Julian Simon wrapped up the 2009 125cc World Championship in the best way possible: with a victory in the race in Australia. Simon took the win with a classic Phillip Island move, diving up the inside of his team mate and the only man who could take the title from him, Bradley Smith, at MG corner on the very last lap.

Simon and Smith had been part of a large group fighting a thrilling battle for much of the race, consisting of Smith and Simon, Sandro Cortese, Pol Espargaro, Simone Corsi and Nico Terol, but with 4 laps to go, the Aspar team mates edged away from the following group. Smith then pushed on, realizing that he had to beat Simon if he was to keep his title chances alive, but the Spaniard was content to sit and await his chance. That opportunity came at MG, and Simon pounced immediately. Smith was left a disappointed 2nd, while Sandro Cortese won the battle for 3rd.
