2009 Valencia MotoGP QP Result - Pole Taken With Comfortable Advantage

By David Emmett | Sat, 07/11/2009 - 14:20

Results of qualifying practice for the MotoGP class:

Casey Stoner's weekend continues as it started: By dominating almost from start to finish. The Australian took provisional pole at the start of the session, and only relinquished it once, when Jorge Lorenzo took over with 13 minutes to go. Two minutes later, Stoner was back on top, and a quarter of a second faster than anyone else on the track.

Lorenzo could not hang on to 2nd place either. Dani Pedrosa was up to speed, and edged ahead of Lorenzo with a few minutes left. Lorenzo had nothing more, and had to settle for 3rd, and last place on the front row. He did better than his team mate, however, as Valentino Rossi's unhappy relationship with Valencia continued, the Italian managing only the 4th fastest time, and sitting behind Stoner on the second row of the grid. Colin Edwards won the American Civil War, edging out Nicky Hayden, who had found some extra pace in the morning and finished the day in 6th. Ben Spies continued his improvement, finishing the day in 9th, just under half a second off his team mate for next year, Colin Edwards.

That is a good performance

That is a good performance by Spies. Excellent rate of progression. I have to say I am a skeptic at this stage about how good he will be in Motogp but this is a good first step. Very disappointing for CV and for JT in their final races. Suzuki seem t have spat the dummy big time with Caporex in 14th. Bautista must be worried.

Finally excellent superb great fanstastic Casey!!!! He is the #1 title threat to VR now next year without doubt on this form. Hope he has a healthy offseason and a strong 2010. I can't wait.

PS good riddance to the 800s.....

About what was expected of Spies

We pretty much knew he'd be there in the lower top ten, but well done anyway.

As for 2010, I think you have it backwards* - Rossi is actually the #1 title threat for Stoner, who is possibly going to be completely unstoppable for the foreseeable future (and if anyone would back this statement it would be Rossi himself; I guarantee you that his off-season comments will be pointed at Stoner being his biggest concern).

* on the 800-->1000 backflip too, there's nothing much good about it IMO unless throwing money away is one of the aims of the change.
