2012 World Superbike Test Dates Announced - Testing Added To Australian, Spanish, Italian And Russian WSBK Rounds

Infront Motor Sports, organizers of the World Superbike series, have announced the official test dates for the 2012 WSBK season. As part of the cost-cutting initiatives which are now a ubiquitous part of motorcycle racing, testing for the WSBK series has been linked to races, rather than at separate tests, with the aim of reducing travel and transport expenses.

The first test is the traditional pre-season test at Phillip Island, taking place on the Monday and Tuesday before the 2012 season season opener at the Australian circuit. The following test is at Imola, on the Monday after the race at the legendary Italian track at the beginning of April. The Spanish WSBK round at the Motorland Aragon circuit in July also features a test on the Monday after the race, while the teams will get a one-day test - in effect, an extra day of practice - ahead of the inaugural Russian round of World Superbikes at the Moscow Raceway being built just outside the Russian capital.

Below is the press release from Infront announcing the test dates:

SBK official 2012 tests dates announced

Rome (Italy), November 28, 2011: With the new winter testing ban about to come into force (only for Superbike teams) on the first day of December and running until January 15th, the official testing dates for Superbike and Supersport teams for the 2012 season have now been announced.

Once again a two-day pre-race test session will take place shortly before round one at Phillip Island in February, this time on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st. Race day is Sunday 26th February.

In a new initiative to help save the participating teams some budget, yet continue machine and Pirelli tyre development, there will be two post-race tests. The first will be on 2nd April, which is the Monday after the Imola SBK round. The second test takes place in summer, at MotorLand Aragon on July 2nd, also on the Monday immediately after race day.

Given that the Moscow Raceway round will provide an all-new venue for the riders and teams to face in 2012, there will be an official SBK test there on Wednesday 22nd August, two days before practice starts. Raceday itself is on Sunday August 26th.

By doing these tests the teams will not have to spend any significant extra money on the logistics, but merely add a few days to their overall travel plans for races that their team will be attending in any case.

2012 Test Dates:

Phillip Island   Monday 20/Tuesday 21 February   (pre-race)
Imola   Monday 2nd April   (post-race)
Motorland Aragon   Monday 2nd July   (post-race)
Moscow Raceway   Wednesday 22nd August   (pre-race)

Pre-Race testing at Moscow sort of spoils the new track on the calender aspect of the first event. No data no direct experience yada yada.

As for Philip Island they usually run a track day after the event (or maybe it's only after MotoGP) to take advantage of the rubber layed down and out of state riders, I'm not sure if that has anything to with the pre-race test.
