Are folks ready to pick their 2022 Top 5? We are going to add tie breaker alternates to be used only in case of identical Top 5's. Identical Top 6's will not be allowed. If there aren't repeats, we will drop whatever is extra for the sake of ease and simplicity. Our sincerely most helpful best backmarker ever Ivanhoe has to do spreadsheet updates, so we will go easy on him.

Timing, we will start here after Valencia. Get yours in early since there won't be repeats. We get a BRIEF peek at bikes at the very first Test after Valencia, and then we close when full and before Winter Test #2.

Make sense? Great! Let us know if you have any questions. All are welcome. Just try thinking of your Top 5+1 and why...it is an interesting challenge!

Oh lordy, Cloverleaf and his Factory Duc riders must have 2021 Top 3 in the bag now eh? Marc let me down, Quarty finally crashed out, and lone Mir did me well. Am I losing P2 Ivanhoe?

So, it is total points based on the five we choose?

Thank you Ivanhoe and 'Shrink.

...illness kept me from work and now a lot of catching up to do. Standings to come tomorrow!

PS: 5+1 count me in. Easy like Sunday morning 😊

Ah well, work can wait. Standings cannot!

I believe you called it 'shrink. With Marc ruled out of Valencia your 55 point deficit cannot be overturned (just a max of 25 should Joan win), same for D999's numbers.

So, drumroll, with one round to go looks like we have a winner! Congratulations Cloverleaf 🏆

Now how do we get together, hand out prizes, and drink bubbly?

Thanks, Ivanhoe. Thanks, 'shrink. Thanks friends. It's been a fun challenge. Enriched the season. I think everyone has enjoyed. Frankly, I'm really not worthy. Stuck my neck out and got lucky while the unexpected struck elsewhere. But I'll take it all the same - my comeuppance awaits next season. Cheers.

It was a brilliant set of picks! I remember seeing Bagnaia and Miller for you a yr ago and scoffed. "He must just love Ducatis." Nope. You nailed it. Especially with Pecco.

Always held that Pecco had latent potential. Two yrs ago I was still seeing getting on a Ducati as a career festering move. "If only he had started on a Yamaha or Suzuki."

In a way Bagnaia and Maverick have done an opposite season. How many times, and for how many years, have folks been saying Vinales could be about to get it all together and burst forth? Lots of people tipped him. I thought his arrival at Factory Blue was a likely flourish. And the two bikes seemed to have done the same swerves of opposites. Lots of people picked MV12, and it was interesting.

Pecco and his latent talent arrived when the balanced Red bike did. What a joy to behold! It turns great. Not as physically demanding as it was. Bagnaia's riding style on the Ducati? Brand new. So beautiful! Very dynamic and cat like, more front wheel oriented than anyone has been on that bike. Smooth and consistent. Economical. Martin does something similar but less smooth. Bagnaia caught most of us by surprise, eh?

I don't think it was luck Cloverleaf. Quartararo did the business despite lack of motor. Miller was always thereabouts, best bike, and PECCO! Genius.

Curious how you will do next season. Over here STILL is a continued Marc Marquez puzzler. I thought he would be in the top 3 mix much earlier, just based on fitness (thought the bike would stay rubbish, it actually got much better). Was debating putting him 2nd or 3rd, was sure on Quarty and Mir. But at the time there was a flourish of talk that he was never returning to form, even that he could be done racing. Out of sheer pass and vinegar put him first. Fully expected The Marc of old after Summer break. This time though, rather than no one in second and a fight behind that gap (Zzzzzz snore), there would be Quarty and Mir right in there and with a head start. Nope. A number of us had some reason or other to go with Marc. He did fairly well! STILL a tough call for 2022!

Even if you hate the praise, viva Cloverleaf,  Pecco, Quarty and Jack.

P.S. via the way I was tabulating Lilyvani drafts past D9's for the last podium spot via placing Fabio higher. Good picks you two!

TZandRD and Rholcomb, I was with you on Zarco leap frogging Miller this yr. If we did Top 5, he was my Duc. I was letting Vinales go though, and it was a bit sad to do so. You two did well rounding out the front pack.

Folks, we've been entertained by the sports gods and come out smiling. Well, at least I have. Thinking about this, part of that fun was picking 3 rather than 5. Yes it means one can fall by the wayside early on (case in point) but it is just that much harder to do, isn't it?

Even though darned certain about Rins (dark horse became ever darker) and Marc, picking #3 was the tricky one. I had Yamaha (their 2020 was baaad), Ducati's Zarco and Pecco, as well as Mir to choose between. Picking 3 out of those would have been less fun. Picking Morbidelli was a darned thing after that 2019 cycle proved to be done, and knee injury and surgery made it even worse. But having picked let's say Morbi, Mir, Zarco/Pecco for 3-5 would have changed the odds.

Also, it might actually make the top 5 much more similar (we had quite a small group of top 3 riders).

But, never too stubborn to try a new idea, so we might/could do a top 3 AND top 5? Perhaps even bring in substitute riders when injuries happen (Morbidelli, Marc)? Well, don't want to overcomplicate but firm belief that top 3 might be more fun 😊

For those of us with a calcified pineal gland, getting a better look at the 2022 bikes might create more diversity among the choices. Say after the Sepang tests.

OK, still planning stage - keep the ideas coming! We only have a short time (a week). Will take all these ideas in and toss out a best go at it for 2022.

Ivanhoe, there is likely to be far less diversity regardless for 2022 - it was unusual how open the Championship looked a yr ago. Expect LOTS of people to go for the same few (showing the cards is ok if it is open knowledge, I have Marc, Pecco and Quarty). This needs consideration. Hmmm...

Bonus for in order was suggested. So was top Rookie. Top independent rider is an idea. Diversifying may be important this time. Thanks Ivanhoe for making it work here! It is a fun way to get us more involved. The off-season especially needs a boost, which is where this came in last yr. We can share more links to videos to enjoy and discuss too.

Thanks again Ivanhoe & 'Shrink. No spreadsheet, but here's the picks for rider championship:

Marquez  7

Zarco      6

Fabio       2

Miller, Mav, Mir, Franco, Rins   1

Nobody picked Pecco!

Is my #1 for 2022 😁

I expected a bunch of Ducatis together for fourth in 2021 and very dearly mixed up Quartararo for Morbidelli and Rins for Mir, settling me solidly in the last place all year. Dusting off and polishing crystal ball in prep for our 22 predictions. Will it be Mir over Rins in 22 again? Where will Morbidelli end up? Jorge Martin? Bestia? Miller and Zarco? And will the Marc recover? What about that Honda and Aprilia, in top 5 over one season? A top 10 is easier than a top 5 😂

Another statistic. Not a single podium top three finish in the championship this year was identically in order to anyone's top three picks. Yet. There's still Sunday's race.

My predictions turned out lower mid-pack. But I gave no one the kiss of death so that's good.

Rins was wishful thinking, wanted Alex to get it together, thought Suzi may have done better. Mir is +96 over Rins, which still only gives me 500. Never mind I will save any luck I may have for the roads.

Pecco is looking good and improving. Jack Miller not as much. Casey may well help Jack realize some more of his potential.

Marc Marquez the medical mystery? MM93 will improve using willpower & come back from the head knock & eye injury. Probably not the 2019 Marquee Marc but I think he will be fast again.

Next years picks, too early to say, ideally that would be something to ponder during the off season.

Five plus one after the Valencia test. You're on!

One idea, if someone wants to put out a less formal and tabulated tipping, Thursday before a race (on David's Preview article) could be "Guess the podium Sunday."
