2009 Misano 125cc Race Result - Last Corner Madness Gives Away Victory

Result and summary of the 125cc race at Misano:

Julian Simon took victory in the first race of the day at Misano, after a moment of typical 125 madness took Andrea Iannone and Pol Espargaro out of the race. Simon and Iannone had got away from the start, taking Simone Corsi with them at first, leaving a large group battling for 4th a couple of seconds behind. After 7 laps, the pace being set by Iannone and Simon was too much for Corsi, and the Italian dropped down through the field.

As the laps counted down, Derbi rider Pol Espargaro embarked on a charge through the field, first shaking off the group battling for 6th, then passing Nico Terol, Corsi and Sandro Cortese on his way to the front. Espargaro's charge was terrifying, setting an outright lap record as he caught Simon and Iannone, and then disposing of them almost immediately. But Iannone would stop at nothing in his quest for home glory, as the resistance he had offered to Aspar's Julian Simon all race had demonstrated, and the Italian was off to chase Espargaro.

Over the last couple of laps, Iannone and Espargaro swapped the lead, though it was clear that Espargaro was the faster of the two. Iannone would not let that stop him though, and as the Italian was not close enough through Quercia and the fast right of Curvone, he had only the final corner to go. He was always going to attempt a pass, whether it was there or not, and the pass he attempted had an entirely expected outcome: Iannone folded the front diving up the inside of Espargaro, taking the Spaniard out and robbing him of a certain win, his second in a row. An altercation in the gravel traps followed, which is likely to result in the stewards taking an interest.

Iannone's stupidity handed Julian Simon victory, and extended the Spaniard's title lead, and also allowed Nico Terol and Bradley Smith a spot on the podium.
