Voltcom Crescent Suzuki set for Spanish second round

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki is eager to get back into competitive action as it finally takes to the track this weekend for the second round of the eni FIM Superbike World Championship after a seven-week break.

Spain’s Motorland Aragon is the destination for the opening European round of the Championship; while another new circuit for rookie Alex Lowes, the track holds a chequered history for teammate Eugene Laverty. A podium, a front-row start and two DNF’s sum-up Laverty’s past two-seasons at the Spanish track, and the latter’s demons are certainly something he is hoping to put to rest aboard his new Yoshimura-powered GSX-R.

Laverty and Lowes have both continued to make progress with the British-based Suzuki squad, after Laverty’s first round victory at Phillip Island in Australia, in late February. A recent test in Jerez, though frustrating at times, continued to yield the results the Voltcom Crescent Suzuki team was aiming for. Lowes has been working tirelessly to rehabilitate the injury suffered at the Australian circuit, and is confident that his fitness has returned to the standard he needs to learn the track quickly, and be competitive this weekend.

The Motorland Aragon race and leisure complex is located just outside Alcaniz, approximately 250kms from both Barcelona and Valencia. Built in 2009, and based on the historic street-racing legacy of the area, the track has hosted the World Superbike Championship for the past three years. Comprising four main layout options, the FIM designated circuit measures 5.078m, and features seven right-hand, and ten left-hand corners throughout its undulating Herman Tilke design, with the longest straight reaching 968m. The track’s blind crests, downhill turns, and 50m gradient changes, make it a thrilling, but challenging venue for riders, machines, and tyres, and a perfect showcase for the championship’s first round on European soil.

Voltcom Crescent Suzuki’s first track session is scheduled for 11:45hrs local time (10:45BST) on Friday morning, the first three free-practice sessions will be timed for qualifying, with a final non-timed 30-minutes on track, ahead of Saturday’s Superpole contests starting at 15:00hrs local time (14:00BST). The two Superbike World Championship races will be held earlier than in previous years, under a new-look race programme for 2014, running at 10:30hrs (09:30BST) and 13:10hrs (12:10BST) on Sunday 13th April.

Eugene Laverty:

"We enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, but we'll need to continue our form to stay at the sharp end of the title fight. Phillip Island has always been kind to the GSX-R, but the real test will come at Aragon. My aim is to stand on the rostrum on Sunday, and if we can do that, then it will be a job well done. We've been improving the bike over the past few months but it's still a work in progress. Rome was not built in a day!"

Alex Lowes:

“I can’t wait for Aragon; this is where my season starts! I’m really looking forward to learning the track on the Suzuki GSX-R1000. My plan is to start to build up some solid results here, that we can improve on as we progress through the season. My fitness is good, and I’ve been working really hard since Australia; I still don’t have 100% movement in my ankle but it is improving all the time, and I’m confident I can do a good job this weekend.”

Pata Honda returns to Spanish Superbike action

Following a seven-week hiatus since the opening round at Phillip Island in Australia the Pata Honda team returns to World Superbike action this weekend (11-13 April) at Motorland Aragon in Spain.

The team’s British pairing of Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam will be seeking to build on the potential of the new Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP that was demonstrated in part at Phillip Island but which has been further developed at two Spanish tests since, at Cartagena and Jerez.

With continuing refinements to a revised electronics system and new components tested on the CBR’s cultivated chassis, both riders are confident of having a strong all-round package to tackle the technically demanding 5.344km Hermann Tilke-designed Aragon track.

The World Superbike action gets underway at 11.45 local time on Friday 11 April with the first of two free practice sessions that day. Combined times from those and a third free practice session at 09.45 on Saturday morning will determine which riders progress to the afternoon’s two-part Superpole session.

Race day at Aragon features a revised WSBK schedule in which the first of the two 20-lap races goes at 10.30 on Sunday morning. Race two starts at 13.10.

Jonathan Rea - championship position 7th

I really like the Aragon circuit – it’s a well-designed track that I enjoy riding. We’ve tested there quite a lot in recent years, too, so I know my way round there pretty well. We had a good test at the end of last season and were able to improve our race pace from earlier in the year, when I finished fourth in race one. But since Phillip Island, we’ve had some software updates and some new chassis components that we were waiting on so we’re in a much better position to go racing. Aragon’s long straight might not suit the bike quite as well as it suits others, but the circuit needs a good all-round package which we definitely have with the new CBR. I’m looking forward to working with my team through the weekend to get the best set-up and hopefully, with a clean Friday and Saturd ay, we can be challenging at the front come raceday.

Leon Haslam - championship positon 11th

It seems a while ago now, but I remember Australia as being not such a good weekend for us. After a really positive test there, we had some issues with the new race-spec engines, but the team has been working flat out since to get a good base map and they’ve done some good development work with the traction control. As a result, the bike is now much more usable and rider-friendly so I’m really looking forward to round two at Aragon this weekend. I’ve never had particularly good results there but Johnny [Rea] showed some good pace in one of the races last year so we’re confident that the bike can go well there. It’s another race for us to keep up this development work to get the Fireblade to a place where we can challenge for podiums again.

Since Phillip Island we have been working very hard on the overall CBR package and have had some positive results from six days of testing in Spain. We achieved all our objectives and it will be interesting to see where we are in comparison to our rivals this weekend and to see if our podium potential can be realised. I think that Jonathan’s fourth place in race one last year was probably a fair reflection of where we were then. We have worked a lot on developing our braking system since last year, too, and that will be important for the heavy braking zone at the end of Aragon’s long back straight. We had a good test at Aragon last November and we’ll be looking to combine the settings we had then with our recent steps forward.

Motorland Aragón is next destination for the Ducati Superbike Team

Borgo Panigale (Italy), Tuesday 8 April 2014 - Almost six weeks after Round 1 of the Superbike World Championship concluded at Phillip Island, Australia, the Ducati Superbike Team now prepares to travel to Spain and the Motorland Aragón circuit for Round 2.

More than a month since the season’s opening round concluded in Australia, the Ducati Superbike Team is keen to return to the racetrack for this weekend’s second championship round, with the Superbikes heading to Motorland Aragón for the fourth consecutive year. The track is situated in Alcañiz, approximately 100 kilometres from the city of Zaragoza.

Factory rider Chaz Davies scored the double race win at the Spanish track last season, crossing the line five seconds ahead of his closest rivals in both of the day’s races. Davide Giugliano had been enjoying a positive weekend too, and found himself battling for a podium spot in Race 1 right up until the final corners of the race when a problem prevented him from crossing the line. A frontrunner again in Race 2, the Italian closed in eventual fourth position.

This year the Ducati Superbike team’s championship campaign got off to a positive start at Phillip Island in Australia. Giugliano, at ease on the Australian track, put in a strong performance in both races, twice crossing the line in fourth place. Davies, despite recording the fastest lap of Race 1, had to be satisfied with seventh and eighth position.

The recent Jerez testing session gave the team a chance to prepare for this weekend’s races; the positive results obtained there bode well for the upcoming event.

Davide Giugliano (Ducati Superbike Team #34)

“I enjoy racing at Aragón, it’s a great track. Last year I wasn’t doing too badly and was fighting for the third spot. This year I plan to work hard to adapt both myself and my bike as quickly as possible to the track. I consider it an advantage having the ‘Aragón wizard’ there in the garage next to me, as having such a strong teammate always spurs me on even more. I’m keen to get started, we’re coming from Phillip Island where we were strong and from the Jerez tests where we were consistently fast. So I’m extremely motivated to start work at Aragón.”

Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team #7)

“There’s no one stand-out reason for my past results at Aragon I don't think. It’s a track that I really enjoy riding, it flows really well, and I just seem to be able to get into a good rhythm very easily. Certain riders’ strengths play to different tracks and Aragón seems to work well for me but we won’t get too carried away, as there are other guys who are strong there too. Last week’s tests were positive in that we took a different approach to set-up and got a better idea as to what works and what works less well. It was a test where we gathered information, now we have to see if that can all be implemented in upcoming rounds.”

WSBK action resumes at MotorLand Aragon

Barcelona (Spain), Tuesday 8 April 2014 - The first European round of the 2014 eni FIM Superbike World Championship takes place this weekend at the MotorLand Aragon circuit. The track, located near Alcaniz in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain, has been on the calendar since 2011. The first two editions of the Aragon Round saw Max Biaggi and Marco Melandri sharing wins, whilst last year Briton Chaz Davies stole the show by taking the double.

The 27 year old Welshman, now one half of the Ducati Superbike Team duo, has showed great pace again on the track during winter testing, while teammate Giugliano was the quickest at the latest private test at the other Spanish venue on the calendar, Jerez.

Championship leader Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia Racing Team) had a season start very similar to last year’s, with one win and a second place at Phillip Island. The Frenchman leads the title race with a 10 point advantage over compatriot Loris Baz (Kawasaki Racing Team) and 13 points over new teammate Marco Melandri. For the first time ever Baz lies ahead in the standings of the other KRT rider and reigning Champion Tom Sykes who is one point behind fourth place Giugliano and tied in points with Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki), fifth.

First race winner of the season Laverty is looking forward to the second round of the season and hopes for a change in fortunes from last year when he finished with two DNFs, due to a technical problem which occurred in Race 1 and by an early crash in the following one. Despite his ankle still not being 100%, Laverty's teammate Alex Lowes hopes to post strong results on a track where he has never raced before.

After almost one week of testing between Cartagena and Jerez, the Pata Honda Team heads to Aragon with the aim of making that further step forward that would help both Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam to compete for the top 3.

Team Hero EBR is currently performing the second day of private testing at the Alcarras circuit, located only one and a half hours drive from Aragon, with both Aaron Yates and the returning Geoff May. The official squad of the American marque continues its learning curve in the championship, hoping for an improvement in performance in its second ever WSBK round. Same target for the MV Agusta RC – Yakhnich Motorsport Team, who recently completed a one day test at the Cremona circuit mainly to practice starts.

On the EVO side of the Championship, local rider David Salom (Kawasaki Racing Team) is going to try and race despite the right hand injury suffered during the first day of testing at Jerez last week. Salom’s main challenger for the race wins at Phillip Island Niccol� Canepa (Althea Racing Team Ducati) will be determined to edge out the Spaniard at his home track.

With Sylvain Barrier out due to the road accident he had three weeks ago, the BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team have selected former WSBK full timer Leon Camier to replace the injured Frenchman. After testing his conditions during a recent test at Imola, multiple WSBK race winner Michel Fabrizio (Iron Brain Grillini Kawasaki) will be on track for his season debut, as the Italian rider injured himself in Phillip Island’s official testing.

Italian manufacturer Bimota is set to make its comeback to World Superbike this weekend at Aragon. Bimota’s official WSBK team, run by Francis Batta’s Alstare outfit, will line up with two EVO-spec BB3 machines for Ayrton Badovini and Christian Iddon. Bimota counts 11 WSBK race wins, 10 of which came in the two year period 1988-1989. Furthermore, the first ever World Superbike race (1988, Donington Park) was won by Davide Tardozzi aboard a Bimota YB4 750 EI.

World Supersport

The FIM Supersport World Championship returns for the second round of the season, with Jules Cluzel (MV Agusta RC – Yakhnich Motorsport) on top of the standings ahead of Kev Coghlan (DMC-Panavto Yamaha) and Raffaele De Rosa (CIA Insurance Honda).

Kenan Sofuoglu (Mahi Racing Team India Kawasaki) and Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Supersport) are looking for redemption after leaving Australia with no points. Both riders crashed out in the early stages of the shortened five lap World Supersport race, whilst trying to pull away from the rest of the field.

Last year van der Mark had the best result of his rookie WSS season at Aragon, finishing second behind race winner Fabien Foret. On the other hand, three time World Supersport Champion Sofuoglu has never had an easy time on the Spanish track, with his top finish being a fifth place in 2012

Jack Kennedy (CIA Insurance Honda) has spent the long break recovering from the ankle injury sustained during the official test at Phillip Island. The Irishman, who rode through the pain before being forced out of the race due to a technical problem, is anxious to get back on track.

Last year’s STK600 runner-up Alessandro Nocco will make his World Supersport debut this weekend after signing a deal with the San Carlo Puccetti Racing Team. Nocco will join fellow Italian Roberto Tamburini, who started the season on a high note by scoring a top 5 finish in the opening race of the year, as well as setting the fastest lap of the race.

Team Rivamoto Honda will not attend the Aragon Round. The Russian squad is still looking for a new rider and sponsors after recently parting ways with Australia’s Bryan Staring.

Superstock 1000

Twenty six permanent riders have subscribed to be part of the 10th running of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, with a number of past riders looking to claim the ultimate prize. Add into the mix a number of new riders, coupled with a number of established regulars switching teams and the scene is set for another epic title fight.

On paper, the Barni Racing team should feature strongly once again with Leandro ‘Tati’ Mercado being joined by Czech Ondrej Jezek in a new look team. Pedercini Kawasaki should also be amongst the front runners, the Italian team retaining the services of Lorenzo Savadori, whilst adding former Supersport point scorer Balazs Nemeth (Hungary) and Frenchman Romain Lanusse to their squad.

Honda are putting their faith in the Agro-On WIL Racedays for 2014, with American rider Josh Day returning to the World Superbike paddock after a season racing in IDM. He is joined by British rider Kyle Smith, who remains with the Honda outfit after taking an emphatic victory in the STK600 race at Jerez last year. Another interesting change to proceedings concerns the EAB Team who have switched from Honda to Ducati machinery this season. Italian Fabio Massei and Dane Alex Schacht will pilot the beautifully turned out EAB 1199 Panigale machines.

Superstock 600

For nine years, the newly named FIM Europe Superstock 600 Championship has attracted riders from all over the world, and in 2014 the trend is set to continue. As in previous years the category to showcase the best up and coming talent is almost over subscribed with riders from all over the globe relishing in the opportunity to compete alongside the stars of Superbike.

There are a few recognisable names on the entry list. Belgian Gauthier Duwelz returns once again, sticking with the MTM team. He is joined for 2014 by German Julian Puffe with both riders favouring Kawasaki machinery. VFT Racing will be looking to build on their end of season success last year and retain Italian Stefano Casalotti. He will be joined by fellow Italian Christopher Gobbi.

Luca Salvadori has been fast in winter testing and lines up aboard a Kawasaki under the Team 10 LAP Racing banner. Dutchman Wayne Tessels will ride the only Suzuki in the field and could spring a surprise or two, as could Finland’s Niki Tuuli (Kallio Racing Yamaha), Mathieu Marchal (MOUSS Racing Team) and Australian Adrian Nestorovic (MVR Racing) who all return for another shot at the title.

Of all the permanent riders that will begin the fight for the overall crown, eight make the step up from the equally close and exciting European Junior Cup.

European Junior Cup

After the success of 2013, the PATA European Junior Cup powered by Honda returns as a support race to this year’s World Superbike championship, and with the added bonus of the overall champion having the privilege of testing with the PATA Honda World Supersport team the stage is set for another titanic battle between some of the hottest young prospects on two wheels.

As in previous years, 2014 will see a number of familiar faces returning to compete, whilst a host of new determined youngsters have signed up from around the globe to once again ensure that the EJC has a truly international flavour.

Van der Mark and Zanetti seek Spanish success

Michael van der Mark and his Pata Honda World Supersport team-mate Lorenzo Zanetti head to Spain this weekend (11-13 April) for round two of the 2014 World Supersport championship at Motorland Aragon near Alcaniz.

The Honda CBR600RR-mounted duo, who finished in second and sixth positions respectively at Aragon last year, are in search of their first points of the season after a difficult start in round one at Phillip Island in Australia at the end of February.

The first-round race there was shortened to just five laps after oil was dropped on the circuit in the first start and in his eagerness to open an early gap on his rivals from a front row start van der Mark crashed out of the race.

Zanetti was unable to make the start after injuring the middle finger on his left-hand in a qualifying crash. However, the Italian is hopeful that the injury will not limit his undoubted podium potential at Aragon this weekend.

Michael van der Mark

I was able to do a three-hour test at Assen recently, which is near the team’s headquarters, so at least I could get some feeling with the bike again after Australia. I’ll need to get used to the CBR again on Friday at Aragon but I like the circuit and I was really happy to get on the podium there last season. We also had a good test last November when the bike felt really good and I could make some good lap times. After Australia, it’s important that I score a lot of points this weekend so I will be focused on the job and will do my best to get the result that we need.

Lorenzo Zanetti

I was able to test my finger last week on a friend's bike at the Italian championship test at Imola. I did two sessions and maybe 20 laps. It was a little painful and there was some swelling, but I think with adrenalin and maybe some pain-killers in Aragon, I will be able to try. I can't wait to get back on the bike after such a long break since Phillip Island and it's important to check the condition of the finger because we have an intense programme of races now. But I like the Aragon circuit and, to get my season started, I want to be fighting for the podium immediately.

Pieter Breddels

Michael was able to have a short, three-hour test at Assen since Australia but he did some good lap times. He had a great result at Aragon last year, despite a technical problem on his CBR, so we know that the track suits his riding style and the bike. Lorenzo is confident but he left Australia with a big hole in his finger, so we’ll see how his fitness is on Friday. If all is OK, he should be able to fight in the top four, which is where he belongs.



Noale, 9 April 2014 - After the opening round in Phillip Island, by now more than a month ago, the factory derivative bikes start their engines once again. World Superbike embarks on Europe, specifically on the Spanish Aragon circuit where the hunt for the title will resume for the Aprilia Racing Team.

With one win and two podiums, as well as the top spot in both world championships, the Australian round confirmed just how competitive the team with the Italian 4 cylinder is. Guintoli, winner in Australia, leads the rider championship and Aprilia is at the top of the Manufacturer standings. Aragon is notoriously a track that is well suited to the characteristics of the RSV4 so it is the best possible testing ground to ensure the solidity of the Italian package.

The spotlight is obviously on the provisional championship leader, Sylvain Guintoli. The French rider, a key player last season despite a debilitating injury to his right shoulder, is back to perfect fitness and can count on a feeling with his number 50 RSV4 that has by now reached perfection. In the recent test sessions at Jerez Sylvain was also able to test a few developments with positive results that will provide him with the tools to take a further step forward.

For Marco Melandri Aragon is the perfect opportunity to shake up the Championship. After an opening round with ups and downs at Phillip Island which in any case resulted in an encouraging second place for his rookie race on the Aprilia RSV4, Marco has continued working with his team to fine tune his feeling on the bike in this first year on it, working very hard during the test sessions last week at Jerez. The good pace he demonstrated and the satisfaction expressed by the rider from Ravenna are encouraging, especially on a track like this one where he has always done very well.

Sylvain Guintoli: "I 've had a long time to enjoy the great times from Australia but since Jerez test it's back to work and 100% commitment for Aragon. The new swingarm tested in Jerez has given me better traction and the Aprilia Racing Team has worked very hard to improve our electronic strategies since Oz. I can't wait to be back on track".

Marco Melandri: "Aragon is a fantastic track and I'm sure we will see two very exciting races. We will apply all the improvements we found during the recent tests at Jerez and I will be racing with a strong desire to win. During the long break I worked hard to be at 100% even in terms of fitness. Now I feel like I'm in shape and truly motivated. We are headed to Aragon fully aware that it is the first European round that starts the real Championship every year".

Superstock 600 - San Carlo Team Italia ready to kick off the 2014 European championship in Aragon

Marco Faccani and Andrea Tucci debut on the Spanish track

With a sensational 2013 in the archives (Franco Morbidelli and Alessandro Nocco took first and second position in the final rankings respectively), San Carlo Team Italia will participate in the first round of the European Superstock 600 championship in the Motorland Aragon circuit, in Alcañiz.

The team confirmed its partnership with Kawasaki, and will field two competitive Ninja ZX-6R prepared by team Puccetti to defend the national colors with Marco Faccani (the revelation of 2013 in the CIV Supersport category) and Andrea Tucci (reigning champion of the CIV Superstock 600), both of which shone in the pre-season tests in Alcañiz, Imola and Mugello.

Faccani and Tucci are debuting on the international stage, and will start in Aragon their development path under the guidance of Cristiano Migliorati, who was confirmed as Sports Director for San Carlo Team Italia STK600.

For the season opener, San Carlo Team Italia will ride bereaved to remember Claudio Porrozzi, the architect behind the revamping of all federal activities among production-based bikes as the head of Racing Division for FMI from 2000 to 2010. Porrozzi was a key figure in international motorcycle racing, and a beacon in the communication sector. San Carlo Team Italia and FMI want to express their deepest condolences to his family in such a difficult time.

Cristiano Migliorati (Sports Director - San Carlo Team Italia STK600)

Supersport World Championship

Besides the Superstock 600 season opener, the Aragon round will host the second race of the Supersport World Championship. San Carlo Puccetti Racing is eager to confirm the competitiveness shown in February in Phillip Island, where Roberto Tamburini was fifth on the finish line, posting also the fastest lap of the race after qualifying third. The team will entrust Alessandro Nocco (runner-up in the Stock 600 championship last year) with a second Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R. The rider was fast right away on the bike in the recent tests in Imola. A sign of respect to Doriano Romboni, the team's mourned Sports Director in 2012-2013, Tamburini and Nocco will race with number 5 and 10 respectively, both of which "Rambo" brought to the top of the podium in the 250 World Championship as a racer.

Rivamoto To Miss Aragon WSS Race

With less than a week to go until the World Supersport European season begins it is with regret that Rivamoto Honda announce that they will not be present on the grid in Spain.

Konstantin Zotov – Rivamoto Russian Director: “We have been working hard, trying to secure the necessary budget to continue but at this moment we reluctantly have to say that we do not have the budget to continue and therefore are unable to replace Bryan at MotorLand Aragon this coming weekend. We are going to continue to speak to our existing partners and explore every avenue to ensure that we are back on track at the earliest opportunity.”

The team have already been contacted by a number of riders and will use the coming weeks to evaluate all possibilities.

The team are fully prepared for the season and have two Honda CBR600cc machines ready to race. They ask that any interested rider or company with an interest of joining their 2014 campaign gets in touch as soon as possible using the following email address: zotov@rivamoto.com
