Results and summary of the World Supersport race at Magny-Cours:
Luca Scassa has taken victory in convincing fashion at Magny-Cours, winning his third race of the season and the first since the Donington round back in March. With Chaz Davies crossing the line in 6th, finishing ahead of Fabien Foret, Davies wrapped up the 2011 World Supersport title a race early, taking a 37-point lead into the final race at Portimao.
Kawasaki's Broc Parkes got the jump when the lights went out, taking off from the start and building a comfortable lead early. Behind Parkes, Luca Scassa set off in hot pursuit, with Massimo Roccoli and Chaz Davies close behind. Davies was soon up to 3rd, when Roccoli's engine let go, leaving a trail of oily smoke behind him. The Yamahas had company from Sam Lowes, the Parkalgar Honda rider making his way past Scassa and then Davies.
With Parkes gone and Lowes ahead, the pair of Yamahas were clearly under strict instructions. Scassa sat on his teammate's tail, defending against attack from behind. Now flying in formation, the Yamahas started to close back on Lowes as the Parkalgar Honda man edged closer to the leader Parkes. Once they reached the young Englishman, Scassa started to get edgy, clearly confident he had the beating of the riders ahead. The waiting was for signs of Fabien Foret, and once it became clear that Foret was not in a position to threaten Davies' championship, Scassa passed his teammate and took off to chase Lowes.
That did not take long, Scassa passing Lowes with ease on lap 17 and going on to chase Parkes. The Australian was starting to slow up dramatically, as tire wear took its toll, and two laps later Scassa was in the lead and pulling away. The Italian went on to take a comfortable victory, with Lowes passing Parkes to take 2nd on the penultimate lap.
After allowing his teammate past, Davies took the conservative route to the championship, lapping carefully and consistently, but much slower than the riders behind. He would eventually be passed by David Salom and James Ellison, but finishing ahead of Fabien Foret was more than enough to clinch the title. Davies' 6th place finish was not a reflection of the dominance he has displayed for a large part of the season, but it got the job done. Davies now heads to Portimao as the new-crowned 2011 World Supersport champion.
