After the threat of rain, World Supersport would start on a dry track, and Andrea Locatelli could take the title with a win.
World Superbike's debut race at Catalunya is twenty laps of the Barcelona track with the track at a 28ºC temperature. Alvaro Bautista and Michael Ruben Rinaldi, two of the lightest riders, chose to start with the SCX Superpole race tyre.
Raffaele De Rosa entered World Supersport Superpole knowing his qualifying wouldn't change his grid position as he would start the race from the pit lane as a penalty for crashing into Jules Cluzel last time out.
World Superbike qualifying was twenty five minutes to set a fast lap on a track the series has never raced at and has had only one dry session this weekend. As this morning's weather dried up, slick tyres were fitted in anticipation of dry qualifying.
As track conditions improved, after a damp Superbike session, Isaac Viñales went quickest in the afternoon's session, ahead of Lucas Mahias, but nobody was able to improve on their morning's dry times.
