Andrea Dovizioso has topped the second session of free practice for the MotoGP class at Motegi. The factory Ducati man took advantage of the extra soft tire the Italian factory is allowed to use to slash half a second off his time and depose Jorge Lorenzo from top spot, bumping the Movistar Yamaha rider into 2nd. Despite his fastest time coming with the softer rubber, Dovizioso was also quick on the soft tire, the harder of the two options have at their disposal, spending much of the day in the top four spots.
Lorenzo ended the day in 2nd, and is clearly heartened by his win last time out at Aragon. The Movistar Yamaha man was quick throughout the session, only losing out to the extra soft tire of Dovizioso at the end. Stefan Bradl picked up the pace at the end of the session to put the LCR Honda up into 3rd, just nipping ahead of Dani Pedrosa on the Repsol Honda. Pedrosa, in turn, held off Valentino Rossi, the Movistar Yamaha man managing his fractured right injured finger fine, and lapping quickly to finish 5th.
Marc Marquez will need to find some extra pace if he has any hopes of wrapping up his second title in a row at Motegi. After a tumble in the morning, when he lost the brakes after a headshake from his Honda RC213V, Marquez could only manage the 6th spot in FP2, eight tenths behind Dovizioso, but a third of a second slower than Jorge Lorenzo. Marquez needs to finish ahead of both Pedrosa and Rossi, but ended the day behind them on Friday. Pol Espargaro led the charge of the two Monster Tech 3 Yamahas, just edging ahead of his teammate into 7th, Bradley Smith forced to settle for 8th. Two Ducatis rounded out the top 10, Andrea Iannone finishing just ahead of Cal Crutchlow. Crutchlow is not yet through to Q2, however, as Yonny Hernandez set a faster time in the morning, and is 10th overall, just ahead of Crutchlow.

Good ride Andrea !
Good to see Andrea and Ducati on top. Yes, thanks (also) to the softer compound but the margin is not tiny in this case !
No brakes???
No brakes after your bike had a headshake?? I think this is very strange, if the brakecalliper pistons move that easy it would surely frighten me.......... but hey,
I'm not anywere near an motorcycle racer ;-)
Casey
i remember this happening to Casey at the turn before the tunnel. He had just come off a tank slapper and sure went to grab a handful of brake and it wasnt there.
You think this is very strange?
Welcome to 1972.
It is strange
Explain it to me please ...... I'm very curious
Actually quite common. When I
Actually quite common. When I saw the replay, I said to myself, his pads got knocked back from the head shake. The announcers didn't pick up on it. Perhaps they never raced...
