2010 Mugello MotoGP Race Result: Clear Win Riders Battle For Second

Results and summary of the MotoGP race at Mugello:

Dani Pedrosa took an almost unchallenged win at Mugello, getting his usual excellent start to lead into the first corner, and controlling the race from start to finish. Pedrosa did more than just get a good start though: The Repsol Honda rider laid down a scorching pace, shattering the lap record for lap after lap, running six to seven tenths ahead of the chasing group.

That chasing group consisted of Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso, who tussled for 2nd for much of the race. Dovizioso got the best of the early laps, before being passed by the Fiat Yamaha rider, but even once Lorenzo was past, he could neither catch Pedrosa nor drop Dovizioso. Lorenzo's pace never faltered, but it was simply not fast enough. For Dovizioso, he was not quite quick enough to catch and pass Lorenzo.

The real meat of the action was the battle for 4th, with Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner, LCR Honda's Randy de Puniet and San Carlo Gresini Honda's Marco Melandri engaged in a wild and brutal scrap for most of the race. In the end, it was a brave move by Stoner on Melandri that settled it, after Melandri tried to pass Stoner but could not make it stick. Randy de Puniet, who had been leading the group as they started the final lap, lost out in braking for San Donato, and was left holding 6th.

Monster Tech 3 Yamaha's Ben Spies ended the race 7th after a strong start, but the Texan could not quite stay with the group fighting for 4th. Spies finished ahead of fellow "experienced rookie" Aleix Espargaro on the Pramac Ducati, while Melandri's Gresini teammate took 9th, and Rizla Suzuki's Loris Capirossi ended the day in 10th.

But the atmosphere at the race revolved around the one man who wasn't there. Valentino Rossi, watching the race from his hospital bed in Florence, saw a huge outpouring of well wishes from the fans and riders alike. His teammate Jorge Lorenzo held up a placard saying "Everybody can feel pain, but not everybody can be a legend" before the race, and he was joined by Marco Simoncelli and the Ducati corner, who had arranged to hold up red and white boards spelling out VALE. Lorenzo also appeared on the podium wearing a yellow #46 fan shirt, as a mark of respect for his injured Fiat Yamaha teammate.

But most of all, the empty gaps on the hillsides marked the importance of Valentino Rossi. Official attendance for the three days was 116,467, though Italian journalists thought those numbers might be inflated. That compares to 123,987 for 2009 at  Mugello. That's a significant hole to fill.

Disappointing race for the Spies fans. It's nice to see that Pedrosa held his ground and mixed up the points race a little, but Spiesus Christ jumping off the line like he did made me think we were in for some excitement. No such luck… and I'm especially curious how he managed to lose roughly 2.5 seconds in the space of I believe the final2 or 3 laps. Did he give up?

Fortunately, there was some battling between de Puniet, Stoner and Melandri (possibly the real star of the race with his 9-place improvement).

When has Mugello ever been kind to rookies?
I think Spies did fine. Did he not beat Edwards, his first and most important yardstick?

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't want to say that Spies didn't do well all things considered, just that his start was more exciting than what followed.

HRC must be mad to even consider dropping Pedrosa. He is the only one who can muscle a Honda and bring it to surprising and dominant wins. It is not the bike. Nobody else has been even close to repeating Pedrosa's performance and results, there haven't even been constant podium challengers on a RC212V.

It's all Pedrosa.

Bring Stoner in, but don't kick Mini P out.

Meh. Dovi is showing that with the Honda set up he can run ahead of Stoner this year. His results of finishing ahead of Stoner prove that. Dovi is better right now on the Honda than Stoner is on the Ducati so I wouldn't except Stoner to be going to Respol.

Some years ago it wouldn't have been an impressive performance from him but I believe he was the man of the race (along with Pedrosa). He really had an outstanding race considering also what he's riding (and RdP did very well too).

I have to say that JLo has already shown how mature he is, smart (and hopefully sincere) move the yellow t-shirt on the podium, but even smarter in staying calm and managing to think about the championship.

Honda is back, and Dani deserves the win a lot, and I think that although #99 seems in control of the situation, race by race we could see some interesting fights. It will never fill the hole but it would spice things up!

I think Ducati recognizes that their bike is a handful. This time it was Nicky's turn - and I think Stoner rode well within the bike's capabilities. Very nice to see him ride a really measured race and wait till the last lap to pass Melandri and de Puniet and pick up 4th. He knew there was no way he could have made that stick earlier in the race.

Nicky bitten by the Ducati's mystery front end troubles, and Stoner had a real moment where he ran wide, lost 2 positions and had to gather it back up. Good on him to not only finish, but make the passes he needed to on the last lap.

The Duke really looks tough to ride beyond that 4-5th place speed, squeezing more out of it seems to end in tears. It's slower on top speed, seems heavy on turn in, won't hold a line and likes to tuck the front.

Dani really put on a school today though...

Surface temperature was significantly hotter than the practice, and Reposl Honda alone managed to keep similar lap times as the practice. Both JLo and Stoner were almost half a second slower. Repsol seemed to be able to adapt to the changes in track condition better this time. Pedorsa has no high opinion about the bike, but they do not look bad. Even satellite Honda had good battle with the works Ducati today. Pedorsa’s Honda engine sounded really nice on the long straight even with new engine rule.

i think mugello gave us a taste of what the next bunch of rounds might look like. i.e. runaways

i think the championship may actually be interesting because different riders might runaway, but the racing not so much.

i'm looking forward to silverstone because it's a new track that no one has been at. who's best at adopting to something totally new. spies. but i don't think he's quite ready to dominate yet. he's still getting used to the the M1; especially under braking (his great start was ruined by running wide a few times)

stoner has done well at tracks he hasn't been too, but the duc needs a few more races to get race winning fast i think.

then we got assen which could be stoner's if ducati sorts things out by then. catalunya should go to lorenzo. sachsenring: pedrosa can run away with if he just stays healthy... then laguna where again pedrosa can do well if the bike doesn't decide to go into fuel conservation mode too early... and given nicky's resurgence on the gp10 and his laguna expertise... who knows?

so we could arrive into the summer break with a pretty damn good championship underway. lets hope this includes some racing too...

about Nicky having the front end go. He has said all week that he had to ride around the bumps on the track to keep it up on two wheels. After his TERRIBLE start off the line he was pushing hard to make up places but these things happen. It was very strange to see his reaction as soon as he stood up from the crash. He looked at the bike and waved his hands at it as almost like, I knew you were going to do that so ptthhh...ciao! I have to admit I was also a bit shocked how Ben fell off the pace so quickly after raising my blood pressure from that great start. After he ran wide and was relegated backwards 3 spots he seem to just accept the position BUT incredible ride from a rookie and being the first time seeing the track so congrats to him.

Pedrosa.....no surprise at all. Picked him first in my fantasy moto gp race. He definitely is a talent for Honda. Wow, that hurt a bit! ;-)

As for Rossi, the race didn't seem real with his abscence and if this is what we have to look forward to in the future years. Not much fun in my opionion. Moto GP needs him as we all do.

After finally finding consistent fast laps in warmup, I was predicting Stoner and Pedrosa would be right up there with Lorenzo battling for the win. Only I figured it would be Stoner finally getting things figured out to get the nod. This was clearly not the case. Not only did we not get the close race at the front I expected, but it was Pedrosa rather than Stoner to keep it together at race time.

You would think the Ducati would go well at its own test track, but that clearly wasn't the case. I'm worried as well that maybe the problem is indeed with the bike rather than Stoner's adaptation to it after Nicky's front end washout. Maybe the last three races it was just Nicky's turn to get lucky and this time Stoner managed to luckily bring it home? If this is the case, it's a disappointing outlook for the near future, as the racing is always better when Stoner's up there at the front throwing that Ducati around and keeping things interesting. The more racers and factories with a chance to win, the more fun we all have watching, and right now it's a two make series.

Wasn't part of the updates to the GP10 engine to heavy up the crank for more inertia and smoother power delivery? More crank inertia increases stability at the expense of agility. That could explain the difficulty getting it turned in, and maybe it's going to take several iterations of suspension upgrades to find the right combo that work with the new engine.

As for Spies, his performance really surprised me as well. As a newish GP rider, what we've seen in the past from him is a slow start and then a late charge towards the front as he figures things out. Yet we saw the exact opposite in this race. This is rather ominous, is it not? Even with the hard rear tire on and two of the three riders in front of him on medium, he actually lost time at the end of the race, indicating that maybe (and I hope this isn't the case) he's hit a bit of a ceiling where he's at. Hopefully this can be worked through.

crowd figures... Definetly inflated. but even those above shows that 10 k people walked out. You have to consider that many of them already arrived at a venue, hired hotel rooms or something, bought tickets. And many decided to stay even if Vale is out. For rest of the season there surely will be many drops in crowd numbers.
