Race two of World Supersport this weekend would be missing Niki Tuuli and Andy Verdoia. The track was dry after this morning's rain but was only 18ºC. Drops of rain on the sighting lap threatened to mix things up.
Nicolo Bulega beat Dominique Aegerter to turn one, but Lorenzo Baldassarri pushed Aegerter aside, letting Can Oncu follow him through. Oncu and Baldassarri swapped back and forth behind Bulega's Ducati. Into turn one of lap two, Baldassarri outbraked Bulega to take the lead and Oncu pushed Bulega to third in turn three. Federico Caricasulo set the fastest lap after passing Aegerter and Bulega as the red-on-white flags started flapping. Jules Cluzel and Stefano Manzi pitted in with technical problems. Filippo Fuglini crashed out and was ridden over by Sander Kroeze but it wasn't enough to bring out the red flags. Fuglini and Kroeze were both taken to the medical centre.
Lap four, and Can Oncu led Federico Caricasulo, Nicolo Bulega, Lorenzo Baldassarri, Yari Montella and Dominique Aegerter. Montella missed turn one on lap five and nearly crashed returning to the track on the damp kerbs, and he reduced the lead group to five bikes. Glenn van Straalen in sixth place started to close the gap to the leading five, setting a fastest lap of 1'41.305 as Caricasulo took and lost the lead into turn one and went off track into turn six with a mechanical issue. Caricasulo pulled into the pits and had his team work on his gear change.
Lap seven, and the rain was picking up. Lorenzo Baldassarri led Nicolo Bulega, Can Oncu and Dominique Aegerter with Glenn van Straalen closing up. Can Oncu pulled alongside Nicolo Bulega, making a broad windbreak in front of Dominique Aegerter who tucked in and passed the pair into turn one but a few turns later, Oncu pushed Aegerter aside letting himself and Bulega pass Aegerter, pushing him back to fourth.
Rain was now reported in all sectors and the pace dropped. Can Oncu seized his moment into turn six of lap nine and took the lead from Baldassarri.
At half race distance, Can Oncu led Lorenzo Baldassarri and Dominique Aegerter, but Aegerter took second place into turn one. Nicolo Bulega was further back, being hounded by Oli Bayliss, Adrian Huertas and Glenn van Straalen. Only Aegerter and Huertas had the harder front tyre which could be decisive. Van Straalen fell off the fight for fourth place as Bulega and Bayliss swapped back and forth.
The start of lap twelve, the end of which would be two-thirds of race distance, Baldassarri passed Oncu into turn one and Aegerter took advantage into turn three to take second place. Bulega caught Oncu, bringing Bayliss and Huertas with him to make the leading group six bikes long, only for Ondrej Vostatek and Glenn van Straalen to catch them.
At turn nine, Aegerter took the lead from Baldassarri only to lose it into turn one of lap fourteen. Kyle S with started carving through the pack as his pace increased to a second a lap quicker, carving from tenth to sixth ion a couple of laps.
At the start of lap fifteen, riders slid weirdly into turn one after a massive bunched up slipstream down the straight, rearranging the order to Aegerter, Baldassarri, Smith, Oncu, Montella, and Bayliss as a leading group of six bikes. Kyle Smith tried to take second round the outside of Baldassarri at the start of lap sixteen as three Yamahas held the podium places. Smith took a tighter line round the parabolic to take second place from Baldassarri. Nicolo Bulega bashed into Simon Jespersen on the inside to take both of them out, another racing incident with two riders trying to contest the same patch of apex.
With two laps left, Aegerter pushed the lead gap to over a second over Kyle Smith while Lorenzo Baldassarri fought off Yari Montella and Can Oncu. Montella and Baldassarri swapped back and forth, but Baldassarri held third place. Dominique Aegerter set a fastest lap of 1'41.072 over a second free of Kyle Smith. The raging battle for third was over a second behind Smith on the last lap. Montella tried to pass Baldassarri, sitting next to him for the last few corners, but he lost out on his Kawasaki to Baldassarri's Yamaha.
Dominique Aegerter won by over two seconds, spending what was left of his tyres on the last two laps, ahead of Kyle Smith. Smith's climb from the middle of the pack after he got used to the reduced adhesion earned him a hard-fought second place. Lorenzo Baldassarri held off the Kawasakis of Yari Montella and Can Oncu and the Ducati of Oli Bayliss to take the last step of the podium. Ten starters didn't finish the race.
Dominique Aegerter increased his championship lead by nine points over Lorenzo Baldassarri giving him a lead of forty four points. Nicolo Bulega's DNF allowed Glenn van Straalen to close up to to within nine points of his third place in the championship. Can Oncu remains in fifth place of the championship.
