesting insights and viewpoints, even though some have of course partly been said before elsewhere in the whole aftertalk about that amazing race.

Great also to hear him talk about his memories of Assen when the track was still in all its full glory, with that magnificant northern loop, the amazing kinks in the Veenslang back 'straight' and all those banked corners. The clueless people who butchered it for the sake of selling a piece of land for a pointless event hall and a parking lot should be put in jail, and then some.

Like most people I agree that having F1 there would cause even more damage to the track's character, with pushing back grandstands more than has already been done since the time the track was still 6 km long, and getting more asphalt all over the place. Already we can see that since there's been a couple of those areas, there is much more running off track, cutting corners and then the dicussions over who should be punished and in what way, making the race result more and more a jury matter instead of a straightforward fight to finish line. Plus all the extra risky situations by riders leaving the track and then entering again at some point, in a different line to everybody else. And like I've said before: turning the track into a giant asphalt area with a bunch of painted lines determining the (preferred) track to follow, for me makes it all look more and more artificial. Like it doesn't really matter whether or not you stay on track. All it does is get you points for faultless execution. I don't like that trend. Hopefully at some point it is reversed, when more people realize that it is tracks without lots of asphalt run-off that usually have the least crashes. It's all got to do with the way the human mind works, which is what riders' behaviour determines.
