2013 Jerez World Superbike FP1 Results: Elias Leads Aprilia Charge

Toni Elias leads title hopefuls Eugene Laverty and Sylvain Guintoli ahead of the last race weekend of the season. Davide Giugliano demonstrates the Aprilia dominance of the session in fifth place behind Marco Melandri. Tom Sykes in sixth is just ahead of Lorenzo Lanzi on his old porky Ducati 1098R, embarassing the factory Panigales.

If I were Ducati I would quit from SBK. A 1098, with some extra kilos, is ahead of the 1199.
Very well done for Elias, I hope he finish the weekend on the top, and get a good ride for next year.

Is there really any question now that former chief designer at Ducati was incompetent? The 1199 has proven to be a total flop, with the crashing characteristics of the desmosedici gp machine.
The street bikes will be fine until the first valve adjustment. At that point, the entire bike will need to be disassembled just to reset valves.
I expect to see plenty on the used market with 22,000 miles.

because looking photos of the bike w/o fairings I think access to the heads will be a lot easier than on a trellis frame bike like my Multistrada. I can't see why you'd even need to touch the front or rear subframes.

P.S. I haven't heard any complaints at all about the Panigale's handling on the street or at track days. I think you'd need to be a world class racer running race pace to notice the lack of feedback that the GP riders are talking about.

That said, Lanzi's time on the 1098R speaks volumes. Maybe instead of the Panigale Superlight Ducati should just do a homologation special consisting of a Panigale motor in a 1098R chassis.

A few years ago, it was almost obligatory for the press to refer to Prezioso as "a genius" or at the very least "brilliant". Now he is incompetent :(

I doubt he is either, and that without knowing the environment in which he worked, no judgement should be made. It is clear that marketing issues drive design at Ducati, or else the single-sided swingarm would never have been pulled back out of the bin for the 1098. There doubtless many issues of internal politics, complicated allegiances and divided loyalties.

Gobmeier has not done better. I wish Dall'Igna the best of luck... I'm sure at some stage it will be put to him that "you may have won races at Aprilia, but you couldn't sell bikes, so no money. You are here because we know how to sell bikes. So..."

Proof (if needed) that Gigi's appointment was an absolute necessity! Maybe now the trend of style over substance will stop and we'll see some thumpers challenging for podiums again, its been a while...
