2013 Misano MotoGP FP2 Result: Marquez Part Deux

Repsol's Marc Marquez finished the first day of free practice at the Misano circuit where he started: fastest rider on the track. But Marquez's 1'34.200, set about halfway through the session, was only three-hundredths clear of teammate Dani Pedrosa. Ending the day in third place was Valentino Rossi who appeared to be enjoying both his home circuit and a new seamless gearbox in his M1. Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo finished fourth, a mere four-hundredths slower than Rossi.

But if anything threatened to take attention away from Marquez's raw speed or Yamaha's new tech it was this: Aleix Espargargo finished FP2 in fifth place on the Aprilia CRT bike, not even a full three-tenths of a second slower than Lorenzo's factory Yamaha.

maybe espargaros aprilia got the pneumatic upgrade and not barberas as tweeted? maybe some other upgrades as well?

That time was set when his trap speed was 13-16 KM/H slower then the guys in front of him.

Aleix is doing a smash-up job once again. AE41 will do battle with his brother next season, whatever he rides next year I hope its competitive with the Tech3 M1.

Having read elsewhere about Cal's arm injury it's apparent that this trend to ride no matter how injured you are is out of control. Cal should seriously consider Spies situation, he is out for the season, and do as the Doctors suggest and heal properly. Crutchlow has nothing to lose this season by doing so but everything to lose with his factory ride next season. The chances of re-injury increase when you ride injured, don't be a fool Cal!

I still giggle every time I see the ART machines referred to as CRT bikes - probably just like the army of technicians and race engineers back at the Aprilia factory.

Oh wait, that's right, they're not involved. ART is just a bunch of private blokes bashing away at steel frames with hammers in the back of their pickup trucks ...


Who said a CRT bike has to be build by a few not so good hobbyist? 2 year and people still don't get the class. It's a CRT because, regardless of who built it, Aspar owns it and if Aprilia had put any dark magic into the engine the MSMA team could have a look a it for a few bucks.

You're right. I'm sure Aspar did all that software work on their own, with no help whatsoever from the technicians at Aprilia with years of experience and millions of dollars invested in top-flight roadracing electronics.

The Aspar people didn't do any software development at all, nor engine, nor chassis development. If Aprilia sells the bikes to anybody who can afford them and they don't finance the team then it's a CRT: claiming rule TEAM

I would love to see a bill of sale from Aprilia to Aspar, noting the amount of currency exchanged and the VIN for the specific bike Aspar "bought." If you really think Aspar has actually paid Aprilia anywhere near the cost of designing, building and developing that bike, or the crew that develops it, I've got a bridge for sale. And if Aspar hasn't, then it's an Aprilia-funded factory effort.

Glad that the CRT nonsense is going away.

Next year, we'll have two (or three or more) different rules packages for MotoGP bikes. Jeez.

I swear, I think this is what Dorna should do. Let anyone enter MotoGP with a bike of any spec - displacement, tires, electronics, whatever. Feed those specs into a lap time calculation program and crunch down an anticipated lap time. Then stagger the start of the various machines so they all reach the finish line at the same time.

It makes more sense than saying this manufacturer can have this spec and five engines, this manufacturer can have nine engines but the same fuel capacity and electronics, but only for one season, and this manufacturer can have 12 engines and more fuel but crappier electronics, but only on Tuesdays and only if they promise that they've "sold" a "bike" to someone.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on whether Aspar pays full boat for the brakes and suspension. David did an excellent job in explaining the whole CRT rule package a few years back:

To argue that the Aspar Aprilias are not "machinery developed, managed and supplied by a manufacturer" is an exercise in delusional thinking.

Exactly, the key difference between an ART bike and a M1 or a RC213V is that Aspar, Cardion and PBM own the bike (therefore manage it). I seem to recall PBM said they would use the ART engine on a non-ART chassis on one of their bikes (which I think they didn't).
This is extremely important because if Aprilia decided to stop making ARTs Aspar could keep racing with a FTR Kawasaki or Suter BMW which is precisely why the CRTs were created in the first place, making a MotoGP that could survive to a factory walk-off.

Who cares if Aprilia is back dooring in? I don't. Honda skirted the rules and built a million dollar transmission, Ducati followed suit, now Yamaha, next year Aprilia. Good on Aprilia for working the rules to their benefit. Honda has been doing that for over a decade, the entire 4 stroke era. If Honda can do it so can Aprilia. Good on them. I hope they exploit the 24L next year. I will root for them over all the other factories.

I agree. He should have been noted. This is a track where he has tested the Ducati extensively and so he should be pretty quick anyway. But as the top Ducati, it is impressive. (Although as one person pointed out, being on the fastest Ducati these days is an honor equivalent to being the fast kid at fat camp.) -- mike

So, after reading Aleix comments... he has to end the season as the 2nd best CRT (or worse) in order to bypass his contract commitment to the Aspar Team. That's the only way he could possibly move to the NGM team for 2014!? That's deep. He's a racer that's wants to be on top. He would need to DNF or throw a few races to let Edwards pass him in the standings. Tough call...

If Aleix goes to NGM Forward Racing next year, he will be sure that he will be on third class machinery from Yamaha. Tech3 will have better machines and Lorenzo and Rossi will have better still. Plus at least four Hondas that will be better too, realistically.

On the other hand, when he stays with Aspar, he will get the very best machine Aprilia can build. How good it will be, none of us knows. But potentially it could be the best bike on the grid, or the best bike on some tracks. The NGM bikes are guaranteed to be inferior to at least four other bikes on all tracks.

I would prefer to be uncertain if I would have the best bike instead of being certain I won't.

Espargaro is 40 points ahead of the next CRT and CRTs only make a few point a race, to be the second CRT he would have to throw many, many races. Something everyone around racing would consider unforgivable and no one would ever hire him again.
I think he believes that the production racers next year are going to destroy the CRTs (MotoGP with no Factory option from next year). Comparing him with Bradley Smith I not sure, as a matter of fact as an Aprilia fan I have the wild dream that the Aprilia ART 2014 will beat all of the production racers.

i want both brother riding for Yamaha, smith out both brothers in!!
