2013 Brno Moto3 Race Result: A High-Wire Act To The End

By Mike Lewis | Sun, 25/08/2013 - 13:30

Luis Salom won a fierce, race-long battle with a group of five riders to take his fifth victory of the season and extend his championship points lead. Maverick Vinales, who has finished on the podium in every race this year, came in second. Jonas Folger took the last podium spot after a final lap battle with teammates Alex Rins (fourth) and Alex Marquez (fifth). Salom, riding with a broken heel, now leads Vinales in the championship by 14 points.

Even by Moto3 standards, the contest was tight right up to the end.  Vinales led much of the early and middle parts of the race with seven riders bunched at the front. But as the lead group condensed into five riders -- the five who eventually would finish at the front -- lead and position changes began to swap in rapid succession with every rider in the front five group except Marquez taking the lead at some point. Salom, considered one of the smartest tactical riders in Moto3, made his move late on Marquez and Rins to take the lead. And as the Estrella Galicia 0.0 teammates battled each other, both Vinales and Folger slipped by to take the final two podium spots.
