2012 WSBK Monza Race Two Result: A Tricky Day Ends

Riders lined up for a World Superbike race. After two warm up laps ahead of a 17-lap race, most of the riders on the starting grid were gesticulating to officials and the start was delayed as black clouds loomed in the distance.

Pole-sitter Sylvain Guintoli broke down on the subsequent warm up, as did Michel Fabrizio, and with John Hopkins missing through injury incurred on his race-one crash, this meant three riders would miss the start of the reduced 16-lap race.

What we then got was Tom Sykes running away, faster than anyone else, lap after lap. Behind his Kawasaki were, as expected, BMWs and Aprilias a significant distance ahead of the Ducatis, or as Sykes referred to them after qualifying, the snails.

With Sykes off to a certain victory, Leon Haslam and Eugene Laverty fought for second place, with Haslam winning out in that battle. As Melandri and Biaggi were swapping places, at half race distance the riders started waving to marshals on the Curva Grande. The race was instantly red flagged, Sykes, with his ten second lead, was given the win and half points were awarded for the 8-lap race.

Not the best day of World Superbikes racing at Monza.

"The Snails?" Is that any way to respect your competition? How many races has Sykes won this year now? A little early to be talking trash, me thinks.

He was commenting on the bikes' straight line speed, not the riders. The Duc's were over 20km/h down on speed on the straights.

Sykes was bringing a little levity to proceedings, having just been beaten to pole position by a bike that was only faster because of the weather. It was a joke as opposed to being disrespectful. After a weekend like that, I'll take anything that makes me smile.

Sykes was brilliant, the pace he had compared to others was unbelievable, especially in the first laps! I think he was 2-3 sec faster on the first lap.
