Maverick Viñales has ended the first day of the Valencia test as the fastest rider, as most of the factories focus on engines. Viñales and Rossi both tried one step of the 2019 engine, and both were satisfied with progress made, Viñales finishing fastest and Rossi third.
Marc Marquez ended the day in second, also working on a new engine and bike which he had also tried at Aragon, and like the Movistar Yamaha riders, has another step to test on Wednesday. Andrea Dovizioso finished as fourth fastest, using the shortened track time to set up the 2018 bike ready to make back-to-back comparisons with the 2019 bike ready for tomorrow.
Franco Morbidelli was the fastest of the bike switchers, ending the day in sixth, two thirds of a second behind Viñales, and under four tenths behind Rossi, the Italian adapting to the Petronas Yamaha M1 very rapidly. Morbidelli has the 2018 machine at his disposal. Pecco Bagnaia was fastest rookie on the Pramac Ducati, under a second behind Viñales.
The riders did not have a great deal of track time on Tuesday. The track started damp and didn't really dry out until noon, with everyone taking to the track some time before 1pm. The rain came around 3:30pm, putting a premature end to practice. Wednesday is likely to be dry all day, so the teams will be hoping to get out early for the final day of testing before heading to Jerez.
