Canet opens Grand Prix win account at Jerez

Estrella Galicia 0,0 takes victory in exciting race decided on final corner. Enea Bastianini continues his progression and finishes eighth.

Aron Canet took his very first win in the Moto3 World Championship at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Spaniard, who had been the fastest rider in the warm up, escaped at the start in a lead group with Jorge Martin and Romano Fenati, but the battle soon involved six riders in the quest for podium positions. Despite a run-off midway through the race, Canet managed not to lose contact with the group; when the last lap came around, the Spaniard left his move for the last corner, passing Fenati and Joan Mir to take victory.

Enea Bastianini was up into the Top 10 off the start, and pushed to keep tough with the leaders in the trailing group. The Italian crossed the line in eighth place at the end of the race.

That moment came for Aron today, so it has been a perfect weekend. It was a difficult weekend and although the warmup went better, we knew that it would be difficult to fight back in the race. We did well and we managed to get into the front group, but after the fifth lap the performance of the front tyre dropped a lot. Nevertheless, we are happy because we kept up there and finished a second and a half off the winner, with my best result at this circuit -which I always find very difficult.”

"I think this victory is the best gift I could give my mother on a day like today. It was a very tough race; At first I tried to get into the top positions and try to break up the group, but the fight was very intense and that made it very difficult. After that, contact with Darryn Binder made me lose several positions. Later on, when the race slowed down, I didn’t find it so difficult to overtake and I thought about attacking at the end of the race, sticking in fourth or third -which was perfect for the last corner. This circuit used to be one I struggled at, but after this race I think I can say that I like it. Apart from that, on a special day like today we are missing our team manager, Jordi Arquer, who we hope will be back soon."

Mahindra Takes a Step to Rack up First Points

Jerez de la Frontera, 07 May 2017: Mahindra Racing’s hopes of regaining momentum in the return to Europe came to fruition in Jerez today, with official team rider Albert Arenas picking up his and the team’s first points of the year with a hard-fought 14th place.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, who had qualified an equal career-best 13th, battled hard with more experienced riders for the lead of a pursuit group locked in a bitter fight for 12th place. Arenas had placed third in morning warm-up and was confident for the race. Trapped by his starting position in the chase pack, he was less than a second off the lead, after 23 laps of hard racing around the iconic 4.423-km circuit in the south of Spain.

Team-mate Lorenzo Dalla Porta was exchanging places with his team-mate for the first half of the race, but lost speed as the tyres wore down during the 101.8-km race. He finished 19th, losing 18th place to Jakub Kornfeil on the Peugeot-badged Mahindra in the closing stages.

Mahindra, the only Indian constructor in the world championship, had a disappointing time in the first three races, after recording its best-ever season in 2016, with three race wins. The three flyaway races brought scant rewards to the new and less experienced rider line-up, after a major upgrade to the MGP3O Moto3 machine.

The Italy-based racing bike manufacturer and the Spanish official Aspar team remained confident, however, that a return to more familiar tracks in Europe would help the riders to achieve the full potential of the single-cylinder 250cc racing machine.

Today’s race brought a first win to Spanish Honda rider Aron Canet.

Jerez marked the start of the high-intensity European season. The next race is the French GP at Le Mans in a fortnight.

“After a really good Warm Up we were confident of having a good race, aiming to stay in the first group. It was really difficult because we haven’t done this yet but we still tried. In the first lap the group was broken and we just tried to keep our pace to stay at the head of the second group. It was good to gain these first points for me and for Mahindra, now it’s important to continue in this way. But it’s a shame, I had an incident in the last corner with another rider when I was 12th.”

Gardner Close To Spanish GP Top 20 After Heroic Return Ride

The first European Moto2 race of the season, the Spanish GP at Jerez, saw Tech 3 Yamaha's Remy Gardner return to racing action after the Argentine GP less than a month ago that saw him suffer a broken leg through no fault of his own.

With screws and a plate still in place in his leg, the sheer determination to try to ride, let alone race was impressive with many observers saying that today's 25 lap race around the twisty, undulating Andalucian circuit was heroic with Remy's 22nd position at the flag providing a huge boost ahead of the French GP at historic Le Mans in a fortnight.

Easing himself back in gently, a wet Free Practice 1 on Friday was not what was needed, Remy completing only a few laps before improving rapidly in Free Practice 2 which was held in dryer conditions.

Further improvements in FP3 on Saturday saw Gardner only 1.5s from the top time ahead of qualifying which eventually saw the #87 make it on to the grid in a respectable 28th.

The target for the race was to simply finish, 25 laps at Jerez is a tall order for a fully fit rider, let alone one that was operated on a matter of weeks ago. Keeping out of trouble in the early laps, Gardner rode through the discomfort, battling hard with several riders to achieve a remarkable result just outside of the top twenty at the flag, his first GP finish of the season.

With two weeks until the next round in France, Remy will continue to train hard and heads to Le Mans happy that his season has finally started!

Remy Gardner - 22nd: "That was a tough race but the main thing is that we finished it and nobody took me out. After about five laps my ankle started to get really sore and to make things worse I had an allergy in my eye which started playing up. I couldn't ride how I wanted to all weekend but I gave it my all and have a couple of weeks until we go to Le Mans so hopefully I will be fitter and stronger there. Big thanks to everyone who has been sending me positive messages on social media and of course to my Tech3 Moto2 Team."

Mir climbs the Jerez podium and maintains Moto3 Championship lead

The Mallorcan talent claimed third after a dramatic Gran Premio de España, 23 breath-taking laps decided in the final corner. Livio Loi remained trapped behind, chasing points.

At 11 o'clock, the lights at Jerez de la Frontera went out, starting at the fourth race of the 2017 season. Joan Mir immediately gained two positions while Loi was held back by traffic. Immediately in the first meters of the first lap, the championship leader made a big break through three opponents at Turn 6, while behind him there was contact between Suzuki and Antonelli.

Followed by KTM teammates Ramirez and Binder, and Mir was looking safe in fourth place. The fight was tight: there were just 12 riders within 1.7 seconds. Livio Loi occupied 20th position behind Kornfeil.

There were four in command of the show but on the 10th lap Binder slipped at the last bend, reappearing in 23rd position. In the middle of the race, three Spanish riders alternated leading their home GP. Joan Mir was second with his fellows Ramirez and Canet close, as Fenati was lurking. Meanwhile Loi also leaps to Toba and walks in the 16th place, one step from the points area.

Three laps from the end, Fenati returned to the front and tried to break away. Mir followed him and tried to break away from the likes of Canet and Ramirez: these four riders were the undisputed protagonists of this thrilling Grand Prix.

The last lap was a spectacular one: this came after a big moment, Mir using all of his skill to remain on his Honda. Mir crossed the line in third place behind Canet and Fenati, maintaining his leadership of the Moto3 by 9 points over the Italian.

#36 Joan MIR - 3rd:

"I'm satisfied, but not entirely happy. We kept a good strategy for the race, focused at all times. I knew I could handle it better. In the last lap I wanted to open a small gap in T3 and T4, but I almost fell down and Romano [Fenati] passed me. In the last curve I braked hard to pass him but I did not notice Canet inside: I did not have a rear view mirror to know to close the door! [Laughs]. The third position is still a positive result and brings valuable points to us."

#11 Livio LOI - 16th:

"It was a very difficult race, perhaps the hardest race in my career. Even today in the race I suffered some of the previous problems that had come back in the past few days. I was almost falling in every corner, the race seemed to never end. We will now look at Le Mans' data: we must look ahead."


The fourth race of the 2017 Moto3 World Championship at ‘Circuito de Jerez’ was not as rewarding as expected for Team Del Conca Gresini Moto3: after an incredible start from pole position, Jorge Martin was unable to challenge at the front of the field for honours like he did in the first three encounters of the season. The performance of the 19-year-old from Madrid was affected by a small technical issue, which did not allow him to be aggressive under braking; Martin, in fact, was able to complete only one overtaking manoeuvre throughout the whole race and was ninth at the flag. After four races completed in the season, Martin is now third in the championship standings with a 14-point gap from the top.

Fabio Di Giannantonio’s race, on the other hand, had a very different trend. Following a difficult qualifying session, the young Italian got a great launch from 11th place on the grip and managed to display a great race pace on board his NSF250RW machine. ‘Diggia’ spent almost the entirety of the race at the back of the group fighting for honours, but after getting the better of Migno he made a mistake at turn one on the final lap, which cost him the fight for the podium positions. Fabio is still sixth in the title race, now with 35 points.

The next race of the Moto3 World Championship will take place at France’s Le Mans circuit in a fortnight’s time.


“It was a good race, especially after a disappointing qualifying session. I gave 100%, even a bit more as we’re still a bit behind in terms of bike setup, which means that we still have some work to do. I’m happy because I was able to stay with the leaders for the majority of the race. I was right there to battle for the podium in the end, but I made a mistake and that was it.”

9th - JORGE MARTIN #88

“The strategy was to save the tyres for the last part of the race but, to be honest, I was never able to ride at my best. I wasn’t feeling comfortable on the bike, up to the point that I was able to make a pass only towards the end of the race, and that wasn’t an easy one either! We need to accept this result and move forward: we had a problem with the brake which affected my performance on both corner entry and exit, while the tyres wore off pretty fast. This is racing, though: we were on top yesterday, while today just ninth. We will make up for it in Le Mans!”

Resolute Tech3 duo persevere to finish tricky Spanish GP

Tech3 Racing Team rider Remy Gardner pushed through the pain to complete his first Moto2 race of the year as he bravely finished the challenging round four fight in 22nd despite his heavily injured ankle. The young Australian began from the head of the tenth row of the grid and progressed throughout the race before he met the chequered flag, as he showed admirable determination. Meanwhile, Xavi Vierge’s hopes of a strong finish in front of his home fans were cruelly cut short after he was involved in a multi-rider collision at turn six on the second lap whilst dicing near the front of the field. After the incident, the Spanish rider returned to the pits and rejoined the race but he was eventually forced to retire on the 16th lap.

Remy Gardner

Position: 22nd - Championship: Not Classified

“The GP today was certainly difficult but I gave my absolute all and I am happy to have completed the whole distance and not just half a lap, like the last times. It was very hot and after about seven or eight laps, it started to get really painful for me to change direction due to my injury. Also, my arms got tired because I had to use more of my upper body to compensate. In addition, my eyes began to swell up and close during the race for some reason, so it was definitely a tough one! Next week will just be recuperation, but for now, I just want to move on and focus on Le Mans. There, I hope to be in better shape and I’m sure we can have a more positive time."

Xavi Vierge

Position: DNF - Championship: 10th - Points: 25

“I am pleased with how the weekend went but I can’t hide my disappointed about today’s result. This track was tricky for the team and me, but in every session, I did everything that I could to improve. I qualified well, and it was my best of the year, and I felt confident for the GP because my rhythm was positive. I made a really good start and reached 3rd at the second corner. Then, I pushed to try and stay with the leading bikes, but unfortunately, another rider crashed and collided with me. This is a big shame because I could have achieved a good result for the team, and most importantly, I could have collected a lot of points. Nevertheless, I must stay positive and I will return stronger so that the next GP will be more successful."

Hervé Poncharal - Team Manager

“I am disappointed with what happened today in the Moto2 race for us. Xavi has done a great job all season and throughout the weekend here and it was a very important event for him in front of his home crowd. He had another incredible start as he was quickly up to third. We knew that he could run a good pace and we were confident about a top five finish, or possibly even a podium. This is what Xavi was doing, but unfortunately, and we have seen this happen before, he was taken out in the early stages. We are very disappointed because everything was ready for a strong result and we were there to complete the GP. In addition, we could see that once he picked up the bike and re-joined the race, his pace was good enough to be in the top five, despite the bike being a bit bent, but then he was forced to retire. It’s a real pity because we could have kept the fifth position in the championship but we have to accept that this kind of thing happens. Furthermore, we are still yet to end a Grand Prix with both guys, and every incident and DNF has happened because of someone else and not because of our riders. On the other side of the garage, I have to congratulate Remy Gardner for his never give up attitude and his strong desire to push even though he was in a lot of pain. We told him that it was fine if he chose to not race due to his injury. Yet, he fought until the end and this shows his pure grit. Everyone hopes that he will be closer to full fitness at Le Mans, where he can hopefully score his first points of the year. Xavi is very angry and hungry for success and the incident has doubled his determination. He is physically ok so let's move on to Le Mans, the Tech3 team’s home Grand Prix, where hopefully we will have a bit more luck and some more speed."

Top-10 for Guevara in the race at Jerez, Rodrigo collects Championship points


Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Today the circuit of Jerez de la Frontera was the venue of the fourth race of the 2017 Moto3 World Championship.

The day kicked off on a high note for Guevara, who was very competitive in the warm-up: the Spaniard grabbed the fourth time, only 0.315 seconds off the fastest guy on track. In the race, Juanfran joined the leading group since the beginning, fighting for the front spots. The Spaniard crossed the finishing line with a two-second gap from the winner, achieving a well-deserved tenth placement.

After some final checks in the warm-up, Gabriel Rodrigo had a solid beginning in the race. With a good start from the sixth row, Gabriel approached the Top-10 promptly. In the second part of the race, the Argentinian couldn’t hold his position because of some issues with the front of the bike. However, Rodrigo managed to cross the finishing line thirteenth, therefore obtaining three points for the General Classification.

#58 Juanfran Guevara: 10th [RACE]

“It was a positive day. We took advantage of the time at disposal in the warm-up, in order to complete a 11-lap long run. I was on my own and we had a solid pace, which gave us confidence for later on. On top of that, we could confirm that the setting was quite alright, too. It was a long race, we tried to stay safe in the first few laps in order to save some rubber for the end. We reached the front group soon enough and we got to fight for the Top-5. During the last few laps I had some small problems with the rear of the bike, we struggled a bit and we lost some positions. In the end we finished tenth, generally speaking I’m satisfied: considering the way the weekend had started off, it was looking like we would have been further off. Today we put in a very consistent pace and that was the key. We leave Jerez with a good feeling and now we look forwards to the next GP. I’d like to thank the team for the work they’ve done. This is the second race we finish in the front group and very close to the winner, I believe we are headed in the right direction.”

#19 Gabriel Rodrigo: 13th [RACE]

“I’m a bit disappointed, because we knew that here we could be competitive, after the IRTA test. The weekend was a bit strange, but in the race I was strong in the beginning and I reached the front group. In other Grand Prix events I had pushed hard in the beginning and, afterwards, the end of the race had been tricky, so today I decided to hold my position and be less aggressive, to save energy and tyres. However, from halfway through the race I started having some problems with the front of the bike, whereas normally I struggle with the rear tyre. We have to check the data, it’s a shame that it happened in the end. The good thing is that we could finish another race, grab some points and, furthermore, we were competitive during a while. Now we’ll have a look at what was going on and try to find the issue: if we can fix it, I’m sure we’ll manage to be in the front also during the last laps and then we can be where we deserve. We’ll work to solve the problems we had here and in Le Mans we’ll fight for a better result.”

Márquez claims maiden Moto2 victory in home race in Spain

Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS rider Álex Márquez claimed his maiden Moto2 Grand Prix victory with a dominant performance in his home race at Jerez today.

Márquez’s emotional victory came in his 39th Moto2 race start and triggered joyous celebrations. The 21-year-old Spaniard dedicated his Mother’s Day triumph to his mother Roser.

Márquez started the Spanish GP from pole position and set a fast early pace with teammate Franco Morbidelli a constant presence in second place.

But Morbidelli’s bid for a fourth consecutive win this season ended when he crashed on lap nine leaving Márquez to control the front-running to the chequered flag.

On a hot and sunny day in southern Spain Márquez finished 3.4s ahead of Pecco Bagnaia in second place.

World Championship leader Morbidelli scored zero points with his dramatic early exit when he lost the front-end at turn nine.

Just one lap earlier Morbidelli had taken the lead from Márquez when the Spaniard ran wide at turn five. But it was a brief appearance up front with Morbidelli’s shock early exit coming in full view of the closely following Márquez

Despite the DNF Morbidelli retains the lead in the standings with 75 points thanks to his three consecutive wins in the opening races of the season.

In advance of the next race at Le Mans Morbidelli is 11 points ahead of Tom Lüthi with Márquez fourth on 49 points.

Álex Márquez: 1st

“This is unbelievable, I could not have imagined a victory like this in front of my home fans. I want to dedicate this win to my mum on Mother’s Day. It was a long wait for three years to catch a victory and winning in Jerez is a dream come true. It was a difficult race in hot conditions and when I saw Franco crash I knew how easy it was to make mistake. I could not hold my maximum pace because I was on the limit with the front grip so just controlled the gap to the riders behind. I want to thank everyone in the team and all those who support me in Spain.”

Franco Morbidelli: DNF

“I made a mistake and lost the front-end going into turn nine, I’m sorry for this but it was my fault. I did not have the pace of Álex; I tried to go ahead out front but then crashed. I’m OK and still leading the points and will now focus on the next race in Le Mans.”

“It is a special day for the team when a rider wins his first race, this is something no one can take away. Álex was in fantastic form all weekend so he deserved this victory. It is disappointing that Franco did not finish as we had the chance of 1-2 result but racing is like this. But today we showed that both of our riders are capable of winning and Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS maintained its 100% winning record for the season so far.”


The riders of the Sky Racing Team VR46 are protagonists in the leading group and they closed the race respectively in sixth and seventh place.

Jerez de la Frontera (Spain), May 7th, 2017 - After a race in the leading group, Andrea Migno and Nicolò Bulega achieved a sixth and seventh positions for the Sky Racing Team VR46 at the Spanish GP at Jerez.

Andrea, who started from the eighth place on the grid, after a difficult first part of the race, recovered the gap with the strongest guys. He closed in sixth place and thanks to the points won today is seventh in the overall standings (35 points). Nicolò, in second row, struggled to impose his rhythm and is seventh under the checkered flag (10th place in the Championship, 22 points).

It was not an easy race, we were in the Top group, but in the last laps we have missed something to be aggressive in overtaking. We have to continue to work with KTM to reduce the gap in the upcoming races. Overall, I'm happy with the job done by Andrea and Nicolò, they gave their 100%.

Andrea Migno

Jerez has always been a difficult track for me, so overall the weekend balance is positive. I really enjoyed the race, but I struggled to keep pace in the last laps. We have to continue to work in this direction.

Nicolo Bulega

It was harder than I expected: it was not a good start and I struggled to find the pace with the full tank. After mid race, the things started to get better, but due to the overtakings I could not impose my rhythm.

Bo Bendsneyder fights back for 5 points at Jerez

Dutch rider finishes 11th at the Red Bull Spanish Grand Prix, having started 24th on the grid. Niccolo Antonelli suffers a crash on Lap 1, remounting to place 22nd.

05/07/2017 - Jerez Circuit, Spain

The Red Bull KTM Ajo team completed a demanding weekend at the Jerez Circuit on Sunday. In the fourth Moto3 race of the year, Bo Bendsneyder managed to fight back from low down on the grid, placing eleventh and taking his first points of the season. Teammate Niccolo Antonelli, meanwhile, crashed on Lap 1, although he would take the chequered flag 22nd after rejoining the race.

Bendsneyder racked up his first five points in the Moto3 World Championship this season, thanks to a spirited fightback through the field. The Dutchman, who started from 24th, began the race well and was part of a large second group battling for 11th place. Bendsneyder took a step forward from the practice sessions at Jerez, and thanks to his running the same pace as the top riders, he was able to progressively gain positions to finish the 23 laps at the front of his group.

For Antonelli, the day was hit by misfortune. After a good qualifying session on Saturday had put him sixth on the grid, he had been optimistic about his hopes for the race. Following a good start in which he moved into fourth, the Italian suffered a crash at Turn 6 of the opening lap. Antonelli could not avoid contact with another rider after going slightly wide on the previous corner, and was sent to the ground. He remounted his KTM, however, and completed the race in 22nd position.

After the fourth round of the season, Antonelli is in 15th position in the overall standings with 11 points. Bendsneyder is 22nd, with 5 points. The next round of the Moto3 World Championship will be held at Le Mans, France, from May 19th-21st. Beforehand, the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team will test this Tuesday at Jerez.

"I'm happy that after some difficult initial races, Bo [Bendsneyder] has taken a step forward today. He has done a good job regaining his best feeling, and hopefully he keeps going in this way and maintains this confidence to reach our goal of being at the top. It has been an unfortunate day for Niccolo [Antonelli], as his race almost ended on the first lap. He made a small mistake at Turn 6, but these things happen. We will continue working this Tuesday during the test to improve and get a good result at the next round."


"The start went well and the first corner wasn’t bad. I went into the corner 6 a little open, there was little space there and another rider made a mistake ahead of me. I tried to pick the bike up and avoid the impact, but I crashed. We were able to continue and finish the race, but it was not the result we wanted here. Tuesday's test is going to be very important, we will work to improve our performance and be well prepared for the next race."


"After the way practice and qualifying went this weekend, I reacted today. In addition, we knew we had done some very good tests here and we knew what we could do at this circuit. The results from the first two days were a little far off what we had done in the test. Yesterday we discussed it with the team and with Aki [Ajo], agreeing that we were not where we should be. But today we took a big step forward and that gives me a lot of confidence. I’m happy with 11th place and I want to thank the team for all their work; this result is for them. We had worked very hard for three races and we hadn’t been able to score points, so I want to thank the team very much."

Gran Premio de España: Race

Second in the race and in the Championship. An amazing Romano Fenati plays and has fun in the group ahead until the end and passed the highest step of the podium just at the last corner to Canet, the Spanish rider beaten in Texas. If the American race was not enough to confirm it, the rider from Ascoli expressed something important today: he is the Italian rider in the best physical and mental condition and without thinking about the Championship title (it's too early at the moment) he's the only one able to "bother" the Spanish riders. Jules Danilo started too behind on the grid to stay among the protagonists of the race but recovered 13 positions and crossed the finishing line twelfth. If only he hadn't wrong the qualifying yesterday, the French rider would have been in the group ahead. Returned.

Romano Fenati: "At the beginning of the race I tried to go ahead and get a gap with the other riders but the rhythm was too fast and it was not possible. I am happy, this second place is important for me, for my team and for the Championship. It was a great fight, full of overtakes and I had a lot of fun. I thank my team as we worked well and know we stay focused on Le Mans. We need to continue to work well as we did until now".

Jules Danilo: "I am happy for this race! The feeling with the bike was good, the only mistake of the weekend was to have done a mistake in the qualifying. Starting from the 25th position on the grid was not easy, but I started well and, in the first two laps, I tried to overtake most of the riders. The rhythm ahead was really fast and I couldn't stay with the front group but we are happy of the race and of the feeling with the bike".


Jorge Navarro has put together a positive race at ‘Circuito de Jerez’ as he finished in the points for the third consecutive Grand Prix after Argentina and Texas. It was not an encounter for the Federal Oil Team Gresini rider, especially due to his starting position (21st).

In front of his home crowd, the 21-year-old rookie from Spain was consistently fast in the first half of the race and that helped him moving into the top-10. As the race progressed, however, Navarro lost a bit of feeling with his Kalex Honda machine and had some moments which could have led to an early end to the race. Jorge eventually took his so-far best result in the middleweight class, a 12th place at the chequered flag – as well as three precious points to build on.

The next race of the Moto2 World Championship will take place in two weekend at the Le Mans Circuit in France, following a two-day private test a MotorLand Aragón (May 10-11).


“I’m ‘half happy’ with today: on one side we were really competitive in the first half of the race and we managed to make some good passes, while in the second half I wasn’t really comfortable with the bike. My body felt good, but I nearly lost the front in four different occasions. We need to be happy with this result, though, because we were starting from 21st place on the grid and finished 12th, my so-far best result in this class. With a better qualifying we could have easily battled for the top-10. We now need to stay focused: we’ve got a test this week that will allow us to try some changes to the bike geometry, so I hope we will be even readier for Le Mans.”

Comeback cut short for McPhee in Jerez

Fantastic fight back before a fall out the points for the BTT

British Talent Team rider John McPhee had a troubled qualifying session for the Spanish GP, but the Scotsman shot up from a P25 starting position to fight his way past half the field and lead the second group.

Fighting hard with riders around him and on course for another points finish despite the tough Saturday, McPhee then suffered a lowside crash out of contention at Turn 1, retiring from the race soon after.

The Brit retains a position in the top echelons of the Championship, now in fourth, with the aim now cutting the gap and gaining a big points haul once again in Le Mans at the French GP.

John McPhee, DNF: "A difficult weekend all round and definitely one to forget. I've had more or less good pace all weekend and that was backed up in the race only being 0.2 from the fastest lap. From a mixture of bad luck and a few mistakes I didn't finish in the way we wanted. We will regroup from what we have learned and come back much stronger in Le Mans."

Red Bull KTM Ajo rider rounds off good weekend in Jerez with third position. Teammate Ricky Cardus places in the points once more, in 14th.

Red Bull KTM Ajo took their second Moto2 podium of the year at the Spanish GP, thanks to a third place for Miguel Oliveira. The Portuguese rider upped his pace throughout the course of the race to reach the rostrum in the final stretch. Ricky Cardus enjoyed another positive performance standing in for Brad Binder, finishing 14th and picking up 2 points.

Oliveira had to regain ground during the race, as on the opening laps the frontrunners broke away from him and he dropped down to seventh. In spite of the distance that separated him from the podium positions, the Portuguese rider improved his pace and began moving up the order, finally entering into the Top 3 with four laps remaining.

In Cardus’ second race with the KTM Moto2 bike, the Spaniard was again amongst the points. He started from the back of the sixth row on the grid, and gained positions throughout the 25-lap contest to join a group of three riders competing for points. In the end, with 14th place, Cardus repeated the result he had achieved in Austin.

Following this result, Oliveira remains third in the overall standings with 59 points, while the injured Brad Binder is 19th -7 points- and Ricky Cardus 23rd -4 points. The next Moto2 World Championship round will take place at Le Mans, France, between May 19th-21st.

"We are very happy with our performances in Moto2 so far. Miguel [Oliveira] is doing very well, but we also have to take into account what Brad [Binder] did at the beginning of the season in very complicated circumstances. Hopefully he will be back soon. I also want to thank Ricky [Cardus] for his hard work as a test rider last year and this year. He’s been able to score points in the two weekends that he has ridden with us, so we can’t ask for more. We still have a lot of work to do to reach our goal, but we understand that it takes time. We are very satisfied for the moment."


"After the bad start I made, finishing on the podium is a good result. We cut the gap distance from the start of the race to the end. I’m happy; we have details to improve, but we are working hard on that. After the tests we did here in November, I didn’t think that I could get onto the podium today, so we have taken great strides forward. I did not expect it, and it's a fairly critical circuit for the tyres, because it's always very hot and it's not easy to finish the race. I still lack the calmness to lead a race, but I’m sure the victory will come if we continue to work like this."


"We suffered a little more today than we did in Austin. The positive side is that, despite me having been out of the World Championship for a year, we have taken two points from both races in a really tough class. Over a single lap I can go fast, but my job here is to improve the KTM. I have some problems at the end of the races that I must work on, because this is not a team that should be finishing 14th. For me it is a dream come true to be in this project; every day I feel more comfortable with the bike and I want to thank the Red Bull KTM Ajo team for all their dedication. We don’t know if I will be riding at Le Mans, but it is a circuit that I like. I wish the best for Brad [Binder] with his recovery."


At the fourth race as a rookie in Moto2, Pecco gave to the Sky Racing Team VR46 the first podium in the new category. 25th Stefano Manzi.

Jerez de la Frontera (Spain), May 7th, 2017 - Only four races from Moto2 debut, the Sky Racing Team VR46 scored the first seasonal podium thanks to Francesco Bagnaia, who was second on the finishing line of the Spanish GP in Jerez. Pecco, a rookie in the category, was the protagonist, on his Kalex, of an incredible race with an optimal management of the rear tyre. With a good start from the second row, Bagnaia was immediately behind the winner of the race (Alex Marquez), he set his pace and he was second under the checkered flag. With today's podium, Bagnaia is now fifth in the Championship standings with 33 points, best rookie.

Positive progress for Stefano Manzi who closed in 25th position. Stefano was able to reach the guys in front of him, but a crash forced him to the end of the group.

A truly amazing achievement for the whole team! From last November, everyone has done their maximum for reducing the gap from the Top guys. Thanks to the support of every person working for the Team at the circuit and at home, we have now scored a really important result after only four races from our debut in the category on a very demanding track as Jerez. It seemed a dream, but we did it. Pecco has been incredible: he was able to manage the rear tyre in the right way. He worked hard in these months and I am very happy for him. Stefano also did a good job: he was in the second group, fighting with other riders and a small mistake forced him at the end of the group. He is growing and this is our goal.

What a great day! It was a very tough race, but beautiful. I struggled to keep the pace, I made a small mistake at turn 11 - ten laps to the end - but I was able to cross the finishing line. Being on the podium at the fourth race of my rookie season in Moto2 is a dream come true. After Austin we made a big step forward and here we were able to show our real potential. I want to thank the Sky Racing Team VR46 for all the work of these months, the VR46 Riders Academy, Kalex and of course all my family – they always supported me.

It was a pity the crash at turn 13: after the start I was able to reduce the gap with the group and I was around the 20th position. I back on track for finishing the race, but I was at the end of the group. We did a great job this weekend and I'm confident for Le Mans.

Fabulous fifth and best career result for Marini in Jerez

The fourth race of the 2017 Moto2 World Championship season commenced this midday under the Andalusian sun, which was brightly shining for the Forward Racing Team riders Luca Marini and Lorenzo Baldassarri.

With a solid start, Marini was able to keep his eleventh spot on the grid during the first lap, but soon started to work his determined way through the field. At half race distance the ambitious Italian conquered fifth place and defended his best career result after P6 in Qatar to the chequered flag, missing out on fourth by just 0.093 seconds. Marini leaves the 4.423-kilometer track in Spain with a strong seventh place in the overall standings.

On the other side of the Forward Racing Team garage Lorenzo Baldassarri had a long way starting from 19th on the grid to successively gain positions. In lap number nine he was already back in the points, improving further in order to finally finish in eleventh. After making up eight places in the highly competitive 25 lap race, the 20-year old occupies ninth in the general classification after four out of 18 races.

The World Championship now moves over to Le Mans, where the French Grand Prix will take place in just under two weeks’ time.

Luca Marini – 5th (+6.917)

“I’m very happy with our performance today, even though this was a quite demanding race. We worked really well during the entire weekend and arrived well prepared on the starting grid. I’m proud to have this kind of consistency this year, because until now I had four good races, always finishing in the Top 10 or close to it, which is very important. I was not too happy after the qualifying, because the race pace here is always very similar for all riders and it’s difficult to overtake. I think with a start from the first or second row, it would have been a different race. Anyway, for me it’s great to see that we’re just about to build a good base for the future.”

Lorenzo Baldassarri – 11th (+19.672)

“In all honesty, this weekend turned out to be a tricky one. I was lacking traction at the exit of the corners and even if we tried many different solutions, we were not able to find a perfect one. During the race itself, I still encountered this difficulty, but I intended to adapt my riding style as much as possible, which enabled me to be stronger during the final part of the race, as I also handled the tyre life in a better way. So, it wasn’t the weekend we expected, but finally I think, that we did some damage limitation and brought home the best possible result. Now we have to relax a little bit and analyze the weekend in order to be back stronger in Le Mans.”

“First of all, I need to say that it was amazing to see so many fans on track today, who welcomed our riders back in Spain for the first European round. With regards to our performance I am truly impressed how mature Luca got during the last twelve months. He came to Jerez with high expectations after the positive winter tests and was able to accomplish them, even if qualifying didn’t go exactly to plan. But I’m sure that today’s fifth position will give him another huge confidence boost and we will see him even stronger in Le Mans. Lorenzo on the other hand did a very resolute and intelligent race, especially after the inconveniences he had to face yesterday. His final placement is for sure not what we would have hoped for, but he was able to collect valuable points, which might be important at the end of the Championship. Tricky race at the Circuito de Jerez

For the pilots of Peugeot Motocycles SAXOPRINT the race was a really tough one with countless overtakings they had to fight off. Kornfeil and Pulkkinen crossed the finish line at the Gran Premio Red Bull de Espana in 18th and 26th position, respectively.

After the narrow intervals in the qualifying everyone at the Circuito de Jerez was hoping for an exciting race of the Moto3TM category. Again the sun was shining brightly providing the perfect scenery for the first showdown of the day.

Kornfeil started from the 7th row seeing him right in the middle of the starting grid again. After a few laps the riders in the front could open a gap to the riders in the back – points were quite far off already. Kornfeil had to fight very hard from the beginning trying to catch them again but couldn´t get into the points in the end. During the whole race the riders were battling for the best position making it even harder to close the gap. Until the end they were fighting between 17th and 21st place and Kornfeil crossed the finish line as 18th ultimately.

For young Patrik Pulkkinen already the race preparations were quite turbulent. His crew was working very hard until the very end to get the bike ready. Pulkkinen knew he had to push from the beginning and with his good start he gained a few positions in the first lap. As well as his team mate he had a tough job during the whole race. The many overtakings he had to fight prevented him from building a constant race pace helping some off the pilots to get away from the group. Still Pulkkinen pushed hard down to the wire and secured 26th position in the end.

Next stop for the FIM Motorcycle World Championship will be France. On the 21st May the “HJC Helmets Grand Prix de France” will kick off in Le Mans.

#84 Jakub Kornfeil (P18):

"Well it was quite a hard day for me. I knew I had to push hard from the beginning if I wanted to gain positions and I did that from start to finish. It was a very difficult race because I lost the contact to the group in front of me and after that the fights in my group started. I wanted to get faster but the battles with the other pilots were extremely hard and stopped me a bit. They are so fast on the straights and even though I tried to outbrake them or overtake them in the corners they came back immediately. I did everything to close the gap and finally I managed to. We had a lot of battles until the end of the race. I did my best but I am not really happy with the outcome. Still no points for us so all I can say is we have to keep working hard and push every day. I am looking forward to Le Mans now to do that and also to test some new things hopefully."

#4 Patrik Pulkkinen (P26):

"I think the race was okay. I am not fully satisfied but at least the race was again better than the last ones. I improved my lap time as well and I could follow some riders of the group for the whole time. That’s definitely positive but a few riders still managed to go faster than me and leave the group. I couldn´t follow them because after they got away I had some problems with going constant lap times. If I could have been more constant I think I could have stayed with them. Of course I am not happy about this but I know where I can improve. I was fighting with the other guys a lot so in the end I learned a lot today. I will take the positive from this race and will keep working on the difficulties."

Ingo Prüstel (Team Owner):

"As well as after the last races we are once again not really satisfied with our result. We were really good in the training sessions so we clearly hoped for a better outcome today. Unfortunately we gave away a better starting position in the qualifying because our plan for the last laps wasn´t working out. You could see that Jakub was fighting extremely hard during the whole race to gain as many positions as possible but in the end there wasn´t much he could do. Our whole package just isn´t completely ready to fight for points yet. During this weekend we talked to Mahindra a lot and we really hope we get some improvements for the upcoming races in Le Mans. Patrik on his side did a good job today. He improves every day and even though these are small steps he is getting better day by day. If he continues like that and closes the gap to the other riders constantly we are happy with him. I really have to thank my whole team. Again everyone was working very hard during the whole weekend to make the best out of it. I also want to say thank you to our sponsors who are always supporting us and make all this possible."

Today has been a red-letter day for the Team Platinum Bay Real Estate in the Spanish GP. In the difficult Jerez circuit our Riders have dominated the race for a lot of laps: Darryn and Marcos always together on the top of the race head to head against all the others Riders!

Unfortunately around to 3/4 of the race an unintentional contact with Fenati has put Daz out of the race. Darryn bravely has then re- joined the race, but by now the gap from the leading group was too much for allowing him to be on top again. So Marcos remained alone defending the colours of the Team in the Top 5.

Marcos has been very clever in managing the last laps, ending 4th under the flag despite his tires were in very bad condition because of the great battle he has faced in each and any lap for all the race. Marcos gained very important points for the Championship ranking!

The growth of our Riders is constant and seems really unstoppable, we are very optimists and we think that the Team Platinum Bay is on its path for facing a competitive season that will be full of great satisfaction.

Rd.04 GRAN PREMIO RED BULL DE ESPAÑA: Sunday, May 07, 2017

Podium-hopeful in the 25-lap Spanish Grand Prix, IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia rider Takaaki Nakagami was involved in a multi-bike crash in the early stages. After re-joining the race, the Japanese rider crossed the line in 21st place. Team-mate Khairul Idham Pawi was involved in another crash, and retired after a heated, and hopeful battle.

Starting the race from 8th on the grid, Nakagami patiently waited for an opportunity to overtake, by at Turn 6 on Lap 3, was suddenly hit by another rider. Although he re-joined the race immediately after the unfortunate incident and managed to finish the race, it was not the result the team had expected for this weekend. Pawi, starting from 16th, contested a thrilling battle with experienced riders and improved his positions in a steady rhythm to 9th. He unfortunately lost his front at Turn 13 on Lap 14, and retired.

Round 5 of the season, the French Grand Prix commences on May 19, with Free Practice 1 for the intermediate class set to start at 10:55 local time (GMT +2).

Takaaki Nakagami (21st, 44'07.632, +43.282)

“We have improved bike's feel in the morning’s Warm Up, and I thought the podium was within reach, but our expectation was washed away by sudden misfortune. I have no words to describe my empty feeling. After the re-start, I tried to finish the race to collect as much data as possible. Knowing that the championship is still long, we are coming back to get the best results in Le Mans.”

“Even though I crashed and retired, it was a good race to get back my confidence. From the beginning, it was very difficult to manage the tires because of the high track temperature. Many times I almost crashed, but finally, I lost the front. Thanks to my team’s great support, I was able to show a good performance today. I will achieve good results in the next race.”

“I am very disappointed with Nakagami’s crash because he was hit by another rider and it was not our rider’s fault. This weekend, we had to take time to find a good feel with his bike, which is the point we have to improve for the next race. Honda Team Asia rookie rider Kaito Toba finished 17th place in the 23 lap Spanish Grand Prix today. Team-mate Nakarin Atiratphuvapat's persistent riding took him across the finish line in 21st place.

Starting from 27th grid on Row 9, Toba battled competitors and steadily climbed up through the field. By the time he had crossed the finish line, he had gained 10 spots. Atiratphuvapat also started from far down the grid, in 30th place on Row 10. In the closing stages of the race, he caught up to the group ahead, successfully overtook them, and maintained his position until the checkered flag.

For the next race weekend, Free Practice 1 of the French GP is set to start at 9:00 am (GMT +2) local time on May 19.

Kaito Toba (17th, 41'46.405, +20.699)

“I think my race pace was good because I set consistent high 1 m47s’ in the beginning and maintained low 48s’ in the latter of the race. I am disappointed not to get any championship points because my starting position was bad. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the battle. For the next race, we will try hard from Free Practice 1 in order to get a good grid position in Qualifying.”

Nakarin Atiratphuvapat (21st, 42'03.460, +37.754)

“In the race, the bike felt better than Friday and Saturday. I had been struggling in Sector 3 so I tried to improve there during the race, and I did it. When I caught riders in my sight, I gave my best to catch and follow them. I never gave up, and finally, I battled and overtook them. Overall, it was a good race for me.”

“I am happy that both of our riders could chase and fight with their competitors in the race. Having experienced these battles, Kaito and Nakarin must have realized the importance of the starting grid position. Sixth and seventh for Suter at Jerez

Suter riders Marcel Schrötter and Dominique Aegerter rode to sixth and seventh place in the Moto2 Grand Prix at Jerez on Sunday, causing mixed emotions within Suter Racing. On one hand, expectations had been higher after Aegerter’s stunning third place in qualifying. But on the other hand, the strong overall result of two riders from two different teams confirmed once again that the Suter engineers are headed the right way with the development of the all-new Suter MMX2.

Aegerter started well from the front row of the grid and defended third place on the opening lap, but then was engaged in a fierce battle with the pursuing riders that saw him battle for fourth and fifth place until the half-way mark of the race. After that, he had to give way to two more rivals, one of them being fellow Suter rider Marcel Schrötter from Team Dynavolt Intact GP, who started from ninth position on the grid and clawed his way to sixth, his best result of the new season so far.

“We suffered due to the hot temperatures. Lap times in general weren’t very fast because we all battled with a lack of grip. In my case, the problems were bigger than for many others. I had not enough feeling for the front end and I couldn’t push any harder. I also wasn’t on top of my game with my riding”, said Aegerter honestly, who is now determined to come back stronger at the next race in France in two weeks.

Marcel Schrötter was happy with his result, especially considering the difficulties he and his team had had in testing at Jerez earlier in the year. “Sixth is a great result for us after working hard over the winter months to find the right base set-up for or new bike”, he beamed. “I was able to defend my position against experienced riders such as Dominique and Tom Lüthi, which was positive. I probably had a little too much respect in the corner where I crashed yesterday in qualifying. Otherwise, our result could have been even better.”

Schrötter’s team-mate also had a Top Ten result within reach after recovering from 20th position on the starting grid, but crashed out from eleventh place when he lost the front with ten laps to go. Federico Fuligni, new rider of Team Kiefer Racing, finished in 24th place in a steady and solid debut on his Suter MMX2.

RW Racing GP make it into the top ten again

Under scorching conditions, the team’s Axel Pons run through niggling issues during Sunday’s Moto2™ battle at southern Spain’s Circuito de Jerez to came home in tenth.

Race day for the series round four was accompanied by great weather with temperatures reached values up to 28 degrees at lunch time. Pons, who qualified for P10 on the grid, lost several positions at the start due to some grip problems but was able to fight back soon after. The Barcelona born rider made it through the top ten positions until he lost ninth place in the very last corner. Sunday’s P10 in Spain was the team’s second top ten finished since RW Racing enters the intermediate class at the end of last season.

The World Championship move over to Le Mans now for the French Grand Prix in two weeks.

#49 Axel PONS, 10th (Championship position 16th, 12 points):

“Well, this tenth is not so bad. But, we still struggle a lot with a very low grip situation since the last races. In the morning, in cooler temperatures, we are feeling really good, but as soon the conditions are getting warmer or hot like this weekend, it’s really difficult to ride the bike and let it roll with a decent speed through the corners. During today’s race, we had more or less the same grip level, with a little bit less towards the end, as the lap times dropped down which was clearly to see.”

“Overall, however, it was a hard race because I touched another rider at the beginning and then I was leading my group all the way which was physically and mentally very demanding because firstly, of the heat and the low grip situation, etc., so it was easy to make mistakes. But we managed to remain cool and to bring this top ten home. It’s quite ok but obviously, we have to look at ourselves and try to improve all this things that we didn’t perfect so far.”

Jarno JANSSEN (Team manager):

“For sure, we leave Jerez happy as we made it into the top ten again. But this weekend showed once more, that in Moto2 the guys need the commitment to stop at nothing to go further to the front. It’s so difficult and so hard with a lot of strong riders competing at such that high level. During today’s race, it looked like that we struggled to keep the pace in the beginning but overall, we were very constant over the entire race distance and therefore it brought us to P9. But then, unfortunately, we lost the battle with Yonny Hernandez in the last corner. But this is how it is and as you know everyone is racing for these positions. But overall, we are happy to score another top ten today and looking forward now to go to Le Mans.”


With Swiss Dominique Aegerter in seventh, the German Moto2™ outfit was able to consolidate themselve in the top ten but joy came very little about the weekend’s outcome; Federico Fuligni succeeded with good improvements.

Under similar hot weather conditions, Kiefer Racing and Dominique Aegerter already shone with fourth fastest during the official Jerez testing two month ago. The 26-year-old and his crew also showed up in impressive form during the previous days in practice sessions, confirmed by the front row start from the third spot on the grid. So, expectations for Sunday’s round four were correspondingly high. But due to even warmer temperatures during the race, Aegerter didn’t feel as comfortable with his package as it during the previous days. Seventh place was the only downer after an otherwise pleasant stay in southern Spain.

For the team’s newcomer and second rider for this weekend, Federico Fuligni, it took a while to get familiarized with the Suter Moto2™ machine, before he was able to set decent lap times during the race.

The championship moves over to Le Mans for the Grand Prix de France in two weeks.

#22 Federico FULIGNI, 24th:

"My start was not bad at all. But during the early stages I wasn’t able to perform at a higher level that would have been possible with the new tyres. Therefore, I lost the line to the group ahead of me. However, before the race, we, my crew chief and the Suter engineers talked about changing my seat position on the bike which, obviously, I tried to implement it. But at halfway stage of the race I got a numb feeling in the right bar. So, I couldn’t put any pressure with my right foot. It took some laps to make the best out from this situation."

"Towards the end of the race, my pace wasn’t so bad compared to other riders. This means, that I have to work on myself to get more out from the new tyres. With used tyres, I was pretty fast today. Finally, I would like to thank Kiefer Racing for this opportunity. I really learned a lot this weekend, although it was difficult to get used to the bike as well as to get along better with this track. But we were able to improve step by step and finally my pace was almost as good as some other riders."

#77 Dominique AEGERTER, 7th (Championship position 8th, 27 points):

"For today’s seventh place, there is no need for congratulations as well as there not much to say about. After this race, the disappointment prevailed, although I was really looking forward to it because of our good starting position. But the hotter temperatures didn’t play into our cards. The lap times were not so fast in general because I think that everyone was sliding a lot. In our case, however, we suffered more with this problem than expected. In corner entry, I had less feeling with the front so I couldn’t push as I wanted. Nevertheless, I wanted to defend third position, of course."

"But, I soon realized that I would have to take a high risk to do so. I also had a couple of scary moments but I could manage to stay on the bike. In addition, I didn’t ride at my best as soon as I had to except that I couldn’t stay with the front guys. Therefore, the last ten laps were a quite a pain. The positive thing is that we have gained a lot of valuable data and we can take good points from this race. My thanks to the team and to the Suter guys, but we certainly expected more after we came to here with so many experiences from the winter tests. Now, we must analyse this race very well and make a re-design for Le Mans where we want to fight for the top five again."

"Overall, Jerez was certainly a good weekend. But after second fastest on Friday and starting in third from the front row, we can’t and we are definitely not satisfied with seventh place in the race. In the end, it wasn’t more possible, the bike didn’t permit more because of the hotter temperatures on Sunday. Finally, however, we must say that the positive things prevail because we have learned a lot and therefore we can go with confidence to the next race in Le Mans. In any case, we have managed to solidify ourselves in the top ten. Nevertheless, a small downer remained because, as said, there were more possible for us today."

"On the other hand, Federico rode a solid race. It was his first time aboard this Suter bike during a Grand Prix weekend. He improved well in comparison to practice sessions and qualifying but there must come a little bit more."
