Marc Marquez took advantage of a drying track to top Friday's order in the second free pactice Friday at Phillip Island. His time, 1'29.383, was nearly a second slower than his pole time from last year as the track's tricky condition kept the speed down a bit. Jorge Lorenzo, who finished the first free pactice at the top of the timesheet, managed second, just five-hundredths behind the leader.
Maverick Vinales put his factory Suzuki in the top three with a lap only a tenth from Marquez. Championship leader Valentino Rossi managed only ninth quickest.

Tires used?
Can anyone confirm that Marquez and Lorenzo both used a new tire at the end of the session, but Rossi did not? Reports hinted that it could be the case, but it wasn't definite one way or the other.

...and...
Maverick Vinales too, the rookie on the Suzuki in third? That's quite amazing actually

Tyre
All eight in front of Rossi went out on a new tyre at the end. Rossi had problems with his tyre in the beginning and had to use his second tyre early on. His racepace was however very simular to Lorenzo but they all complained about a dirty and slippery track so one would expect that the fstest men lower their times by almost 2 seconds come qual ( if it is a dry qual.... something it lokks like it is not going to be :( ) .

Rossi did not use the soft tire on session final...
...but he did use one earlier in the session, to carry on his set-up work. That's what Matteo Flamigni claimed minutes after the end of FP2 to Sky TV Italy. I think we can conclude that his pace is more substantial than his final ranking. We will see.
Rossi and tyres
He seemed to stay out on a longer run, while everyone else - starting with Crutchlow - all went out on fresh rubber for a last minute 'qualification' run.
Rossi seemed more intent on getting race pace

In front of Hayden, P Espargaro, Dovi and Redding not too shabby
Rossi on a good pace as opposed to reports
Dylan Gray was very clear that Rossi went out on his last run on the same used set of tires and minutes later Nick and Matt were saying how Rossi was struggling. Seems like they get a lot wrong even though they must have access to a lot more than what we can see.
They also misreported an onboard of Pedrosa who was up after 3 sectors. It became clear that he ran wide into MG and was annoyed at himself. It wasn't til he came into the pits that lap that they stopped saying he was set to go top......
I see someone here said Rossi used a soft at the beginning, that appears to be true according to his quote after practice. Sounds like he had a problem with the front when he tried the softer rear.
I have a feeling that this is
I have a feeling that this is the weekend where Rossi's dream season comes unraveled.

Stop with the negativity...
The dream is intact.

Could be the weekend, but....
He started cautiously in FP1 and methodically picked up his pace and in FP2 was very fast. Except on the soft rear. That could be a problem for Q, but if he gets that right, he may just get to do what he wants to.
Which I believe is to flat out beat Lorenzo and shut him up to some extent.
