World Superbike race one was twenty laps of Portimao, with no Pirelli SCX tyres available for safety reasons. The track was 43ºC with 25ºC air temperature. Toprak Razgatlioglu leads Jonathan Rea by twenty points in the championship going into this round.
Toprak Razgatlioglu led Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam into turn one, but Scott Redding went round the outside to slot into third place. Rea took the lead in turn two, but Razgatlioglu took it back at turn five. After a lap, nobody had a significant gap, and Rea wasn't able to take the lead back in the beginning of the lap. Jonathan Rea took the lead but Toprak Razgatlioglu pushed him aside a turn later, in turn thirteen.
Scott Redding set the fastest lap behind the gloves-off duel in front of him as the leading trio broke free. At turn thirteen, Rea pushed past Razgatlioglu, setting the fastest lap but the leading pair were overhauled by Scott Redding who blasted past into turn one for the lead. Rea and Razgatlioglu swapped paint behind the leader. Rea passed Razgatlioglu into turn eleven and tried to get past Redding.
At the start of lap five, Rea slapped the rear of his bike about into turn one, dropping him to third place, but he took the lead into turn thirteen. On the last corner, turn fifteen, he lost the lead and his grip, slipping his rear tyre, sliding the bike and him off the track, his bike flipping over and over as Rea slid the length of the gravel trap. Rea looked more upset than hurt.
Scott Redding led Toprak Razgatlioglu around, with Leon Haslam inheriting a podium place over three seconds off the leaders. Scott Redding set the fastest lap on lap seven, a 1'41.507, as his teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi took third place off Leon Haslam, but Haslam was able to take the place back, pushing Rinaldi wide. Down the straight, Leon Haslam was pushed from third to sixth as Loris Baz, Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Alvaro Bautista piled past him down the straight. Loris Baz led the second group six seconds off Redding and Razgatlioglu.
With Jonathan Rea out of the picture, Toprak Razgatlioglu looked a lot happier to sit in second place, no longer scrapping for the lead at every opportunity. Rea was taken to the medical centre, standard procedure after a crash like that.
At half race distance, Toprak Razgatlioglu took the lead into turn one on the brakes, but Scott Redding was keeping up throughout the lap. The fight for the last podium place, seven seconds behind Redding, was led by Alvaro Bautista, ahead of Loris Baz and Michael van der Mark as Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Leon Haslam went wide and let Andrea Locatelli past.
On lap thirteen of twenty, Scott Redding remained within touch, under a second behind Toprak Razgatlioglu, but the Yamaha rider slowly started pulling out a couple of tenths of a second, Razgatlioglu the only rider under 1'42. A lap later, Redding closed back up, the only rider under 1'42. Behind the leading pair, eight seconds further back, Loris Baz led Alvaro Bautista as Andrea Locatelli clipped Michael van der Mark's rear to Kate both riders out of action. As van der Mark ran to his bike, he shoved Locatelli aside, making it clear where he put the blame for the crash. The incident was immediately put under investigation.
Scott Redding closed up to Toprak Razgatlioglu on lap sixteen, crossing the line to start lap seventeen under a tenth of a second behind to start the last three laps. Another lap and Redding kept showing Razgatlioglu that he was right behind him, powering past him down the straight to start lap eighteen, but Razgatlioglu lifted Redding's leg with his front tyre as he pushed past into turn one on the brakes. Alvaro Bautista led Loris Baz almost nine seconds further back with Michael Ruben Rinaldi, Leon Haslam and Garrett Gerloff fighting over fifth.
Scott Redding took the lead into turn one of the penultimate lap, but Razgatlioglu held a tighter line on the exit strike back. The last lap started with Razgatlioglu in the lead, but not by much. Loris Baz and Alvaro Bautista swapped places a couple of times over nine seconds off the lead battle.
Toprak Razgatlioglu was able to stretch out enough of a lead over Redding to cross the line as Alvaro Bautista crashed out on the last corner, mimicking Rea's earlier crash. As Bautista crashed out, Loris Baz took the last step of the podium with Michael Ruben Rinaldi, Leon Haslam and Garrett Gerloff over two seconds further back.
Toprak Razgatlioglu took time out of his schedule of cool down lap stoppies to grab a broom and clean a stretch of green paint before he headed to Parc Fermé. Jonathan Rea was assessed by the medical centre and, after multiple contusions and a left elbow abrasion, will be assessed for fitness before warm-up tomorrow. Scott Redding thought the fight between Rea and Razgatlioglu crossed the line a few times, and he wasn't happy with Razgatlioglu's hard lunge into turn one.
Toprak Razgatlioglu's win put him forty five points clear of Jonathan Rea with Scott Redding only thirty four points off Rea.
