The opening MotoGP free practice session at the Australian Grand Prix in Phillip Island has been headed by Jorge Lorenzo, the Spaniard took advantage of the smooth new track surface and set a blistering benchmark time of 1:29.167. Rookie championship leader Marc Marquez was, as per usual right on Lorenzo's tail and finished the session in second place, less than a tenth behind his more senior compatriot. Alvaro Bautista and Dani Pedrosa made it an all Spanish top four as the only current MotoGP rider to have won a premier class race at the Australian circuit Valentino Rossi completed the top five.
Fellow Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow ended the session in sixth place and after his podium finish last year, will look to improve and resume his positive relationship with the Phillip Island circuit. His teammate Bradley Smith finished in an impressive seventh place ahead of Nicky Hayden, top CRT rider Randy DePuniet and Andrea Dovizioso, who rounded out the top ten.

Records
There goes the 5 year old records (Stoner qual and Hayden race). New pavement must be nice and grippy.
Nope - record stays intact
Lap Records can only be set during the race. Qualification records during qualification. Everything else is interesting but not a matter of record.
Wait and see what Sunday brings (current forecast is for showers in the afternoon).
Weather
That's pretty much what it is every year.
They're flying
Way to mention Hayden's race lap record. Casey has owned the field for years so I always thought it was pretty respectable that Nicky's lap record held up through the Stoner era at PI.
Seems both the SBK and now GP riders all agree the new surface is great. Don't remember if there were any wet sessions in Superbike so I wonder if it would get greasy in the rain.
Gateway to Hypothermia
Circuit records indeed look set to tumble across all classes this weekend, that is assuming the weather permits ;)
Dani's speed
Dani has the lowest (max) trap speed of anyone in the top 10, including De Puniet. Odd.
Bautista...
Who did he follow?? :)
