2020 Estoril World Superbike Race One Result: So, What Happens Now?

The race would be twenty one laps of Estoril, the shortest track of the year, with a long grid straight. With a track temperature of 29ºC, everyone used the same rear tyre, apart from Loris Baz who opted for the SCX. Sylvain Barrier would not start after a concussion in the Superpole session.

A wave of blue bikes washed out of the pits as World Supersport qualifying opened up with the Yamahas leaving as one. Without qualifying tyres, hot laps can come at any point of the session.

With the championship able to be decided today, World Superbike qualifying at Estoril, the shortest track of the year, also has lap records up for grabs after a 27-year absence. There would be five unrelated crashes in the first half of the session.

In a session where everyone improved on their morning's time, Scott Redding came out on top, ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu and Loris Baz. Jonathan Rea was fourth-quickest.

2020 Estoril World Superbike FP1 Result: Redding Leads Gerloff

Scott Redding, with a purely mathematical chance of taking the title from Jonathan Rea, opened up the weekend at Estoril with the quickest time in the morning's session at a track hardly any of the riders have raced at. Behind Redding, there were four Yamahas, headed by Garrett Gerloff and Loris Baz, between him and Jonathan Rea who needs only one point this weekend to take his sixth title.

Estoril Replaces Misano On 2020 WorldSBK Calendar

The 2020 WorldSBK calendar has been given another reshuffle. After the Argentina round was dropped for 2020 last week, this week, the race at Misano has been removed from the calendar, to be replaced by a race at the Estoril circuit in Portugal.
With the removal of Argentina, it made no sense to hold the Misano round on its originally scheduled date in November, but it seems that other factors, such as money and the danger of another flare up of the coronavirus, may have played a roll. Instead, the Estoril circuit, near the Portuguese capital Lisbon, has been placed on the calendar, with a round to be held from 16th-18th of October.
Estoril has previously featured on both the WorldSBK and MotoGP calendars, with MotoGP last visiting in 2012. Since then, no world championship motorcycle series has visited the track, though reports from other series suggest the track is in need of resurfacing, with low grip and a lot of bumps.
