Carlos Checa took advantage of the hotter conditions at Phillip Island on Tuesday to seize the initiative during the second day of the private World Superbike test in Australia. The Althea Ducati rider took nearly a second off his time to get down to something approaching race pace, after finding a slightly different front-end setup for his 1198R. Kawasaki's Tom Sykes continued to impress, ending the second day of testing just a tenth off the pace of Checa, and another tenth ahead of Aprilia's Max Biaggi, while Eugene Laverty was two tenths slower than his Aprilia teammate.
The day saw two men missing and others stuck in the pits with a range of problems. At Suzuki, John Hopkins is already on his way home to have the hand he broke in a crash yesterday examined, while teammate Leon Camier was one of the riders stuck in the pits while his team worked on the bike. Despite that, Camier still managed to improve his time by six tenths to get under the 1'34 barrier. Sylvain Guintoli was the other man missing, sidelined with the 'flu and deciding to sit out the second day in the hope of continuing on Wednesday. David Salom, meanwhile, also struggled with a painful wrist, after suffering a suspected fractured scaphoid in a crash on Monday. Australian wildcard David Johnson was held back with mechanical problems to his BMW S1000RR, and was forced to use a stock engine for most of the day.
Testing wraps up tomorrow, though only for a few days, when the full World Superbike field will resume testing ahead of the first round in less than two weeks.
