2014 World Superbike And World Supersport Provisional Calendar Released - With Many Question Marks

At long last, the FIM and Dorna have released a calendar for the World Superbike and World Supersport classes for 2014. The calendar features fourteen World Superbike events, but it is still very much a provisional list, with three of the fourteen still subject to contract, and the final race still marked as to be confirmed, with neither the location nor the country known.

The season kicks off as always in Australia, the World Superbike and World Supersport classes headed to the Phillip Island circuit for the opener on 23rd of February. There follows another WSBK tradition: the interminable wait for round 2. In 2014, there are seven weeks between the first and second rounds, with the second event taking place at the Motorland Aragon circuit just outside of Alcañiz. The WSBK circus then takes off for a tour through Europe, heading to Assen, Imola and Donington Park, before heading overseas again to Sepang, and a Malaysian round. Two rounds in Europ follow, at Misano and Portimao, before the World Superbike class heads to Laguna Seca, taking the slot vacated by the MotoGP class. 

Another eight week layoff follows, WSBK only reconvening again at Jerez in early September, before heading east to Russia, then back to France and Magny Cours. The season then winds up overseas, with a return to South Africa - to Welkom, this time, rather than Kyalami - before the final 'mystery' round on 2nd November, taking place overseas. That final round could possibly be another attempt to race in India, at the Buddh Internation Circuit outside Delhi, or it could be a return to South America, at either the Argentinian or Brazilian circuit.

Two names are missing from the 2014 World Superbike calendar. That World Superbikes would not be returning to Silverstone had already been announced, but confirmation has also come that Monza has been dropped from the calendar over safety concerns. Despite both its legendary status in World Superbike history, the circuit is no longer able to provide the safety required by the performance of modern superbikes. Safety is manageable in the dry, but as recent years demonstrated, the track is not safe enough in the wet.

Dissappointed that they won't be racing at Donny. Very entertaining class.

Also sorry that Silverstone was dropped but given the attendances over the last couple of years, not surprised.

The track is not safe enough in the wet? I thought it was the Pirelli rain tyres that are not safe enough at high speeds.

I'm not sure it's fair to call the track unsafe, rather than the Pirelli tires not being able to manage the speeds in the wet ? Are we both missing something ?

I've followed WSB since it started. In only in papers the first few years because that's all we got. Then I was able to RENT season review video tapes here on the US. Once we got tape delay that was only a few weeks old in the late 90s there was no turning back.

Speed Vision was AWESOME! We lost that to SpeedTV and now nothing. So in 2013 I saw one WSB race and more important, I did not attend Laguna Seca when I had the chance. That's three ticket sales missed out on. I just hadn't seen enough for the price gouging of Monterey's hotels, gas & local police to make sense.

I can see kids "twerking" for free on YouTube. I am willing to pay a lot based on the MGP site I'be been paying for yrs. Please, take my money.

I agree with all of what NW said. I gladly pay for the motgp gp service. I would do the same for WSBK. The infrastructure hopefully is mostly in place...

After having seen that the India round of WSBK in 2013 being cancelled and also seeing the Formula1 round of 2014 cancelled, I have no hope in hell that Superbike racing or any other form motor racing will ever happen in India. The Buddh owners are probably hoping that the forth coming General Elections (around May, 2014) may bring a change in the party forming the government in India. The present problem is that India refuses to treat motor racing as a sport because it is something that the rich do (but funnilly enough it treats billiards, golf and tennis as sports despite these also being the playgrounds of the rich) and that is pushing the costs of the races up. The intangible in this line of thinking is can FIM and Dorna wait till the middle of the year to see if there is any change of government and then what of the possibility of the some government coming back to power?

I am extremely sceptical about any racing ever happening here with the population still containing a substantial number of people who carry the dogmas of a very convoluted and misinterpreted notion of socialism in their head. What is laughable about these people is that they work in what they term the "development sector" while in real life they instigate and litigate cases in law courts and these cases pertain to activities that do bring development. I am very sure that we have seen the last F1 race and also the last international motor race in India when the F1 Indian Grand Prix of 2013 was done and dusted.
