2011 Mugello Moto2 Race Result: Three-Way Battle Goes Down To The Wire

Results and summary of the Moto2 race at Mugello:

Marc Marquez has won his second race in a row, taking a hard-fought victory in the Moto2 race at Mugello, fighting off hard challenges from Bradley Smith and Stefan Bradl all race long.

Marquez got the drop off the line, Smith following on the Tech 3 machine, quickly putting space between them and Alex de Angelis. Stefan Bradl had got caught up at the start, but soon made up places and by the 2nd lap, had pass De Angelis and was chasing the leading pair. By lap 4, all four were together, and tightly following one another.

The discipline of the group deteriorated as the race went on, and by half way, Bradl, Marquez and Smith were swapping paint for the lead. The front four were soon joined by Andrea Iannone, the Italian once again fighting hs way forward after a terrible start. Iannone added a wildcard to the group, passing Smith, De Angelis and Bradl before dropping back having used up his tires.

With Iannone gone, De Angelis was next, eventually giving up on the pace. The podium would be settled between Marquez, Bradl and Smith, and was decided at the very end of the race. Smith dived ahead of Marquez, but not far enough to fend the Spaniard off at the next chicane. Marquez put a hard pass on Smith to take back the lead, Bradl following the Spaniard to demote the Tech 3 rider to 3rd.

With his 3rd victory of the season, Marquez has clawed back some points from Bradl in the championship. But the German's grip on the title is still very firm indeed.

More evidence today. Fantastic display by the top three, especially to shut out a couple of home town hero's behind them. I guess Iannone chewed his rubber out bridging the gap mid race.

Bradley Smith. I take my hat off to the man. I was disparaging in my comments on his chances in Moto2 pre season, but boy has he proven me wrong. Great to see him starting to bring a bit of aggression to his cool calculation, and actually put passes on the top boys.

Marquez - doing what we all expected him to do after his torrid start to the season. Still no chinks in Bradl's armour though.

We've had good races at all types of tracks. For racing I think the faster tracks are way overrated. Compare Le mans to Catalunya this year.

Great ride again by Bradley Smith and the other two, Marquez looking more and more like his 125 shelf, but special mention again to Stefan Bradl, nicks second then puts in the fastest lap of the race on his last one..nice, gonna be very hard to beat this year..

Compared to the 125 (which I felt was an absolute SNOOZE). BSmith rode a fantastic race, I thought he had a great chance for the win. Unfortunately, Bradl passed him and I think that it was nothing but a spoiler for smith, who I think had the best chance of getting past Marquez. I think that Bradl didn't have a chance of getting to Marquez in the last lap, but totally his goal to get the best he could, which was second.
