Paddock Pass Podcast Episode 226: Styria MotoGP - Crashes, Red Flags, Rookie Winners, And The Maverick Mystery

The Paddock Pass Podcast crew look back at an eventful and important first MotoGP race after the summer break. We kick off the show with David Emmett teaching Adam Wheeler the correct pronunciation of the German for Austria, while Neil Morrison comments on David's dress sense. After a quick recap of where MotoGP stands after the race, we talk about the unpredictability of the weather in Austria, and how it ended up playing into Fabio Quartararo's hands. We discuss our love/hate relationship with the Red Bull Ring, and ask whether the crash which caused the race to be red flagged was a result of the track layout or could have happened anywhere.

We disuss KTM's ups and downs, based in no small part on Michelin's tire allocation, with the fronts being too soft for the RC16 to use properly. We talk about Brad Binder's incredible comeback, and Dani Pedrosa's deeply impressive wildcard appearance, showing real speed despite not having raced in nearly three years. We discuss Suzuki's holeshot device, and how Joan Mir used it to his advantage. And naturally, we talk about Jorge Martin's incredible victory, where it came from and what it means for the future.

We also discuss the empty seats in MotoGP, and who could end up filling the two Petronas seats and the second VR46 Ducati. We finish up with predictions for the coming weekend at the Red Bull Ring, and who we expect to come out on top.

We did not discuss Valentino Rossi's retirement, having covered it at length on a freely-available show on Patreon on Thursday evening, after the Italian announced he would end his racing career at the end of this season.

No mention of Olivera's front tire woes being due to having to ride sub-optimally because of his wrist injury. Injuries causing a change in ride style resulting in tire woes is well documented.

... the follow up podcast now that Vinales has been suspended from racing his M1 for apparently trying to sabotage it after the red flag. Bizarre.

Adam's comments on Pol's Honda slot and Marc being peerless... he used to be peerless but not anymore and there are still major doubts over his recovery... well in my mind at least and yeah he's riding with half an arm... but that is not the other riders' fault... I doubt Marc will ever return to his utter dominance that brought him 8 world titles.. but I do hope that he wins many more titles and that at least we have someone else winning a title every now and then... He is still the best rider to ever swing his leg over a MotoGP machine...
