A hot afternoon greeted the intermediate class for their qualifying session, although the action proved to be both calmer and closer than the class that preceded them. There was no dramatic last minute fight, no major incidents and no big surprises at the top.
For the first part of the session it looked like a straight affair between early leader Jonas Folger and the two closest challengers, Johann Zarco and Alex Marquez. With eight minutes left of the session, Sam Lowes crashed the party to snatch pole position from home boy Marquez by a slender margin of five hundredths of a second.
Marquez did have another go at pole but the mission proved impossible, the Spaniard settling for second position. Takaaki Nakagami also looked like challenging the lead but will complete the first row for Sunday’s race.
Folger couldn’t improve on an early fast lap, dropping him back to fourth, just ahead of Zarco, the championship leader also struggling towards the end of the session. They will share second row with Lorenzo Baldassarri, who added another small crash to his portfolio.
Franco Morbidelli will be somewhat disappointed to have qualified seventh after a good showing during practice, to which a one-place grid penalty will be applied for the incident that saw Miguel Oliveira injured and out of the race. That means Thomas Luthi gains a spot, with Axel Pons closing the third line of the grid.
A thirteenth position means that Alex Rins will start the race from the fifth row, with quite a lot to do and hoping to feel better by Sunday afternoon.

Good to see Sam on pole. Glad the past couple of races haven't dented his 'drive'...
Shame about his brother Alex, who won't be racing this weekend after damaging his ankle quite badly.
