Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso grabbed the top spot in the first free practice Friday at the Circuit of the Americas track near Austin, Texas. Dovizioso set the fast time of 2'19.402 on his last lap of practice, just pipping current world champion Marc Marquez in the wet session. Marquez, who led much of FP1 and who has earned pole positions and race wins at both of the races at the new track, finished second at four-tenths back. Scott Redding put his satellite Honda into third, more than a full second off Dovizioso's time.
Rain during all of FP1 meant the times were well off last year's dry session. More importantly, with concerns that conditions might worsen throughout the weekend, riders pushed to establish the wet setup of the bikes as a dry qualifying or race began to seem increasingly unlikely.
The session also marked the second delay of Friday practices at the 5.5 km. (3.4 m) circuit. The start of the Moto3 practice was delayed by insufficient staffing out on the circuit. Then the MotoGP session was red-flagged briefly when a dog ran out on the track. The dog, while nearly as quick as the backmarkers in his first split time, did not set a sufficiently fast lap to continue on to FP2.

Hope it's dry...
Either way---wet or dry---gonna be a good race---keep the K9s off the track!
Very nimble, that dog was!
Yes, David, the GPK-9 was sharp around the corners, but was most decidedly down on straightaway speed, so I'm pretty sure he won't make the 107% rule. So no race for him! :-)
A strange start to the meet for sure, but things will stabilize. With the exception of the weather, of course. But I still anticipate a very interesting weekend ahead!
The rumor is...
... the dog actually beat Josh Herrin's first sector splits from Moto 2 last year.
Dovi...
Doing it on his last lap sends a clear message across the paddock. Well done Dovi!
Insufficient staffing??
Do we need to send Gunnery Sergeant Hartman down there to straighten things out?!
Where in the hell are you from anyway, private?
Cowboy: Sir, Texas, sir!
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Holy dog s**t! Texas? Only steers and q***** come from Texas, Private Cowboy. And you don't look much like a steer to me so that kinda narrows it down.
all volunteers
Make up the track staff. I did it the first year after the local forums put out the all call.
But to my surprise the Track continued with the snobby application process and requirements to be all in or nothing from Thursday on.
Then last minute again say we just need warm bodies to show up in the morning no training just stand at track side when the inspection car comes around.
More a case of mismanagement than anything.
