Rins locks down front row start, Marquez qualifies on second line

Alex Rins second in qualifying for Catalan GP, whilst teammate Alex Marquez takes his best ever World Championship grid position with fourth.

The grid for tomorrow’s Moto3 race will see both Repsol riders high up the order. Alex Rins was second quickest in qualifying for the sixth round of the championship, with Alex Marquez fourth.

In the morning practice session, Rins signalled his intentions with the fastest lap. In the afternoon he was a frontrunner from the start, exchanging the top spot with Maverick Viñales. Just past the halfway point in the session, the young protégé of Emilio Alzamora jumped up to first, almost until the end. However, he eventually placed second, as Luis Salom took pole right at the death.

Alex Marquez continued his progress in the World Championship. After a great performance at the Italian Grand Prix, the Spaniard today hit a personal milestone; qualifying fourth, Marquez will start from his highest position on the grid for a GP event.

Alex Rins

FP3: 1:51.450, 15 laps, 71 km.

QP: 1:51.108, 18 laps, 85 km.

“We are very happy with the pace that we had during qualifying. We focused on riding on our own at a fast pace; yesterday we found the right setup for the race and that allowed us to get some good practice in today. I think that tomorrow’s race will be rather difficult, bearing in mind the heat and the amount of riders on track. We will have to ride a thinking man’s race.”

Alex Marquez

FP3: 1:51.988, 15 laps, 71 km.

“The feeling today was very good. In the morning we took a step forward and in the afternoon we were hoping to improve a little more, although in the end we took fourth position. That is very good, but we still need to polish up a few things in the warmup tomorrow, because I still don’t feel completely comfortable. I think that we have a good pace with worn tyres and we have a good race ahead. I want to thank the team for all of their work, because it is helping me a lot and we are gradually making the bike very competitive.”

Salom perfect in pursuit of pole

Red Bull KTM Ajo rider takes second pole position of the season for Catalan GP. Arthur Sissis and Zulfahmi Khairuddin improve for eleventh and sixteenth, respectively.

A 1:50.782 lap from Luis Salom gave pole position to the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider at the Circuit de Catalunya on Saturday. It will be Salom’s second of the season. Teammates Arthur Sissis and Zulfahmi Khairuddin found a better feeling with their bikes compared to yesterday and will start from rows four and six, respectively.

The three Red Bull KTM Ajo riders began the second day of practice for round six of the Moto3 World Championship with a final practice session. In excellent conditions, Salom was one of only three riders to break the 1:52 barrier. Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Sissis improved on their Friday times by more than a second.

In the main event of the day, qualifying, Salom broke the circuit record with a storming lap on his fourteenth time around. The Spaniard was the only rider to clock a time quicker than 1:51. Sissis —who today celebrates his eighteenth birthday— found a good setup for his bike and set a hot lap of 1:52.382 by himself. Zulfahmi Khairuddin also bettered his morning time, with a 1:52.568 lap.

Tomorrow’s race will take place at 11am local time.

Luis Salom

"I'm pretty happy, although we will see about tomorrow, because it will be a very difficult race. It will be a very large group at the front, like in the race at Mugello, but I think we can be up there fighting. With the team we are trying to do the best job possible, not look at what others are doing, and then see the result of that. Aki [Ajo] is helping me a lot with his work.

During the practice I rode with used tires, trying to find a good feeling, and the truth is that I am also happy with that. It will be a bit of a mystery as to how they work in the race, because the timeslot is different to every other session".

Arthur Sissis

"At the beginning of the weekend could not ride fast and I thought I would not have a very happy birthday. But today we made some changes to the bike and I improved my riding. In the qualifying session I tried to follow some other riders in order to achieve a good lap, but I couldn’t find anyone and I went for it alone. I was surprised that I took that time by myself, so I'm pretty happy.

For tomorrow I know I can get a good pace and I have a solid position on the grid, so I hope that in the race —although the first group is very fast— we can be in the second pack".

"We improved our lap times, but it wasn’t enough to get into the top ten, which was our aim. I am not far off, but we will have to keep focused and try to have a good race tomorrow".

MotoGP Moto3 - San Carlo Team Italia FMI seizes eighth and eleventh row in Barcelona

Unfortunate qualifiers for Fenati and Bagnaia, penalized by technical issues in the torrid heat

After taking more than 1/5 seconds off his best lap times during the last free practice session, Romano Fenati (San Carlo Team Italia FMI FTR Honda#5) could not improve during QP due to a technical issue. The Italian, who posted the 22nd time, + 2.010 behind Salom's record lap (1'50.782), still has a faster pace in cooler conditions, which are supposed to accompany tomorrow's race.

Francesco Bagnaia (San Carlo Team Italia FMI FTR Honda#4) only completed 3 laps due to electrical problems. The rookie posted the 32nd time (+ 3.718) and counts on tomorrow's WUP and his experience on the Catalan track to come back during the race.

Romano Fenati

"I was sincerely hoping to do better, but I had a problem with my exhaust pipe in the last laps. In the morning I found a strong pace and could have started closer to the front. What matters is tomorrow's result, and I'm counting on gaining several positions."

Eighth row start for Niklas Ajo

Avant Tecno KTM rider gets back on bike after Friday crash and improves times. He will start tomorrow from 23rd.

15/06/2013 - Circuit de Catalunya

Despite suffering pain in his legs, Niklas Ajo did not want to miss the second day of practice for the Catalan Grand Prix. The crash suffered yesterday in the second free practice session did not prevent him from besting his times in the morning free practice today, and he then looked for a strong qualifying run. His 1:52.876 lap earned him 23rd on the grid, on row eight.

Niklas Ajo went out determined to improve in the third and final free practice session. The Avant Tecno KTM rider managed to quickly find the good feeling for which he had searched yesterday, and it was on his final runout that he picked up a consistently fast pace. His best lap of 1:52.613 was the eleventh fastest of the morning.

In the qualifying session he improved his pace despite the high track temperatures of up to 48°C. After twelve laps the Avant Tecno KTM rider set his best time of the session: 1:52.876. Luis Salom took pole, whilst Niklas could not improve his position due to traffic on track.

The lights go out at 11am for the Moto3 race tomorrow at the Circuit de Catalunya.

"During the morning session the feeling was much better, but I had hurt my feet slightly in yesterday's crash in FP2. That's why riding the bike was a little more complicated. However, in the first session today we improved the bike setup, and when the track had got up to a good temperature I felt comfortable and rode at a good pace. In the afternoon in the qualifying session, the track temperature went up and I suffered a lot.

That made me lose confidence on the fast corners –that was even more so when I saw Maverick [Viñales] crash right in front of me and almost touch my bike. After that, I could not find the good feeling again, but on the closing laps I was able to do well –however, there was too much traffic."

Disappointment at RW Racing GP

With 17th position for Jakub Kornfeil and 26th for Jasper Iwema RW Racing GP could not be satisfied. The qualifying session for the Moto3 race of the Catalan GP began so good, with both riders in the top 10 for a while. But it didn’t last. Kornfeil pointed to a bad rear tire that cost him his confidence. Iwema just could not get a really fast lap on the tarmac of Montmélo.

Jakub Kornfeil started the second day with a new engine. In combination with the new fairing the concept seemed to work well and Kornfeil was happy with his Kalex KTM. The problems he encountered on the first day were solved. It took the morning session to get the engine working and Kornfeil was ready to fight for a good position in the qualifying session. With a few minutes to go he got out of the pits again with a new tire. And that didn’t work. The tire didn’t give Kornfeil a good feeling and he could not get his bike to the limit for a fast lap time.

Jasper Iwema had a good start of the qualifying session, but could not hold on. He had a nice tow with Alex Marquez, but made a little mistake in the final part of the lap. And that is what happened all the time: a little mistake here, a little bad luck there. It just didn’t work for Iwema today.

Jakub Kornfeil (17): "What a terrible result. I’m really very disappointed. My bike was good, my feeling was good, it was just that one bad tire that ruined my qualification. It is going to take a lot of effort to catch up. I’m afraid I’ll have to be happy with top 10.’’

Jasper Iwema (26): "I wasn’t fast enough. The bike was working well, but I just could not get that one perfect lap out of it. 26th is way too far back, but it is not impossible to fight for points. I think the tires will be a problem for everybody with these temperatures. Hopefully we can figure out a good strategy.’’


GRANOLLERS (SPAIN), June 15, 2013 - The day of qualifying session for the Grand Prix of Catalunya, has seen the CAME Iodaracing Team starring in the Moto2 class with Johann Zarco. The Frenchman, won the second row of the grid for tomorrow's race thanks to its 1.47.213, sixth fastest time in the middle class. Zarco will start his race behind Pol Espargarò (Kalex), Scott Redding (Kalex) and Esteve Rabat (Kalex) that are in the front row, and Takaaki Nakagami (Kalex) and Alex de Angelis (SpeedUp) behind him. After the podium at Mugello and after verification of the pace in the practice session, the expectations are very high for both the CAME Iodaracing Team, for the same Johann Zarco.

In MotoGP, the two CAME Iodaracing Team riders worked to get the best possible position in the starting grid of the premier class. Between the two, Danilo Petrucci was able to secure the sixth fastest time among the drivers with the CRT bikes, the 18 th overall in 1.44.369, while Lukas Pesek has failed to rise from 23 ° absolute time, 11th among the CRT . The goal for both is in the race to gain positions in order to conquer world championship points.

JOHANN ZARCO - Moto2 rider - 1.47.213 - 6th TIME - SECOND ROW - "The second row here was one of my goals. It's important to start from the front to avoid the risk of dangerous groups of slow riders. Tomorrow in the warm up we will try a few changes to improve the grip of the bike, because we are not yet at the level of our rivals. DANILO PETRUCCI - MOTOGP RIDER - 1.44.369 - 18th TIME - SIXTH ROW - "I am quite satisfied even if I was hoping to at least starting from the fifth row. I could not improve as the others in this session is a sin. The excessive heat has problems given trip. Tomorrow I am quite optimistic. We have a good race pace and we have reduced the gap with respect to the Mugello from Barbera and De Puniet although we are not yet close. The bike is working well since yesterday even though we have some traction problem in the middle of the curve, but this could be caused by the heat. My goal remains to stay in the points, but in these conditions will be really hard. "

LUKAS PESEK - MOTOGP RIDER - 1.46.302 - 23th TIME - EIGHTH ROW - "I'm really baffled. The desire to do well made me commit so many mistakes and I threw away the qualifications. Tomorrow we will give my best. The set up of the bike is good and I feel able to make a decent race. "


The MAPFRE Aspar rider qualified 25th but knows he has the pace to get through the pack as he did at Mugello

The initial laps of Moto3 qualifying at Catalunya looked more like a race than an official practice at Catalunya, with the riders bunching together to try and benefit from slipstreaming on the long straight. Maverick Viñales started the session on top but then a crash and a technical fault left him out of the fight for pole. But top spot on the grid still went to a Spaniard with Luis Salom grabbing pole and with six local riders in the top seven. It should mean a tightly contested race tomorrow with a pack of riders at the front just as there was in Mugello. The top riders showed great pace on Saturday and the pole record set last year was beaten by almost two seconds.

Eric Granado has improved constantly since he arrived at the Circuit de Catalunya having taken almost two seconds off his own best time over the course of the weekend so far. He had been riding towards the top ten but was unable to find a good slipstream in the second half of qualifying to register a faster time. He therefore registered his best lap of 1’52.910 to take 25th on the grid with a turn of the track completed alone. The Brazilian knows he has the pace to try a comeback in the race and replicate his Mugello heroics.

25th Eric Granado 1’52.910 (17 laps): “All the riders know this track really well and the majority of them are so fast here so the difference between the lap times is fractional. In the morning we did well and improved on yesterday’s time and position significantly. The time improved again this afternoon but not the position which is a shame because I think it was just lack of experience which cost me. If I’d been a bit more alert I could have caught a slipstream from another rider and taken off a few tenths. Looking at the positives I did my best lap time alone so I hope my pace will mean I’m competitive for the race. I made a tyre change on my last stop but the feeling wasn’t great so I couldn’t qualify any higher. I’m relaxed though as I can make a comeback like at Mugello”.

Danny Kent targets first points in Moto2

British rider Danny Kent will start tomorrow’s Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya full of confidence that he can challenge for his first Moto2 World Championship points after a positive qualifying performance in sizzling heat today.

Kent will start the 23-lap race from 17th position on the grid, the Tech 3 Racing Team rider capitalizing on a morale-boosting recent test session in Mugello to finish just over 0.5s outside of the top six at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona.

Without the time constraints of a Moto2 weekend, Kent was able to improve his confidence and feeling on the Mistral 610 machine and today he was able to show more of the potential that took him to two victories in the new Moto3 category last year.

Kent posted a best time of 1.47.803, which was only just over 0.7s from compatriot and World Championship leader Scott Redding in second position. The most pleasing aspect of Kent’s performance today was his consistency and he is now confident that he be in the hunt for a top 15 finish tomorrow.

Louis Rossi will start from a further six places back, the Frenchman less than 0.2s behind as today’s timesheets once again perfectly illustrated the close level of competition in Moto2. Less than two seconds covered the top 31 riders and Rossi’s personal best of 1.47.986 was less than a second off the front row.

Danny Kent 17th 1.47.803 -21 laps:

“I am happy with today’s qualifying because the position and time is much closer to where we need to be. It’s not my best result of the year, but I believe in terms of consistency it’s definitely the best performance I have put in on track so far. I’m also happy about the positive feeling with the bike that I carried over from the test day in Mugello and I’m really confident for tomorrow. I just have to do a good start and be a bit more aggressive during the opening laps because during the previous races I always lose positions at that stage of the race and then I struggle to recover them later.”

Louis Rossi 23rd 1.47.986 – 20 laps:

“During the whole weekend we have made consistent progress and I have found a lot of confidence coming back. We resolved a couple of issues I’ve been experiencing like sliding on corner entry and now the bike is working much better for me. I can finally say I enjoy riding the bike again and that is the most important thing after some tough races. Obviously we are a little upset about the result of qualifying because I decided to ride alone for the whole weekend to understand better what I do on the bike. But this strategy is difficult for qualifying, as I did not have any slipstream. Anyway after looking at the timesheets I saw that I could have been 15th on the grid if I did my fastest sector times in the same lap and that gives me huge confidence for tomorrow.”

On form Redding qualifies second in sweltering Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain - 15 June 2013: Scott Redding will start tomorrow's Moto2 Grand Prix de Catalunya from the front row of the grid, after posting the second fastest time in this afternoon's qualifying session, which was held in sweltering conditions. Mika Kallio will start from 12th position on the grid, after set-up issues left him unable to close the half-second gap to his Marc VDS teammate.

Fourth fastest in the cooler conditions of free practice this morning, Redding waited until the very end of this afternoon's 45-minute qualifying session before showing his hand. The 20-year-old Briton posted his fastest lap of the weekend with just minutes of the session remaining, to qualify on the front row of the grid for the fifth time in six races.

Kallio tested revised rear suspension settings on his Kalex Moto2 machine during this morning's free practice session, but was forced to switch back to the previous set-up due to a reduction in rear grip. The 30-year-old Finn managed to improve his previous best lap time by over half a second, but was disappointed to miss out on a position on the front three rows of the grid by just one tenth.

Both Marc VDS riders complained of a lack of top speed from their engines, which were supplied new for this race on Thursday afternoon. Neither Redding nor Kallio could pass out of the slipstream - crucial on the long main straight here at Catalunya - but were easy prey for riders coming up behind them. The team will look into the issue tonight, as a top speed deficit would be a major disadvantage in tomorrow's 23-lap race.

Livio Loi put in his best qualifying performance of the season so far in Barcelona, to secure 13th position on the fifth row of the grid for tomorrow's 22-lap Moto3 race. The 16-year-old Belgian improved his lap time by more than a second during this morning's final free practice session, while running in a fast group that included Alex Marquez and eventual polesitter, Luis Salom. Loi carried this pace into this afternoon's 40-minute qualifying session, finishing just two-tenths outside the top ten.

Scott Redding #45: 2nd - 1'47.029

"I'm happy, but also a little frustrated, because we had a problem with the engine during qualifying. The speed just wasn't there and I was struggling to pass slower riders out of the slipstream on the straight. It meant I had to out brake them into turn one instead and that cost me time. The tyres were dropping off after just three or four laps, which meant the rear was spinning up hard instead of driving forward. We need to have a little look tonight to see if we can find something more for tomorrow, but to be on the front row to keep the pressure on means I'm pretty happy with today."

Mika Kallio #36: 12th - 1'47.540

"The situation is not much different to Mugello two weeks ago. We made a change to the rear suspension set-up for free practice, which gave a better feeling, but it left us with little rear grip and we had to switch back again for qualifying. I managed to improve the lap time, but it's not enough. One tenth more and I'd have been top nine, which is always the target. The biggest problem is a lack of power from the engine. I can't overtake out of the slipstream, but other riders don't seem to have the same problem. This is something we need to look into tonight because it's going to make overtaking in the race very difficult. We're one place higher on the grid than in Mugello so the plan will be the same, I just hope the result will be too."

Livio Loi #11: 13th - 1'52.479

"This morning in final free practice we made a big step with the lap time. I was with a fast group and it was exactly what I needed, as I was able to run the same pace as them quite comfortably. This afternoon in qualifying it was quite hard, like always, because there are so many fast riders out there. I made my best lap time right at the start of my last run, but I was on an even faster lap, with at least one red helmet on the timesheet, when I hit traffic and had to back off. I'm happy enough with 13th position on the grid, but it would have been nice to have finished that last lap properly, which would probably have put me one row higher."

Michael Bartholemy: Team Principal

"I think Livio has learnt a lot this year already, and it was good to see him putting those lessons into practice today. His pace increased by more than a second in free practice, just because he was in with a fast group for most of the session. He carried that pace into qualifying, where he secured his best grid position of the season so far. If he races cleverly tomorrow then he could be in with an outside chance of a top ten finish. Scott qualified well today, on a bike that was visibly down on power. Mika had other issues with the bike, but he also commented that he didn't have the top speed he'd normally expect here. This is something we need to investigate tonight, as Moto2 is tough enough without giving away 10 km/h, as in Scott's case, on the straight."


The colours of Team GO&FUN Gresini Moto3 will be present on the third and sixth rows of the grid in tomorrow's Catalan Grand Prix after Niccolò Antonelli and Lorenzo Baldassarri qualified ninth and eighteenth fastest respectively. Niccolò struggled a little bit with the high track temperatures this afternoon but his pace was good in the morning free practice, which is a good sign for a race that gets underway at 11am. Baldassarri's only regret was that he couldn't be more decisive in the final moments of the session but both riders remain optimistic of a positive result tomorrow.

Niccolò Antonelli (9th 1’ 52” 105 ) “I am happy, especially because we have a fast and consistent race pace for tomorrow. Unfortunately the high temperatures this afternoon gave us a few problems but I am still positive because the race conditions should be more similar to free practice this morning and I felt much better then.”

Lorenzo Baldassarri (18th 1’ 52” 627) “Not bad... I am quite satisfied but we could have done much better if I could have made the most of the last couple of minutes of the session. I am a bit annoyed about that but still confident about the race because I have a good feeling with the bike and the track and tomorrow I will give my maximum.”

Fausto Gresini “I am satisfied with the session this afternoon and what we have seen from Niccolò, because he has secured an important third row start and he has a good race pace. Baldassarri continues to make progress despite struggling with his size on these small bikes and it is good to see his determination translating into positive results and a a feeling of confidence in the rider and team.”


The MAPFRE Aspar man is on row three, while his colleague Nico Terol, starts from row seven

The heat was the key factor of the day for the Moto2 riders at Montmeló, with the track temperatures reaching 50ºC during qualifying. Most of the top riders recorded their best times early in the session, with Scott Redding’s late push into second place the only movement at the top of the timesheet towards the end. Espargaró was back to his dominant form at the front of the pack, but from second place down to 20th on the grid the riders were split by just one second, meaning it should be a fantastic race on Sunday.

In this scenario of controlled chaos, the two MAPFRE Aspar find themselves involved in that packed bunch. Jordi Torres proved that his good Friday times were no fluke and was one of the protagonists, improving his feeling with the bike to feature near the top. He ended up seventh and so therefore starts at the head of row three, with pódium aspirations and a good chance of his best result of the season. Nico Terol was struggling with bike set-up and rear grip, but worked hard to find some stability – which was costing him time and crucial ground on track. He ended up 20th despite trying numerous solutions so he will keep working hard in warm up to find a better set up for the race.

20th Nico Terol 1’47.808 (17 laps): “Throughout the weekend I’ve been having grip problems and when I try to push it the bike is sliding so we’re not progressing. Apart from Pol at the front all the rest of the riders are close in terms of times but it’s no excuse, I’m well behind. I pushed really hard towards the end and nearly crashed, it’s been a tough weekend so far. But we know the way this category is, anything can happen. We won’t get down about it, we’ll just work hard tomorrow to improve. I’m starting quite far back so I have nothing to lose, I’ll aim to start well and go on the attack.”

7th Jordi Torres 1’47.258 (19 laps): “Yesterday we were sturggling for feeling but today we’ve started to find the way forward. I think we can go faster and we’ll try a couple of things in the warm up. Even though we’ve taken a step forward the front end is still too reactive so we need to find more stability. We have to be happy in general because we have a good package. A good start tomorrow is going to be crucial because it’s a long drive to the first corner so you don’t want to lose too many positions. I want to get on it like at Mugello and fight the riders I come up against.”


Today proved to be another day to forget for Ratthapark Wilairot, who made a mistake in qualifying practice this afternoon and crashed. The Thai rider will start from 28th on the grid tomorrow in a race that he must at least finish.

Ratthapark Wilairot (28th 1’ 48” 240 ) “ I am massively disappointed for the team and I want to say sorry to them because another crash was not what we needed. I didn't have a good feeling with the bike and I made a mistake in turn five but as I tried to make up for it on the way into turn 6 I lost the front. Tomorrow we simply have to make it to the finish. That is my main objective. ”

Fausto Gresini “There's not much to say! Another crash that we didn't need leaves a bitter taste because Feem has the potential to do well but at the moment he is not turning it into results. ”


The Circuit de Catalunya has proven to be a hard nut to crack for Moto2 World Championship rookie Doni Tata Pradita, who has struggled to get to grips with the track after two days here. The Indonesian rider has never stopped wor king but he faces a big challenge in the race tomorrow as he looks to make up positions from 33rd on the grid.
