2010 Qatar 125cc Race Result - Breakaway Halts Four-Way Dust-Up

Nico Terol has taken victory in the first race of the 2010 Grand Prix season, after breaking away from a group scrapping for the lead with three laps to go. The Bancaja Aspar rider seemed an unlikely winner, right up until he made his break from the chasing group.

Almost from the start, a group of seven riders broke away, with Red Bull Ajo's Marc Marquez and Tuenti Racing's Efren Vazquez vying for top honors. The pair - swapping the lead almost ever lap, Vazquez passing Marquez on the straight, Marquez coming back on the brakes into Turn 1 - led a pack featuring Terol, Vazquez' teammate Pol Espargaro, Blusens' Tito Rabat, Stipa-Molenaar's Randy Krummenacher and Mitsubishi Ajo's Sandro Cortese. The fight was mainly between Marquez, Vazquez and Espargaro, the battle getting intensely physical at times, with fairings being banged and bikes being barged aside.

With three laps to go, Vazquez, Espargaro and Marquez succeeded in getting in each other's way enough to allow Terol to make a break. From that moment on, Terol's lead was never in danger, the Aspar rider coasting to victory. Behind Terol, Espargaro, Marquez and Vazquez continued their dogfight, places 2, 3 and 4 completely up in the air. Marquez looked to have it in the bag, leading into the final corner. Efren Vazquez tried a last ditch move diving underneath into Turn 16, but running just a fraction wide. Marquez started onto the straight with the merest hint of a lead, but the superior straight line speed of Vazquez' Derbi told in the end, the Tuenti Racing rider just pipping Marquez to the line for 2nd.

After a difficult start to the weekend, Bradley Smith had a tough race. The young Briton lost touch with the front group early, but fought with the following group to retain 8th. Britain's other rider, Andalucia Cajasol's Danny Webb, came home in 11th.
