Paddock Pass Podcast Episode 159: Another Wild Weekend In Styria, Austria

Another MotoGP round at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, another bunch of incident-packed races, and another Paddock Pass Podcast to chew it all over. In this edition Neil Morrison and David Emmett try to make sense of everything that happened on the second successive week in Spielberg.

There was plenty to talk about. Neil and David go over another thrilling finish, the race decided in the final corner as it so often is at the Red Bull Ring. We talk about KTM's success, with Miguel Oliveira getting their second MotoGP win in three weekends, the first for Portugal, and the first for the Tech3 team. We discuss Pol Espargaro vs Jack Miller, whether the Suzuki is the best bike on the grid, and how Joan Mir was foiled by a restart.

Naturally, we take a deep dive into the issues with Yamaha, why Maverick Viñales had such a massive smash at Turn 1, and the braking prroblems all of the Yamahas were suffering. We ponder whether Yamaha's woes are permanent or just tied to the Red Bull Ring, and how they will fare at Misano. We take a look at the track limits penalties, and try to make sense of why Jorge Martin was given a penalty, Marco Bezzecchi wasn't, and nor was Pol Espargaro. We wonder about Marc Marquez and his injury, and what that means going forward. And then we finish off with our winners and losers.

Thanks. What's also interesting is what's not talked about. No mention of Ducati? Five wins on the trot and eight podiums in five races at Austria until last Sunday (which was the first time a Ducati rider did not grace the top step of the podium). What about Ducati Deflategate - or Dovizioso's team's colossal blunder of not accounting for the ambient temperature when setting the rear tire pressure? I'm just curious of your take on what's happening in the Red box. Of course, it could simply be the uncertainty of motogp life throwing another knuckleball. But, is there any history in Grand Prix of a team "conditioning" a rider's race? Not trying to spread rumors. Only asking questions.

With a much closer grid and more battles/crowds (hooray!), V4's are in favor. The Yamaha wants to get Jorge'd up front for clear track to carve rails in. We cannot overrepresent how much of a disaster this Yamaha is. 

Honda and Yamaha were not joined at the front. They are beaten. The Suzuki, beautiful underdog, has motor enough to stay in the draft of the three V4's in most instances. It has NO weakness. It handles like a dream, doing so conventionally. Rins is a VERY strong rider, on a steady determined and focused rise. In a convivial "family style" program. Mir has arrived, not a one off. How perfectly Suzuki is it that Mir had a win in hand that Yamahack threw out? Little poor orphan Suzuki just can't have a great thing, can they? This is their normal, unfortunately. 

The KTM is the best Honda. This is a fantastic story in every way. One of THREE riders of theirs, if not two of them, could step out to the front of this championship. Really! Great bike. 

I picked bikes for both Winner and Loser this go around. The KTM and the Yamaha. Mir wasn't the big loser Neil, he was 4th and is on a roll. In agreement re FabQ and Maverick with Dave, but have to call it as The Yamaha.
