While the MotoGP line up for next season is largely settled, there is still plenty of activity in the Moto2 and Moto3 markets. This week saw two major announcements for the 2013: in Moto2, the Tech 3 team announced the signing of Frenchman Louis Rossi, currently riding for Team Germany in Moto3; and in Moto3, the Mapfre Aspar team announced that Jonas Folger will continue with the squad for next season.
Rossi has impressed many teams this season, performing strongly in Moto3 despite a height and weight disadvantage, and winning his home Grand Prix at Le Mans. Rossi should suit the bigger physical size of a Moto2 bike, and being signed with a French team should give him a solid basis to start his Moto2 career from.
Folger is to continue with the Mapfre Aspar team, having made an extraordinarily successful switch halfway through the season. Folger had started the year on the uncompetitive Ioda bike, but split with the team after Mugello, having only scored points in the rain-hit race in Le Mans. His switch to the Aspar team was an immediate success, the young German getting on the podium in his first race and winning the next. The switch has proved to be a boon to the team as well, Aspar having struggled at first with Alberto Moncayo and Hector Faubel, Folger having outscored both men in his first four races with the squad than Moncayo or Faubel secured in the first 10.
More announcements are expected in the coming weeks. Danny Kent is widely expected to move up from Moto3 to join Rossi in the Tech 3 Moto2 squad, while at Marc VDS, the current duo of Scott Redding and Mika Kallio are almost certain to return now that Johann Zarco has torn up the contract he had previously signed with the team.
The Tech 3 Racing Team is delighted to announce it has reached an agreement to sign highly rated French rider Louis Rossi for its Moto2 World Championship assault in 2013.
The 23-year-old gained vital World Championship experience in the 125cc category in 2010 and 2011 and he has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the exciting and ultra competitive new Moto3 four-stroke class this year.
He scored a fantastic debut Grand Prix victory in his home race at Le Mans back in May and he has qualified on the front row tw ice in 2012. He has also scored four other top ten finishes and is currently firmly in contention to claim a top six position in the final Moto3 World Championship standings.
The signing of Rossi reaffirms Tech 3 boss Herve Poncharal's commitment to showcasing French talent on the world stage, having previously worked with Olivier Jacque and Sylvain Guintoli in MotoGP and most recently Mike di Meglio in the Moto2 class in 2011.
Herve Poncharal – Team Manager:
“I am delighted that Louis has decided to commit his future to Tech 3 Racing Moto2 Team. I have monitored him very closely and he is a rider with great potential who I am really looking forward to help take the next step in his career. I am confident the combination of Louis and the Tech 3 Racing's Mistral 610 project will be a formidable one in 2013.”
Fruitful early relationship between both parties leads to an agreement for a Moto3 title challenge in 2013
After a hugely successful start to their working relationship the MAPFRE Aspar Team and Jonas Folger have reached an agreement to continue together in the Moto3 class in 2013. Since lining up with the team at the Indianapolis Grand Prix the German has picked up three podiums - including a victory - in just four races.
It means that despite finishing in the points on just five occasions this season the MAPFRE Aspar Team rider lies tenth in the current championship on 72 points - a clear sign of his faultless adaptation to the Kalex/KTM package and the Spanish team. Such results make Folger the logical choice to spearhead the team's next assault on the minor category title that they already won in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011.
Jorge Martínez 'Aspar': "I am delighted to be able to confirm the signature of Jonas Folger for 2013. Ever since he rode the bike for the first time at Indianapolis he has shown a high level of performance and been constantly amongst the leading positions. He finished on the podium in his first Grand Prix with us and in just four races he has three podiums including a victory. I think it is great that we will be together again in Moto3 for the whole of next season. The MAPFRE Aspar Team has complete faith in the Kalex/KTM package and of course in Jonas Folger. We hope that in 2013 this combination can take us back to where we belong, which is fighting for the Moto3 title."
Jonas Folger: "I am really happy that I am staying with the MAPFRE Aspar Team for another season and I think Jorge is too. We made a connection from the first minute we started working together and thanks to this the results started coming instantly. The work we have done so far gives us great belief going into each round at the moment and it promises to be a bright future together. We have been able to pick up results from the start so I hope this form continues to the end of the current season. I want to keep going like this and be on the podium at of the remaining races. My objective for next season is to start as strongly as possible and fight for the title from the start. The fact I have decided to stay with the MAPFRE Aspar Team is because I know they will give me the means to do just that."
