Superpole 1

Johnny Rea set an early quick lap, 1'36.054 one of the fastest laps of the weekend so far. He led the first session from Jakub Smrz and Ben Spies and Troy Corser.

Ryuichi Kiyonari looked like being knocked out, but the Honda man put in a couple of fast laps to lift himself out of the danger zone. Gregorio Lavilla looked like saving himself from being knocked out, but fast laps by Ruben Xaus and Shane Byrne pushed him out of Superpole.

Superpole 2

Johnny Rea and Ben Spies swapped the top times, Rea eventually coming out on top.

The two Aprilias looked like being knocked out, Biaggi and Nakano going out in the final few minutes to try and save face. Superpole 3

Ryuichi Kiyonari crashed early, losing the front with 9 minutes of the session left without setting a proper time.

Michel Fabrizio was the first rider into the 1'35s, taking provisional pole with a lap of 1'35.811 with 8 minutes of the session left. But Fabrizio had Ben Spies behind him. Jakub Smrz sneaked briefly into pole, before Spies crossed the line to take pole back again, with a lap of 1'35.631.

While all eyes were on the duel between Fabrizio and Spies, Jakub Smrz and Johnny Rea were messing up their plans. Smrz took pole with a lap of 1'35.435, before Johnny Rea pushed Spies down into 3rd.

With less than 3 minutes of the session left, Noriyuki Haga threw his hat into the ring. Fastest in the first section, he lost out further round the track, only managing to improve up to 5th.

As the final seconds of the session ticked away, Ben Spies headed round to begin a final attempt at reconquering pole. But Spies had misjudged the lap, crossing the line after the checkered flag had fallen, and out of time to have another shot at qualifying.

This left Jakub Smrz sitting on pole, taking the first pole of his career, as well as being the first Czech rider to score a pole position in the World Superbike series. It also saw Spies' amazing run of seven poles in a row come to an end, the Texan starting down in 3rd.

Johnny Rea ended up sandwiched between Smrz and Spies, the switch to Ohlins suspension paying off for the Ulsterman. Xerox Ducati's Michel Fabrizio took the final position on the front row, the Italian failing to improve on his first lap.

Shane Byrne had his best qualifying session for a very long time, putting the Sterilgarda Ducati into 5th place, and increasing the woes of the factory Ducati bikes. For championship leader Noriyuki Haga could only manage to set the 6th fastest time, and will start the race behind two satellite Ducatis as well as the factory machine of his team mate.

The remaining two Ten Kate Hondas of Carlos Checa and Ryuichi Kiyonari complete the second row of the grid, all three Ten Kates showing steady progress.
