2013 Qatar Moto3 Race Result: Five-Way Battle Decided On Last Lap

Results and summary of the Moto3 race at Losail:

Luis Salom has won the 2013 Moto3 season opener at Qatar, coming out on top after a five-way battle which lasted all throughout the race.

A group of five men broke away almost from the start, Luis Salom getting the holeshot, while Alex Rins and Jonas Folger followed him into Turn 1. Maverick Vinales was soon past Folger and into 3rd, while Alex Marquez chased the group down. Within two laps, the five men had opened a gap, which the chasing group, consisting of Salom's Red Bull KTM teammate Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Arthur Sissis, and the Mahindra of Miguel Oliveira, would never close back up.

The race turned into a tense game of cat and mouse, with all but Jonas Folger taking turns in the lead. Leading would not be enough, however: just being in front of the others was not sufficient to allow anyone to make a break. It would come down to the last couple of laps.

The two young Alexes in the Estrella Galicia team - Rins and Marquez - led at the end of the penultimate lap. But the veterans - if the youngsters in Moto3 can be classified as such - were ready to pounce. At the start of the final lap, Luis Salom and Maverick Vinales shot out of the draft of the two Alexes to take over the lead, Salom ahead of Vinales. Salom was on a mission, pushing hard and just opening a tiny gap. Vinales was unable to follow, and Salom went on to take the win with clear air behind him, while Vinales was left to fend off the attentions of Alex Rins, mounting a counterattack. He managed, but only by the smallest of margins.

What a great race.

It's amazing how Alex Marquez' battle for the lead and eventual 4th place AND fastest lap by the way, whilst his brother gets a MotoGP podium on his rookie race and becomes the youngest rider on the podium in MotoGP history, gets no mentions on twitter, nor I suspect in any English language reporting. Shame.

I seem to remember a few years ago you predicting that one Alex Rins was very fast in the Spanish racing circles and will be a name to look out for. Had a decent year last year, a bit rough around the edges at the moment, but he's still right up there!
