The first session of free practice at Magny Cours turned into something of an open audition for riders without a signed contract on Friday afternoon. Michel Fabrizio of the soon-to-be-defunct factory Xerox Ducati squad set the fastest time, finishing ahead of the man to be replaced by Leon Haslam at the factory BMW team, Ruben Xaus. Sterilgarda Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow ended FP1 in 3rd, fractionally ahead of Jakub Smrz.
