Johann Zarco ends the session fastest, ahead of Pecco Bagnaia, with a lot of yellow flags at the end of the session. That meant a number of riders could not improve their times, including Marc Marquez, Fabio Quartararo, Jack Miller, Alex Rins, and Franco Morbidelli.
Enea Bastianini and Aleix Espargaro missed out on a spot in provisional Q2. They will be hoping for dry weather on Saturday morning, and a chance to improve.

Newsy bits
Cal highside, hurt his old ankle injury. Not broken, just battered.
Marc GREAT, top non Duc, pushing full bore. Feeling better each Round re strength. Finished Japan strong and smiling!
Quarty says he's overriding to be where he is. Ominous? He and Yamaha are lucky Pecco has had FIVE dnf's.
Danilo Petrucci is very happy! Loves dearly the inline 4 handling. On the rear group pace despite yellow flags and a mistake meaning he didn't complete a time attack. Kid at Christmas, sorting braking later.
Brad has headshake tossing his brake pads out. Had a few moments.
Aprilia struggling for drive grip. Ducati ruling the roost.
Marini criticized for tailing Quartararo for a tow on the FP2 fast lap. Not news, let him be? Oliveira is a surprise in FP2!
Re conditions, early in FP1 riders were going down after touching paint/curbing. They were slippery. It rained alot in the morning. Forecast said wet Saturday.

I think that if the decision to follow FQ (or any other rider) is made by the team or individual rider then fair play, it's hardly anything new - but if there's factory orders to bug a particular rider (which is POSSIBLE given DiGi followed #20 out on the next run) than I think it starts getting a bit insidious. Obviously no other manufacturer has "spare" bikes to throw at such a tactic. Perhaps I'm being paranoid, but something to watch for?
Thought the same thing. Force
Thought the same thing. Force FQ into a LLP or 3 grid position penalty.

World Feed vs BT
I watched FP1 with the BT feed and FP2 with Matt Birt and Simon Crafar commentating. As well as the fact that the BT crew were giving our own Mr Motomatters much love, it was also interesting that the discussion around Aprilia's performance was so different. BT focusing very much on the different tire compound/carcass provided for Buriram (and Austria), world feed talking only about the difference in the bike itself with no mention of the different tire. Whichever it is (likely both) here's hoping Aleix comes through with something special in FP3/Q/Race to keep their championship hopes alive.
