2012 Donington World Superbikes - Superpole results

Superpole 1 was, for the first time in a while, a dry Superpole, meaning three sessions, with 12 going through from the first one, and 8 qualifying for the last.

Marco Melandri opened with a 1'28.323 which, while beating the race lap record, was still a quarter of a second off Carlos Checa's outright lap record from last years qualifying. Even a valiant attempt by Jakub Smrz couldn't take the top spot.

In Superpole 2, Leon Haslam beat Checa's outright lap record shortly followed by Jakub Smrz only five thousandths slower. The pace was so high that Max Biaggi needed to spend his last qualifier to get into the last session and Carlos Checa missed out by .05 of a second.

In the third session, Tom Sykes blitzed the other seven riders and set an astounding 1'27.716; the fastest a Superbike has ever been round Donington. Sykes now has four poles from five races this year. The BMW riders Leon Haslam and Marco Menandri joined him in Parc Fermé.

That was fun to watch. Tom on the Kawasaki is blisteringly fast to see. If only Kawasaki could make the tyres last the race distance.

By the way, Tom's 1.27.716... How does that compare to the best dry MotoGP qualifying lap? Anyone know?

Seems MotoGP and WSB heads have had a meeting tonight at Donington. If they start strangling WSB there will be hell to pay from fans!

Any laptimes on MotoGP bikes would have been with the previous configuration of the Esses. It's really difficult to compare the two because of this.

Valentino Rossi's lap record was 1'28.116 and was beaten today.

It will be interesting to compare times at Brno, even allowing for the tire differences.

The new ZX 10 seems a very competent weapon, the engine and electronics package should be competitive in Moto GP, if used by a " professional " CRT team ( as opposed to a " We got the biggest hospitality show "............. ) in a good chassis .
