2012 Qatar MotoGP FP1 Result: Stoner Leads Lorenzo and Hayden

As expected, Casey Stoner took first blood of the 2012 MotoGP season, the Repsol Honda rider staging a late charge to set the fastest lap of the session. Stoner dislodged Jorge Lorenzo from top spot, the Factory Yamaha rider having shown a very strong pace throughout. Third fastest was Nicky Hayden, the factory Ducati man just under half a second off the pace of Stoner, an impressive showing by the American.

Ben Spies, who had led much of the session, found himself demoted to 4th by the end, the factory Yamaha rider just over a tenth quicker than the second Repsol Honda carrying Dani Pedrosa. Cal Crutchlow of the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha team was first of the satellite riders, just ahead of San Carlo Gresini's Alvaro Bautista, while Crutchlow's teammate Andrea Dovizioso ended the session in 8th. Pramac's Hector Barbera finished the session as 9th fastest, ahead of Valentino Rossi on the second factory Ducati. Rossi ended the day nearly a second behind teammate Hayden.

Randy de Puniet won the war of the CRTs, the Power Electronics Aspar rider just edging Colin Edwards on the Suter BMW. De Puniet ended the day 3.5 seconds off the time of Stoner, and a second behind the last factory prototype, the LCR Honda of Stefan Bradl.

Yes, your calendar is a week off. Unfortunately, they switched the dates a couple of weeks after we went to press. It's becoming more and more difficult to get it right. We need to find a way of informing all of our customers. Something to sort out for next year!

I now consider it a collector's item!

Mr. Emmett, perhaps you can have a link underneath the "Calendars" tab that has "Print Calendar Adjustments" and just list which month/date/round needs to be adjusted.

Could this be the year Hayden finally has all the components to be competitive again?!? I have a strong feeling he'll be fighting at the front this year.

I also still feel Spies will be fighting for the championship come season's end if he can stay healthy and have no bad luck with mechanical problems.

It's worth it to point out that Hayden put on a soft tire near the end of the session to post hist fastest time. I *believe* that most of the other front runners had used a hard tire for their session.

Based on the 1st practice session of the 1st race, when race pace of 800cc machines last year is 1 second faster?

Obviously the answer is... hell YES!

wow Barbera has 10K on Ben, no wonder he just yarded him down the straight even after a crap drive off the last corner...nice ride by Nicky, hope he can keep it up once the dust clears :)

Top moto2 is faster than most of the CRT bikes except colin and randy, with a 65 k difference in top speeds. I just checked 1999 250 to 500 as i recall at most tracks the fastest 250 would be in the top 10 of the 500s. Donington 1 sec difference in lap speed. 5-6 seconds in motogp at a fast track like Qatar. you may as well let vinales on his moto3 against elison and co. Maybe dorna will allow turbos by mid year to close the gap. Come on Dorna this is not going to be a spectacle, its NEVER going to work let them race against moto 2 first to prove their worth as they wont even finish on the podium there in there current format FFS!! create a new class equivalent to 350s or something to let them develop and add to the spectacle but as far as letting the race against factory machines unless dorna decrees they can an anchor or 50kg penalty we will not see close racing for years. two stroke 250s are faster than all the CRTs.

James Ellison with a 2:03.4 is good for 21st place in MotoGP. It's also just happens to be good enough for 21st place in FP1 of Moto2 and 27th in FP2. Sure hope James learns fast or it's going to get ugly.

Nicky set his time on the soft tyre, which won't be used for the race. Lorenzo is setting the pace so far with more improvements to come according to him and his team. Repsol is fighting the chatter. Should be a good race between Lo and Sto.

Rossi down in 10th and behind a satellite bike....damn! Slowest CRT was clocked at 178 compared to 209 for the fastest prototype. That's a HUGE difference and I question whether it should be on the grid. At least Colin and Randy are close to prototype speeds

I have no idea why someone would pay a huge amount of money to put an also ran on a joke CRT machine. Why not just use that budget to sponsor a team that might actually finish the race the same day?

I guess the question is how many people will be lapped?

After the 1st practice of the 1st race of a new formula some here are ready to declare the whole concept of CRTs a failure. Why, because the slowest ones are significantly off the pace?

A little history may cast it in a different light. KR's Protons were often 5 seconds off pole & his 2 strokes were 40 km/hr. slower. The Ilmor of Jer. McWilliams was -5 here in 2006 & the Harris WCMs were often 9 seconds off pole. Any outcry to banish them to another class?

Do the fastest lap times equate to the best racing..NO..F1 cars lap 15 sec/lap faster than MotoGP bikes; better racing??? The 500s ran 3-5 sec/lap slower than the 800s...which had more close races & passing?

I could care less if Moto2 bikes have faster laps (maybe a little). If the racing is bar-to-bar I'll be happy & if a lapper gets thrown into the mix..all the better for the show.

Carmello foretold the future without CRTs..the Casey & Dani show...without anyone else!

The difference between CRT's and the Proton/Ilmor/WCM's is that they weren't fielding 9 out of 21 of the bikes on the grid, a number of which with riders which with all due honesty don't belong in MotoGP which makes CRT look more like mere starting grid filler.

Honestly, I'd be much more optimistic about the CRT's if the riders were of more even quality. Sure, Edwards/DePuniet belong in the top class, but a number of the CRT riders are more then just one step down from the satellite riders like Bradl, Crutchlow and Dovi. Frankly there were better riders available then what some of the CRT's picked, but I can only guess they couldn't bring as much sponsor money to the deal. Lower spec equipment + lower spec riders == ugly.

Honestly, I'd be ok with a full CRT grid- but we're not there yet and the future is uncertain. Hopefully MotoGP can make the transition gracefully and without drama, but I think a lot of fans are becoming less and less optimistic the more we see.

I hope and think things will get better the second half of the year, but I'm really worried about this experiment. I'm sure Dorna will adjust the rules to assist the CRT's and make them more competitive, but with the field being so uneven that makes tinkering with the rules very dangerous and it could backfire.

Come on chaps! Pay attention. Hayden and Rossi both running 1m 59s - 1m 58s, then Nicky puts a soft tyre and you all get excited? Are you from another website?
the Ducatis are where anyone who has really been paying attention would expect them to be.

For the record, the lap record at Losail is held by a STEEL-framed Ducati 800 at 1m 55.153s. Catch up fellows!

How about lap charts for each session? 1 fast lap on soft tires usually means nothing if the race will be run on hard tires. This sort of data is better represented visually.

Something about superanuation brings me back to the 90's...

Specifically the 1990 Australian GP. Only 16 entries yet a great race. 4 riders finish within 1.5 seconds (Gardner, Rainey, C.Sarron, & K.McGee). Lappers..D.Sarron, Gentile, Valesi, Buckmaster with Schmasman & Rudroff -3!

My point..whats going on in the back of the pack has nothing to do with the front. There have always been grid-fillers & even the least talented/under-financed as long as they meet the 107% rarely impact the results..notwithstanding Casey's protestations.

Just like the dinosaurs who outlived their usefulness (meteoric impacts aside) the factory prototypes have over-evolved & are unsustainable. Bring on the new; in a few years after a few close finishes you'll wish the CRTs came 5 years sooner.

I think part of my concern is a 31 mph difference In top speed. It's massive. I question what a bone stock 1000cc sport bike could do. This is supposed to be the pinnacle of 2 wheel racing. I hope to see good racing and have nothing against the CRT idea. I just don't want to watch a guy get asspacked due to the disparity in bikes
