2013 Silverstone MotoGP QP Result: Records Tumble In Frantic Qualifying

Full Report and Results Below:

Marc Marquez has taken an astonishing pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The rookie championship leader put in a blistering lap in the dying stages to pip Jorge Lorenzo and smash Casey Stoner's existing pole record, set in 2011, by 1.3 seconds. Marquez's time of 2:00.691 put him a tenth ahead of Lorenzo who initially obliterated the pole record on his first flying lap. Marquez matched him immediately on his first flying lap and that would set the tone for the remainder of their duel. It was a slugfest, in which Marquez came out on top once again, demoralizing Lorenzo in the process.

After a difficult start to the day, Cal Crutchlow bounced back to finish in a gutsy third place and take the final spot on the front row while Stefan Bradl, Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi will start from the second row for tomorrow's race. Andrea Dovizioso, Alvaro Bautista and Nicky Hayden completed row three and Bradley Smith finished in tenth place ahead of top CRT rider Colin Edwards after both riders advanced from the earlier Q1 session. Aleix Espargaro didn't take part in Q2 after a nasty crash in FP4, he inherited twelfth place as a result.

Some truly impressive qualifying laps today, but I am now even more worried that MM may be going too hard. In both his really quick laps there he had big slides, and I just don't believe that he was in control on either occasion. Respect to all three on the front of the grid, they all deserve it.
I just don't want to see a really nasty accident, especially if it is "just" for qualifying.

For gods sake! That's what its all about. This are competing guys. If they can win half the race on Saturday they will. That's why we (I) watch it. There have to be losers. They are grown men (well most of them) and can choose to go for it or not. And I think MM93 have a bike control out of the ordinary. He knows what he's doing.

That was the best qualifying 15 minutes I've ever seen. Lorenzo was absolutely throwing everything on the line, and still Marquez just keeps besting him! Lorenzo is angry, this could be great tomorrow.

Espargaró is doubtful for the race, sore neck and, IIRC, heavily bruised wrist/hand (interview on Spanish TV). He's more worried about the wrist. Decision to be made tomorrow.

MM93 equals NO Fear! The fact that Marquez is a MotoGP rookie must be repeated on occasion! Jorge should be very upset. What happened to Dani? This is Marc's first year on a MotoGP RCV at each of these tracks. What will Marquez be like for 2014 after collecting all this fresh data to be used next year? MM93 is still learning... he rides the bike very loose unlike Jorge or even Dani's 250 style! Marc lets the bike move around underneath him a lot (for feel, I'd guess) the same way Casey would let the Ducati move under him. Marc is mentally riding faster than the actual bike is reacting... once he gets the 2 combined... he may very well be unstoppable! I hope they all stay healthy/injury free and no more crashes for the rest of the season...

Hats off to MM93, finally somebody riding the socks off of the Honda , is this the end of the smooth style riding? Can anyone beat MM or will it take a wild and eager rider on a factory Honda to beat him. Or a drastically changed Yamaha ? Point and squirt or just smoother and better on the brakes?

If you have the power the beat the Yamaha at the end of the straight and screw up the the Yamaha getting away, a prerequisite for this is a scrapping mind set , then potentially you could win every race. Until the Yamaha can match you on acceleration and braking then you both have to scrap it till the end.

I don't think Lorenzo has the mechanical tools to pose a challenge ....anymore.

Wow I can't understand that I gave up on the Yamaha so quickly. Might have to think some more and have more faith. The way it looks to me now is that MM in this form on that bike could easily win the rest of the races, I say easily because that is how it looks, ragged but easy.

Only way Lorenzo can win championship is to force Marquez into a mistake and he fails to finish in points. Risky for Lorenzo but he has nothing to lose with such a points deficit.

Wow.... that is all I can say. Marc Marquez, is there anything else to say? Wow. Lorenzo and Pedrosa just have to step up their game. The Yamaha could beat him at this track. Lorenzo is going to have to find something. Pedrosa, just needs to step up. MM93 is on the same bike, complaints about not getting grip or any other problem has to be ridden around because it is the SAME BIKE!! The ROOKIE is winning. Pedrosa can too if he digs within.

Hope this is a scrap tomorrow. Lorenzo is looking like he is willing to scrap. Cannot wait.
