Not quite the Titanic spin-off predicted 24 hours ago but although the lightweight class escaped another downpour, they could not dodge the cold and the wind. A few riders took to the track all wrapped up and resigned to the idea that the Q2 ship has sailed but keen to work towards the race, while some were in no hurry to aggravate injuries or risk new ones in the challenging conditions.
Tony Arbolino proved once again his prowess for tricky conditions but it did little to help his cause for qualifying. The Italian still gave it a good go, posting red sector after red sector and leading the session throughout. Filip Salac grabbed the mantle for top rookie in FP3, two tenths of a second off the lead and less than a tenth ahead of Ayumu Sasaki. Romano Fenati also braved the conditions to go fourth and the final rider within half a second of his teammate’s lead.
Dennis Foggia rounded out the top five, very closely followed by Vietti, Raul Fernandez and Can Oncu. Estrella Galicia duo of Alonso Lopez and Sergio Garcia completed the top ten, one second slower than Arbolino. In the end, Gabriel Rodrigo was the only rider not to leave the comfort of pitlane to try to set a time.
With lap times nowhere near Friday benchmarks, Aron Canet stayed at the top of the overall pile, as the fastest man of the weekend and favourite ahead of qualifying. The Spaniard will be joined in Q2 by main rival Dalla Porta, as well as Albert Arenas, Niccolo Antonelli, Tatsuki Suzuki, Andrea Migno, John McPhee, Fenati, Foggia, Rodrigo, Stefano Nepa, Vietti, Kaito Toba and Marcos Ramirez. Darryn Binder and Arbolino are due to headline Q1 alongside Fernandez, Jakub Kornfeil or Garcia.
