Testing is underway again for the second part of the MotoGP test at Qatar. With conditions much better than during the shakedown test over the weekend, more riders are off and up to speed early.
Two hours into the test, the Espargaro brothers lead the way, Aleix on the Aprilia just eking ahead of Pol on the Honda. Suzuki's Joan Mir is currently third, while Valentino Rossi is currently fastest Yamaha, ahead of Alex Rins.
Yamaha are celebrating their 60th anniversary in racing with a special livery for test rider Cal Crutchlow, a throwback to their original red and white colors with a speedblock design. No doubt this livery will make a reappearance at a race later in the season, should Crutchlow race as a wildcard.

Great colours!
The current factory Yamaha colours are (again) the most dull and miserable of the entire grid. Those vintage colours make the Yamaha look so much better! Why don't they take an example from Suzuki last (and this) year, who in their 100th anniversay year made a great modern interpretation of their factory colours from the 1960's...? That would be so much more fitting!
And can we please have the professional looking and perfectly readable yellow number plates back?! With number plates on the side as well! The modern undecipherable rider numbers are an insult to the spectators and look messy as hell too.
Beautiful
Powervalve, you're right on all counts. The numbers would be a problem, sadly, with current sponsorship grabbing the lion's share of the bodywork.
Regarding sponsors
Unfortunately I think you are right in that sponsors would not allow the space, but I actually think that it would benefit sponsors too when their precious riders can be easily identified on track during races. Especially when they are standing out in recognisability in a whole group of riders with numbers you can hardly find, let alone read while they blast past.
Anyway, even within the room they use now for the 'creative' numbers, it would be very simple to make them easier to read. Better contrasting colours, no sticking together of numbers, no drawings in them, leave a bit of free space around them, etcetera. Or even better: having a uniform colour for all plates, like it used to be, would make it so much easier for your brain to lock on to and read it. I really think it would benefit everybody, from spectators to sponsors. And it would make the grid look more professional too, having official, uniform MotoGP number plates. Riders could still do something artistic on their helmets or leathers of course.
With you
I'm with you on all of that. This is a proper race bike paint job. I shouldn't be surprised if they used that 1970's 'go faster' pinstripe tape here or there.
Look at Cal!
He knows we're all wishing WE could ride that gorgeous motorcycle!
Dani
Pedrosa fastest KTM...Nice
Beautiful 35
Such a rush to see the speed blocks again. LOVE IT! Please, Yammy, lose the black asap and get back to where you once belonged.
We're almost there. Gonna be a great season! WooHOOO
