Aprilia's Max Biaggi took the first race win of the 2012 World Superbike season from Philip Island by a margin of just more than seven seconds over BMW's Marco Melandri and Effenbert Liberty Ducati's Sylvain Guintoli.
Biaggi cruised to a comfortable victory after Carlos Checa crashed his Althea Ducati in the final corner after 17 laps. Rain was spitting at the time, which could have led to the highside. Checa was taken to the medical center to be treated for an elbow injury. There's no word on Checa's status for today's second race.
Pole man Tom Sykes came home in a lonely fourth aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10R, followed distantly by Guintoli's Effenbert Liberty Ducati teammate Jakub Smrz.

Checa
only completed 5 laps I think
They don't call him Charlie
They don't call him Charlie 'Chuck it' for no reason
Just because Checa is 40....
...doesn't mean you need to make the same old 40 year old joke.
The champ seemed to chuck it across the finish line six seconds ahead of the race one winner, in the second.
Spolier Alert
Can we not post spoilers in the title please?
Who's the new guy?
Oh dear lord,
there's going to be a riot.
Spoilers in the headlines,
must be 2012.
The end is near.
Spoilers!?!
Wow, can't believe someone thought spoilers in the titles were cool!!! Very disappointing.
Spoilers
Spoilers in the headlines will not be happening again. My instructions to Austin were not clear enough on this point, sorry about that.
Spoilers
I'm sorry to those whose races I ruined with the spoilers in the headlines. That won't be happening again. Thanks for your patience while I find my feet (and remove them from my mouth) here at MotoMatters.
Biaggi..
Biaggi set a new race lap record from like 5 years ago. He was riding great.
