Moto2 rookie Maverick Vinales won his first Moto2 race Sunday in only his second try in the series at the COTA. Vinales, the reigning Moto3 champion, started in sixth position and survived a chaotic early race to take the win by four seconds.
Tito Rabat, the pole sitter for the Austin race and the winner at Qatar, finished second after bad start left him back in the pack early in the contest. Dominic Aegerter, who led briefly, held on for third place, seven seconds behind the leader.
Mika Kallio, who briefly challenged Aegerter for third, settled into fourth. The result left him third in the championship points standings, five points behind Vinales and 12 shy of teammate and championship leader Rabat.
Simone Corsi rounded out the top five. Thomas Luthi (6th) won the COTA race last year.
Given his starting position, Vinales was a bit lucky to finish at all. Several crashes in a chaotic first three laps left multiple riders down including Johann Zarco, Julian Simon, Luis Salom and American Josh Herrin. Simon remounted to finish. Herrin was able to remount but crashed a second time.
With 10 laps remaining, Vinales set to work. He consistently posted the race's fastest laps and worked his way through the pack to take the lead with six laps to go. He never looked back, extending his lead every lap until it stood at a massive four seconds by the race's end.

Terol won last year's Moto 2
Terol won last year's Moto 2 race at Cota on a Mapre Suter, not Luthi.
Herrin?
Herrin certainly isn't making any friends this season is he? Two races, two first corner pile ups. Let's hope he can at least find some speed and quit languishing around the back of the pack.
Yikes Josh
Trying to pick up 15 places into turn one was wishful thinking at best.
