Márquez shines and wins in Germany

The Repsol rider secures his fourth victory of the season, his third consecutive win, and keeps reducing the distance to the Championship leader

After setting the pole position yesterday, the Repsol rider reinforced today his dominion of the weekend by taking his fourth win in his debut season in Moto2. Marc Márquez finished in first position after outperforming the Championship leader, Stefan Bradl.

Following his battle with Bradl during most of the race, Emilio Alzamora's pupil decided to increase his margin two laps before the end of the race. Márquez pushed to the max and set a pace impossible to follow

Team satisfied, Salom not

In anger and frustrated Luis Salom came back into the pit of RW Racing GP after the 125cc race of the German Grand Prix. The Spanish rider was not at all satisfied with his fifth place. He was furious with the German wildcard rider Forstenhaeusler, who in the last round made room for Nico Terol, but not for Salom. ,,Just while I was getting into position to pass Terol for fourth place.''

Salom would calm down soon, team owner Roelof Waninge knew. ,,And then he will understand that it was awfully good what he showed at the Sachsenring.'' Waninge was satisfied with fifth place and the overall performance of his rider. ,,Luis has picked up valuable points and did good business concerning his position in the World Championship. He had ridden wisely and without damage. Of course it would have been great when Luis had made it to the podium. But when that's just not within reach, it is better to be fifth safely than to be irresponsible and take risks. He's done good. I am not only satisfied but also proud of him.''

Salom could not take full advantage of his front row position at the start, but he managed to get in the front group quickly. Until halfway through the race Salom could participate fully in the group of six to eight riders fighting for the podium. In the fourth and fifth lap the Spaniard made a brilliant move in turn 12 to pass several riders at once to gain second position. Unfortunately the battle at the front was too severe and Saloms machine was just not fast enough to stay with the leading group that gradually decimated to three men. After a photo finish in a dead heat for Hector Faubel and Johann Zarco, Faubel was declared the winner based on a faster lap.

,,I had my mind set on the podium,'' Salom explained his frustration. ,,When I was losing the connection with the leaders and found myself back on eighth or ninth, I put everything at stake in order to get back. I managed, but I might have asked too much of myself and the machine to actually be part of the race. When subsequently Terol and Gadea fell back, I could not pass them. It seemed just in the last lap I could take Terol, when this wildcard riders got in my way and cost me fourth.''

With the good results Salom has made in the last few races (fourth at Silverstone, second at Assen, sixth in Mugello and fifth at the Sachsenring) the confidence for the second part of the season is there. The next race for RW Racing GP will be August (Brno, Czech Republic). In Laguna Seca (July 24) only the MotoGP class will come to action.

Dunlop takes 125th consecutive 125 victory

Dunlop today celebrates the 125th consecutive victory in the 125 World Championship after Hector Faubel took a dramatic victory by fastest race lap ruling after a photo finish tie with Johann Zarco in the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring.

Despite the regulations allowing for open tyre competition, Dunlop has won every 125cc race since Casey Stoner won the Grand Prix of Valencia on 2nd November 2003.

"This is a fantastic milestone for us, particularly in the final season of 125 which has been the school for so many great world champions over the years since its start in 1949," says Alan Nicholls, Dunlop Motorsport Senior Service Engineer, 125 World Championship.

"Dunlop has supplied 125 tyres since the very early days. We have faced fierce tyre competition over the years before competitors opted to run with our tyres despite there being no regulation to compel them to do so and our continued success is a ringing endorsement of our product."

Previous Dunlop milestones achieved in the category include Faubel winning the 2007 Qatar Grand Prix for 50 Dunlop victories in a row and Nicolas Terol winning that same event in 2010 to take Dunlop's consecutive win tally to 100.

"As we saw today, it was dramatic, close racing all the way and we have seen that in so many races in this tremendous category. For 125th consecutive win to be achieved by such a close margin is a quite some achievement!"

Since the 2003 Valencia victory, riders of eleven different nationalities have taken wins on Dunlop tyres, including subsequent MotoGP world champions Casey Stoner and Jorge Lozeno. For 2012, the Moto3 World Championship comes into force with Dunlop as the official tyre.

Eight rounds remain of the 125cc world championship which is due to reach its culmination at the in Grand Prix of Valencia on November 6th.

Unlucky German Grand Prix race for Xavier Siméon

Starting out of 7th position the Eni Grand Prix of Germany went off well for Xavier Siméon. Unfortunately the luck only stayed until first corner of the first lap when Julian Simón was taken out by another rider and took Siméon with him into the gravel.

The 21 years old tried to fight back the positions he lost due to the incident, but had to complain about strong chattering issues which prevented him from getting a constant rhythm until lap six.

Coming back from second last position after the incident in lap one Siméon fought his way through to finish the race in 18th position.

Siméon hopes to come back stronger after the summer break to get more points for his championship standings.

Xavier Siméon – 18th, 42'07.594:

"I was next to Simón and I could see that he was hit by anot her rider and then he rode into me and I went out on the gravel with him. I lost a lot of time and then I was with Bradley (Smith). When I came back on the track I tried to find my rhythm again and I don't know why but after my excursion into the gravel I experienced a lot of chattering in the slow parts of the track for the rest of the race. We didn't have any of these problems during this weekend until then and we need to check the bike to find out what happened. I could not push very hard at the beginning to reach the group in front of me. After six or seven laps I found a constant rhythm again and could catch the other riders. But I am really disappointed, we could have done a Top 10 today, but that's racing I guess. We were just unlucky today."

Hervé Poncharal, Team Manager:

"I am really sorry for Xavier as he did a really good weekend. And it had nothing to do with him, unfortunately Simón crashed in the first corner of the first lap and took him out in the gravel and that was it. For sure if you go out on the gravel after a start out of third row and after such a good qualifying yesterday, the motivation is not as big as if you could hold your position in the first lap. I am very sorry for Xavier, but that is racing. I want to tell him that he did a really good job this weekend and I hope he will come back to Brno as strong as we saw him here this weekend at Sachsenring and for sure things like today will not happen every single race."


The ninth event of the 2011 Moto2 championship has finished, after today's race at the circuit of Sachsenring.

As prearranged, Iannone and his crew chose the final set-up of the Suter MMXI machine in the warm up of this morning, setting the tenth best lap time of the session.

Starting from the twenty-fifth spot on the grid, in the race Andrea move up and overtook many rivals, lap after lap, and completed a series of very interesting laptimes. The rider from Vasto, on the twenty-fourth lap, managed to go up to the twelfth position, but he had to deal once again with the extra wear out of the tyres because of his comeback, so that in the end he crossed the finishing line with the fourteenth spot.

In the championship standings, Andrea still holds the seventh position, with a total of 66 points.

Andrea Iannone, #29 — race: 14th

"I really cannot say I'm happy with this result, this was a complicated weekend. The practice sessions didn't quite work out as we wanted, and this is a track where last season we proved to be very fast and competitive. Now there is a break of three weeks and we are going to work to solve this situation, that's all we are aiming at. We'll choose what to do to be back in the top spots. We want to turn around this season and I'm sure we'll make it, we are not going to give in anyway. I'd like to thank my team, Suter, the technicians and all the people that are helping us at the moment."

More points for Mahindra in German GP

Sachsenring - 17 July, 2011: The Indian-owned Mahindra team added to its growing tally of World Championship points in a difficult German GP, with both riders overcoming problems to get to the finish of the first race of the day at the challenging 3.671-km Sachsenring circuit.

The one to score was Danny Webb (20). The English rider was forced to dig deep, when pain from the shoulder he fractured two weeks ago in Italy gave him increasingly severe difficulties as the 27 laps wore on. He finished 14th, gaining two points for his pains.

Team-mate Marcel Schrötter (18, from Germany) finished a frustrating 16th, one place out of the points, after a bad start put him near the back, and a lack of engine revs meant it took all his efforts to climb back towards the front. He had qualified 13th, but finished the first lap 27th after getting off the line badly.

The Mahindra is the only machine on the 36-strong grid with both engine and chassis built by the team.

The 125 class now has a break of four weekends, with only the premier MotoGP class attending next week's US GP. For the riders, it will be a welcome break: for the Italy-based Engines Engineering, a chance to do further development to their exclusive disc-valve engine.

The next race is at Brno in the Czech Republic on August 14.

DANNY WEBB – 14th Position

"I got lucky, gaining places on the last lap when two guys crashed ahead of me – but it's the first time I've had that luck all year. It was a tough race. Halfway through, my shoulder starting hurting badly. That meant I was putting more pressure on my left leg to compensate, and a muscle in my thigh pumped up and I had bad cramp. I struggled to carry on, not wanting to push too hard and maybe crash again and injure my shoulder worse. Now I'm here, in the points, and the results are in black and white. I'll take it."

MARCEL SCHRÖTTER – 16th Position

"I got a really bad start, but that was not the real problem. I had quite a good feeling with the bike, and I was able to move forward ... but I could have gone faster. For some reason the engine wouldn't rev past 11,000 – it should be 12,500 rpm or more. It meant I lost a lot of power, and it was really difficult to pass anybody. Looking at the top ten times, I am sure I could have been there."

Podium streak ends for Smith in Germany

Bradley Smith's quest to score a fourth consecutive Moto2 podium for the Tech 3 Racing Team ended in disappointment at the Sachsenring circuit in Germany earlier today.

Confident of extending his fantastic run of form that saw him claim podium finishes in Silverstone, Assen and Mugello, Smith's challenge for the rostrum was ended just seconds into the 29-lap race when a small mistake in the braking zone for the tight first corner left him no option but to run into the gravel trap.

Relegated down the rankings to 33rd, the British rider then showed his true potential on the impressive Mistral 610 machine to mount a thrilling recovery in front of a capacity crowd at the Sachsenring circuit.

The tight and twisty nature of the 2.281 miles circuit makes overtaking difficult, but Smith used all his race craft to fight his way back into 17th position. A valuable points-scoring finish seemed a certainty as he was poised to break into the top 15 when he lost the front-end at Turn 3 on lap 16. Smith was forced to retire having failed to get his engine running again, ending his proud record of finishing in every race so far this season.

Mike di Meglio also demonstrated his fighting qualities in a race run in temperatures that reached 23 degrees, despite heavy cloud cover.

The French rider superbly fought his way into contention for the points but had to settle for 16th position having just failed to get the better of Claudio Corti on the final lap.

Bradley Smith DNF – 79 points:

"First of all I have to say sorry to the Tech 3 Racing Team. They worked very hard this weekend and they gave me a great machine to do the business on. But I made a slight mistake going into the first corner. I downshifted too many gears and I couldn't get the bike stopped and that was a big mistake on my part. I had a really good pace and felt really confident coming back through the field. My times were in the 1.25s and that was faster than Marquez and Bradl but then I made another silly mistake at Turn 3 and could not get the bike going again. It is a frustrating to go like this into the summer break, but it means that in four weeks I will be highly motivated to return stronger in Brno. I know what we can achieve and what we are capable of and I've no doubt that we can have a great second half of the season."

Mike di Meglio 16th – 7 points:

"I wan ted to get some points and on the last lap I tried to attack Corti but I was very close to crashing. I lost some time because of that and it was very difficult to come back and catch him back up for another attempt. The weekend was a lot of hard work. We changed a lot on the bike and gained a lot of experience with different settings that will help for the rest of the season. I'm looking forward to the summer break now and returning fully motivated for the final part of the Championship."

Herve Poncharal – Team Manager:

"We can't hide from the fact that today we are disappointed, but we have to accept that is racing. You can't win a race in the first corner, but you can lose a race in the first corner and unfortunately that's what happened to Bradley. He was really confident that he could pick up some places at the first corner but this time it didn't go to plan. The r ace was not over, but damaged because of that first small mistake. He was the quickest guy on the track for many laps after that. And when you see that the tenth position finished ten seconds behind, we know he would have easily been in the top ten. But then he had the crash and that was a pity because his recovery was a good show for the fans. We would have liked to go into the summer break with a sweeter taste in the mouth. Bradley learned another lesson today but he shouldn't be too down because the last few races he has been phenomenal and today he could have fought at the front again, so we know he has the speed to compete with the best. Mike had a decent race. He was only just outside the points, but there is a lot of work to do and he needs to have more confidence in himself. Clearly the gap between him and Bradley is too big. I really hope he can come back with fresh motivation from Brno onwards."


Teammate Nico Terol uses skill and prudence to claim fourth place, suffering from pain in his right hand

The 125cc race at the Sachsenring was one of the closest in history, and kept fans guessing as to the victor right up to the chequered flag -and beyond. A weekend of close times had indicated that it was going to be a tight race, and five riders had their turn at the front (Faubel, Terol, Vázquez, Gadea and Viñales). In the end it came down to three, then two riders, in the battle for the win. Viñales was left behind by Faubel and Zarco on the penultimate lap, and Faubel led the way. Zarco pulled level with him on the line and the two were inseparable. Faubel was awarded victory by Race Direction by virtue of having clocked the fastest lap of the two riders, after a video finish proved inconclusive.

One has to go back to the last race of 2007, at Valencia, to find Faubel's last victory. The BANKIA Aspar rider was back to winning ways in Germany, and was able to command the pace at the front. His fastest lap of 1.27.867 gained further important when he finished the race level with Zarco, as it was this time that handed him the win.

Nico Terol was off the podium, but also had a tremendous race. Taking into account the pain that he was suffering in his recently injured right hand, the Spaniard did well to keep up with his rivals in the early going and showed intelligence in settling for fourth later on.

Adrián Martín's run of bad luck continued in Germany. At Mugello he went down on the opening lap, but this time his crash came right at the end of the race. He was taken out by another rider on the final corner of the last lap.

1st Héctor Faubel: "This weekend was tremendously competitive. When I saw on the big screen that Zarco had beaten me, I couldn't believe it. It seemed unfair that the win would go his way. Fortunately, justice was done. Race Direction awarded me the win by virtue of having the fastest lap, which is the first time I remember this happening. I am happy with this result, because it is magnificent for myself and the team. Let's hope that things flow a bit more freely after this race. I found out that I had won when in parc ferme, and it was a fabulous moment. I think that this is going to be a big boost in motivation for the rest of the season, because we needed a result like this one. It is odd that I have opened my winning account at one of the tracks that I like the least. The team had given me a very effective chassis, and thanks to this I was able to ride so comfortably. This shows that when the team and the bike are on form, we are very competitive."

4th Nico Terol: "I know that I was going to suffer a little today, because my hand had been bothering me all weekend. The lead group was very tightly packed, and you could see that we were all really up for it. I took things easy at the start, as I wanted to warm up my hand, and when I got to the front was when I made a push to try and gain breathing space. However, it wasn't to be. I knew that my hand would not be at 100% by the end of the race. I had a lot less pain than I expected, but by the middle of the race it was affecting me a lot under braking and when I turned the bike. I think that fourth place is a great result, especially with Héctor winning. I want to congratulate him, because he is a good friend and needed a result like this. After this race and with the advantage gained over the first half of the season, I am going to take a break with calmness and satisfaction."

Adrián Martín (DNF): "I tried to forget about the pain on the opening lap, as I wanted to keep up with the group ahead. As the race went on, I noticed that the bike was moving about a lot, and I didn't have the hand strength to grab the handlebars. I got more tired with every lap, and I was really suffering, but I tried all I could to stay in the points. When the race was almost over, I got taken out by another rider. It was a mistake, and can happen to anyone. I feel bad about coming so close to finishing a race. We now have time to try and recover for the next race in the Czech Republic."

Third consecutive victory for Márquez

The Repsol rider adds a new triumph in Moto2 and reduces in five more points Stefan Bradl's margin in the overall standings

After his victories in Holland and Italy and following two brilliant weekends in Assen and Mugello, Márquez finished again a perfect weekend on a high, getting the fastest time in the qualifying session and the win in the race. In addition, this time it has the added value to achieved in the home race of the leader of the classification, Germany's Stefan Bradl, who has seen his advantage in the overall standing reduced by five points.

Starting from the first position of the grid, Marc had a good start and reached the end of the straight beside Bradl. The German rider tried to snatch the first place but had an off in the first corner and Márquez was able to keep the lead. From that moment on, the Repsol rider started to set a fast pace to quickly divide the top group.

With a time of 1 minute, 27 seconds and 8 tenths in the first lap, Bradl was the only one able to keep his pace at firs, although a couple of laps later, Márquez was nearly half second ahead of his rival. Behind them, De Angelis, Luthi and Hernández caught with Bradl and in the eighth lap, De Angelis was even able to catch Márquez. After than laps went by with Márquez, De Angelis and Bradl on top. Bradl took the lead on lap 14 and tried to get some advantage, but Emilio Alzamora's pupil was always watchful and prevented the German from doing so.

In the last stage of the race, Márquez increased his pace and only Bradl, at first, could follow. But two laps before the end Marc built a 7 tenths margin over the German, who helplessly saw who is now his main rival in the battle for the Moto2 title crossing the finish line in first position. With this victory, Márquez reduces in 5 points Bradl's advantage in the overall standings —they are now separated by 47 points— and gets his third consecutive win, fourth of the season, after nine races.

Moto2 now starts the summer break and the action will resume in three weeks at Brno with the Czech Republic Grand Prix.

Marc Márquez

1st - 41:37.457

"It was a very hard-fought victory, and also very important as it was at the leader's home race. We are slowly getting more confidence and gathering kilometres, which I think is what we notice the most. Moreover, the team and I now understand each other perfectly and with Santi [Hernández] we are doing a great job, which is the most important thing.

I am gradually feeling better and I was able to notice it here because I could do a race in the same way as the 125cc race, letting them overtake me, studying them and then overtaking them and trying to push in the end. It worked well, but maybe in another race Stefan [Bradl] will be stronger.

This win is important because it is a circuit where you need to preserve the tyres and risk a bit in the end, because it was very slippery".


Scott Redding delivered his best performance in the 2011 Moto2 World Championship today, the Marc VDS Racing rider storming from outside the top 20 to finish seventh in a pulsating Sachsenring race.

Redding produced a scintillating first lap, climbing from 23rd on the grid into the top 15 and he was quickly inside the top ten after just seven laps, joining an exciting group battling for sixth place, headed by reigning World Supersport champion Kenan Sofuoglu.

A clinical pass on Sofuoglu on lap 10 moved Redding into seventh and he wasted no time in attacking Simone Corsi to claim sixth on the next lap.

By the time Redding made it to the front of the pack, Yonny Hernandez was more than three seconds clear in fifth. A tremendous series of consistently fast laps saw Redding cut the gap to two seconds, but he was unable to continue the chase when he encountered a rear grip problem having pushed so hard to fight his way into the top ten in the early stages.

Redding's joy was in stark contrast to luckless teammate Mika Kallio, who didn't even make it to the grid for the 29-lap encounter. Kallio's Suter MMXI suffered a fuel pressure problem in the pre-race warm-up session, so as a precaution his Marc VDS Racing crew changed several parts to alleviate the issue in time for the race.

But Kallio failed to complete the sighting lap when his bike stopped again, his Marc VDS Racing crew working frantically to rectify the problem in time for him to start the warm-up lap from pitlane. But he encountered a further problem and had to stop. The Marc VDS Racing Team is currently conducting a detailed analysis of Kallio's bike to diagnose the cause of his retirement.

Scott Redding #45 - 7th Position

"That was much more like it and it feels great to finish a weekend on a high after a few poor results. After the last race I knew I could make a lot of overtakes early on and that's exactly what I did. I managed to dodge the chaos at the first corner and just got my head down and attacked as hard as I could. It didn't take me long to get into the top six and it was really good fun. In the last few races I've usually gone backwards, so to be moving forward and making a lot of passes was great for my confidence. When I got into sixth I thought I could chase down Hernandez for fifth but I'd pushed so hard in the early laps that I'd worn the rear tyre a bit too much. When Krummenacher came by I knew he had a good pace and I thought he might drag me forward, but his bike had unbelievable traction and I couldn't do anything. Each time I tried to accelerate I was spinning. I had a good battle for seventh with Corsi at the end and managed to hold him off, which was satisfying because he is a hard rider and takes no prisoners."

Mika Kallio #36 - DNS

"There is not much I can say other than today is instantly forgettable and I am very upset. The Marc VDS Racing Team has put in a tremendous amount of work this weekend and after qualifying on the third row at one of my favourite tracks, we were confident of achieving a very strong result. So to not even start the race is incredibly hard to take. We are trying to learn what caused the problem but all I can do is stay motivated, train hard in the summer break and try and bounce back with a strong result in Brno."

Michael Bartholemy: Team Manager

"Scott did a fantastic job today and that was probably the best ride he's produced all season. He's had a better result, but to come from where he started on the grid to be fighting for sixth was a great performance. In the first eight laps he was as fast as the riders at the front despite being in heavy traffic. So I think that proved that with a better qualifying yesterday he could have been challenging for a podium today. Scott though demonstrated what he can do today and we have known all year that he's capable of delivering a race like that. It gives him a lot of confidence now to go into the summer break and return stronger in Brno. We have to investigate deeper what happened to Mika because at the moment we aren't sure why his bike stopped. After the warm-up when he had the fuel pressure problem, we took the bike apart to find a solution and we changed everything you can change that might have caused the problem. The bike started for the sighting lap but it stopped again at the last corner. We changed a fuse but it stopped again on the warm-up lap. It is a big shame for him because he'd qualified very well and he was optimistic of a strong race."


Teammate Jordi Torres has similar problem, but returns to track and finishes 21st

The Moto2 race at the Sachsenring had promised variation on the usual frontrunners, but eventually the usual suspects were the top riders on race day. Márquez, Bradl, De Angelis and Luthi were the main protagonists, but the starring roles went to the former pair. Márquez took the win from home rider Bradl, opening up a slight gap in the World Championship standings.

The MAPFRE Aspar riders are an optimistic duo, and at the Sachsenring they were forced to use their more positive side in analysing the race. Julián Simón began the race off the back of a great return to action, improving with every session and establishing himself as an outside bet for the victory. However, on race day his time on track was brief. The Spaniard crashed out on the opening corner of the German round, forcing him into early retirement from the race. The upside was that he was unhurt in the incident, and should be fully fit for the next race of the series at Brno.

Teammate Jordi Torres had a similar experience on turn one, as he ran off into the gravel trap. Returning to the track in last place, he moved up the field gradually and ended the day in 21st.

Julián Simón (DNF): "We all know that Moto2 is a difficult class, and that the opening laps are tough. I wanted to brake later at the end of the straight in order to not lose positions. I opened up a little and the back stepped out. It is a real shame, but the important thing is that I am ok and showed that I am back in shape after the injury. I was a little scared about my leg when I was rolling over. Even though the weekend didn't end well, I am happy with my good performance in practice since Friday. The team have been fantastic here at Sachsenring, and were amazingly dedicated throughout the weekend. I will never tire of expressing my gratitude to them, and to Dr. Ángel Villamor and Luis García for their fantastic job in treating me and giving me physiotherapy. We have a long break ahead of us, and I want to use it to recover fully."

21st Jordi Torres: "I started well, and at the end of the straight I tried to brake where everyone else was doing so. I went to turn in for the opening corner, but as I dipped the bike I was blocked in by a rider on my right. I saw Julián's crash as well, and this shook me a little as I was worried about his leg. I came back on track in last place and tried to focus on making up as many places as possible, but I was mainly concentrating on getting the feeling in the front end that I had been missing. The bike was working perfectly and the team were doing a stupendous job, so I must thank them for their effort. The positive thing is that we are improving quickly -I hope to show this in the Czech Republic."

Lüthi strong fifth despite tyre problems

Despite increasing tyre problems, Team Interwetten Paddock Moto2-star Thomas Lüthi battled to a strong fifth place at the German Grand Prix. The 24-year-old from Switzerland was caught up with Yonny Hernandez in a fight for fourth place on the opening ten laps of the race, but then managed to get ahead of the Columbian and closed the gap to the leading group with Stefan Bradl, Marc Márquez and Alex de Angelis. Only in the final stages of the race, Lüthi paid tribute to his early pace when his worn rear tyre started to slide and he dropped back to an eventual fifth. The result was still reason enough to celebrate for Team Interwetten Paddock Moto2. "Slowly but surely, Sachsenring is like a home race for us", smiled team manager Terrel Thien. "The fans here are awesome and Tom is adjusting more and more to this track. Of course we would have liked a podium finish, but in the last three or four laps, the rear tyre lost a lot of grip. But we are happy with our result this weekend and we already are looking forward to next year!"

Thomas Lüthi – 5th in 1.25,434 min.:

"I went well through the first corner and was able to defend myself. I managed to overtake a few more riders on the first lap and was in sixth position when the battle with Hernandez started. He resisted for a long time, but eventually I got past him, too and managed to close in on the leading group of riders. But when I started to think about preserving my tyres, it was already too late. With six laps to go, the rear started to slide badly and I had no chance to defend myself when Randy Krummenacher came from behind. Fifth is still a very positive result for us and I am satisfied. I also want to congratulate Randy who rode a terrific race!"

Alfred Willecke – crew chief:

"Of course we can be satisfied with our fifth place even though more would have been possible. As Tom told me, our rear tyre wore out too early which is why he lost one position to Krummenacher. We will now analyse our set-up again and try to avoid a similar problem in the future!"

Neukirchner taken out by another rider

West battles heroically – for 23rd place

Bad luck for local hero Max Neukirchner at the German Moto2-Grand Prix on the Sachsenring: The 28-year-old MZ factory rider had already taken seventh position after a brilliant start and was about to attack Aleix Espargaro, when the Spaniard crashed directly in front of him and took Neukirchner out.

Up until then, everything had worked out for Neukirchner who was born only a few kilometres away from the Sachsenring. After two good days o practice, he went into the race from eleventh position on the starting grid and did lap times that would have enabled him to fight for a top five position. Instead, he became an innocent crash victim. "What am I supposed to say? It was bad luck for us", was the only comment of his crew chief Marco Nicotari.

Team-mate Anthony West had struggled with chassis problems throughout the weekend and was down in 31st position on the grid which makes it almist impossible to battle for points in this hard-fought category. But West, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Sunday with a big cake that he was surprised with in the morning, pulled all stops, made up ground wherever he possibly could and managed to get 23rd place.

Max Neukirchner – crash:

"I felt great in the race and I was able to match the pace of the leading pack of riders. Our bike had a set-up that would have made it better and better towards the end, with used tyres. I am really disappointed!"

Anthony West – 23rd:

"I had a good start, but I wasn't used to my bike because we had modified the set-up in practice over and over again. On lap three, I braked exactly at the same point as on the previous laps, but this time, I had to go straight and ended in the gravel. I lost seven seconds and was last when I re-entered the track. I am sorry for the MZ fans because I wanted to do well at our home race. I hope they had fun anyway!"


Michele Pirro's high hopes for today's race at Sachsenring were not quite met, the Italian youngster taking a tenth place finish that left him feeling disappointed, having qualified fourth on the grid. Things went even worse for Yuki Takahashi, who was forced to walk back to the pits after an engine problem with his Moriwaki MD600. After two crashes yesterday it has been a weekend to forget for the Japanese.

Michele Pirro (10th) "I was expecting a little more today after our qualifying performance but I lost a lot of positions at the start and struggled to recover. I am disappointed not to finish higher up but after the crash at Mugello it was important to finish and in that sense it was a positive day. Now we have a long break and I hope we can come back competitive at Brno."

Yuki Takahashi (DNF) "The two crashes yesterday didn't help us prepare for today and definitely had an effect in the race. From the tenth lap I started to lose power and eventually had to pull in. I am disappointed for the team but I can promise them that I will be going at to give them a positive result at Brno."

Fausto Gresini "Not much to say! We were fast in practice but the crashes for Yuki yesterday compromised his performance today and be cause of the engine breakdown he wasn't even able to finish the race. We were hoping for better for Pirro from fourth on the grid but after losing positions at the start it was hard for him to make them up. Hopefully the break is good for us to get back on track at Brno."

Márquez and Suter Racing Technology celebrate third victory in a row

Suter MMXI rider Marc Márquez conquered his third victory in a row at the German Prix and narrowed the gap in the point rankings to his title rival Stefan Bradl, who finished second at his home race. In front of a massive crowd on the sold-out Sachsenring, Márquez swept into the lead after the start and kept first place comfortably until well after mid-race. Then, he stayed behind Bradl for a while but was back in the lead when it counted. In the end, he pulled away by almost one second to celebrate another epic win.

Switzerland's Suter MMXI star Tom Lüthi seemed to be able to also fight for a podium finish. Recovering quickly from his 12th positon on the grid, the 24-year-old held fourth place for more than half the race distance, but dropped back behind his Swiss rival Randy Krummenacher with two laps to go because of excessive wear of his rear tyre.

Julian Simon, who started his comeback race after a tibia fracture from fifth place on the grid, crashed on his way to the first corner but luckily escaped without further injuries. After that, Scott Redding became third best Suter MMXI rider. Starting from 23rd on the grid, the Briton hunted down half the field to take an impressive seventh place.

Frenchman Jules Cluzel took tenth place, Kenan Sofuoglu from Turkey and Dominique Aegerter from Switzerland finished in eleventh and twelfth position. With Andrea Iannone in 14th and Claudio Corti in 15th spot, a total of eight Suter MMXI riders reached the point rankings.

"Congratulations to Márquez – with pole positon and victory, he presented us with a fantastic weekend once again", said Reto Karrer, Moto2 designer at Suter Racing Technology. "It was a thrilling race with Bradl, de Angelis and Lüthi who also showed that he is back within the top group of Moto2 riders. Unfortunately, the performance of his rear tyre dropped a bit too much towards the end."

"Scott Redding and Dominique Aegerter recovered amazingly from their poor gird positions. Dominique was only 28th at the start and finished in twelfth place, confirming his great fighting spirit. He now needs to improve his qualifying performance, then he will be a top contender as well."

"Congratulations also to Randy Krummenacher, the third rider from Switzerland in the Moto2 field. On his way to fourth place he did lap times that the front group of riders wasn't able to do. He was unbelievably strong!"

Season Starts Over At Sachsenring For Kenny Noyes

Kenny Noyes was finally able to put in a normal race weekend at the Sachsenring, after his Avintia-STX team finally discovered the issue that had prevented them from finding the right setup for his FOGI-Racing FTR for the past four races. The fault was finally traced to a set of defective tire warmers which had been overheating his tires and taking all the grip out of them before they turned a wheel on the track. With a fresh set of warmers, Kenny was finally able to get through a normal weekend of working that saw him fight his way through to finish 20th.

There were problems along the way: two crashes on Saturday saw him lose all of Saturday morning and the last ten minutes of qualifying, then a minor collision at the start of the hectic Moto2 race bent Kenny's clutch lever upwards and out of shape. Once he adapted his shifting to handle the bent lever, Kenny fought his way forward to dice with Xavier Simeon, Mattia Pasini and Axel Pons. A mistake on the last lap saw Kenny lose 19th to Pasini, but the American was happy just to be able to race and have the bike respond as he expected.

The Avintia-STX rider now heads off for some well-earned rest and relaxation before the Moto2 paddock assembles again at Brno. With his home race at Indianapolis two weeks' after Brno, Kenny will be using the Brno race to work with his team on perfecting the setup on his FOGI-Racing FTR. The season started afresh at the Sachsenring, and Kenny is raring to go for the next eight races.

Kenny said, "I was so relieved that my team finally identified the problem with the tire warmers. Turns out we'd raced at Catalunya, Silverstone, Assen and Mugello with tires that were completely fried, so it was fantastic to be able to go out and feel good in the race. We had a few rear grip issues, but now they're exactly the same ones all the other riders are having too."

"I did low 26s in the middle of the race, so I'm close to the pace again. I got hit on the start which bent the clutch lever up, so I was basically last on the first laps, which definitely hurt us. But I was just having fun on the bike again, running a pace that was respectable, and having a battle with Pasini, Simeon and Pons."

"Now it all makes sense again when I'm riding the bike. I'm racing guys that just blew by me ever since Catalunya. This is Moto2, it's a tough category, you mess up the start and it's hard to come back, but at least now, I'm in the same game as everybody else."

FARMINGDALE, NJ – July 18th, 2011 – Bel-Ray Company, Inc. – Bel-Ray Racing-Weekend Wrap-Up

This past weekend proved to quite exciting for Bel-Ray's professional racing teams.

Tech3 Moto2 team racer Bradley Smith came into Germany with the momentum of 3 consecutive podium finishes. Smith would start the race from the third row and while making his move on the pack, Smith was forced off the racing line and into the gravel trap when he was going into the first turn. Smith was quick to rejoin the racing action, but had to do battle from the back of the field. Using all of his skills, Smith was able to put on a charge through the field and up into 17th place by lap 16. While diving into Turn 3, Smith lost the front end and went down. He was unable to get his bike running again and was forced out of the race. It was his first DNF of the season. Smith's misfortune pushed him back to 5th in the overall points standings. Teammate Mike DiMeglio also had a difficult weekend and was only able to manage a 16th by the end of the race. The series returns to action in the Czech Republic on August 14th.
