The first practice session of the day, run under sunny skies and in balmy conditions, kicked up most of the usual names at the top of the timesheets. As ever, it was Tuenti Derbi's Pol Espargaro who ended the day fastest, though he had to work for it, Bancaja Aspar's Nico Terol pushing his fellow Spaniard hard for the result. The two men finished just under six hundredths of a second apart.
The difference between 1st and 2nd underscored just how big the gaps are in the rest of the field. Bradley Smith finished practice in 3rd, over six tenths behind Espargaro, while Efren Vazquez was another two tenths behind Smith. Stipa Molenaar's Randy Krummenacher built on his strong start to the season by finishing in 5th, on exactly the same time as Vazquez. Marc Marquez in 6th was the last man inside a second of Espargaro, while Jonas Folger was the last of the riders less than two seconds behind Espargaro, in 10th place.

top 2 in moto2
I think these top 2 guys maybe should be in Moto 2. They both been in 125's for a few years now. But the 2 of them have been having some good races though.
stepping stones
I think that it shouldn't be anyone's business when a rider changes classes (not saying you shouldn't think so but just the idea of a rider 'moving up'). They've become default 'feeder' classes, but I think that is just an artificial construct that has depreciated the smaller displacement classes. The age limit imposed a few years ago was sad. The 125 grid would be bigger if the 125 specialists were allowed to remain. I don't think it would diminish younger riders participation and success. It didn't stop Rossi, Capirossi or Pedrosa from winning 125 championships at a young age.
If you were a team manager
If you were a team manager and needed a rider for moto2, would you look at the 125 class where the bikes are so different and increasingly less valid as a feeder or would you look at SS600 and maybe CEV moto2 riders on very similar machines..?
Bradley Smith, who I'm happy to see nearer the top of the sheets so far this weekend, was runner up in 125s last year and for whatever reason decided to stay for the 5th consecutive year..If he wins the title for Aspar he'll get a moto2 ticket with them, same as Simon..but if he's say 4th in the standings or worse, what are his options..?
It's been said, although I don't believe it, that he wasn't offered a moto2 ride for this year..and that's in a 40 strong, brand new series as its 'feeder class' runner up. Ezpeleta has talked about reducing numbers in moto2 next year, plus there are a lot more riders around with relevant experience.
I hope I'm wrong with regard to Bradleys career prospects but I'd like to know who he is taking advice from..
Overall it doesn't bode well for 125 pilots outside the top 3 come seasons end who don't have a Spanish passport.
