2010 Aragon Moto2 Qualifying Practice Result - Tight Three-Way Battle For Pole

Andrea Iannone has secured his 5th pole position of the season, the FIMMCO Speed Up rider just sneaking ahead of Marc VDS Racing's Scott Redding in the final seconds of Moto2 qualifying at Aragon. The Italian's advantage was just four hundredths of a second, but it could have been much more if Iannone had not been forced off line by a slow rider down Aragon's blindingly fast back straight.

Redding had taken over pole a couple of minutes earlier from JIR Moto2's Alex de Angelis, the three men having fought over the pole for most of the latter part of the session. Mapfre Aspar's Julian Simon saved the honor of Spain, the session having been dominated for the most part by Italians, with Simone Corsi and Claudio Corti also featuring at the front.

Championship leader Toni Elias had a difficult qualifying session, complicated by a crash in Turn 1 with 15 minutes of the session to go. To make matters worse, Elias decided to get back into the pits as quickly as possible, which meant pushing his Gresini Moriwaki the wrong way down pit lane and back to the garage. No official word has been given yet, but the Spaniard is likely to face a penalty for what is a serious infraction of the rules, potentially endangering other riders and team personnel. Protests have already been entered by some of the other Moto2 teams - including by Iannone's FIMMCO Speed Up team boss Luca Boscoscuro - but no word has yet emerged as to what Elias' penalty will be. The Spaniard qualified in 12th, just ahead of the Scottish wildcard rider Kev Coghlan.

Great to see De Angelis and Redding performing so well after the tragic event last race. Can't possibly imagine the determination running through them right now.
