There is a lot of activity out on track at Valencia, with nineteen riders having lapped since 10am this morning. After four hours of testing, Marc Marquez has the top time, having posted a blistering lap early in the day. Marquez sits ahead of Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, with the two satellite Hondas of Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl just over half a second off the time of Marquez.
Valentino Rossi leads a brace of Yamahas, a cecond behind Marquez and a tenth of a second ahead of Bradley Smith, while Andrea Iannone is once again top Ducati.
Nicky Hayden has made his debut on the Honda production racer, but has as yet only turned 19 laps on the bike, where the others have already done at least twice that. The Forward Yamaha has also made its debut, Aleix Espargaro turning some laps on the FTR-built Yamaha-powered machine. The bike looks very different to the factory Yamaha, despite the chassis, swingarm and engine coming from the factory bike.

Hmmm
Pol Espargaro on Crutchlow's old satellite bike is over half a second quicker than Crutchlow on the factory Ducati. Good work there, Ducati...
FTR
I think I'd be more worried that Aleix Espargaro on the FTR Yamaha, straight out of the box is only 0.3 off Dovi.
So was Stoner / HRC just marketing afterall?
I understand that Stoner is a gifted rider and all, and that it is very early with more development still to come with these bikes, but the claims that the proddy Honda were going to be just a few 1/10s from the front appear now to be rather specious.
At least Yamaha seems to have done a better job of expectation managment at this point and are not underwhelming themselves.
Interesting that the open electronics of Ducati is keeping up with Cal's ride.
Lot's of things to think through!
It was Stoner
Yes it was Stoner.
Not just Stoner
Yeah, Stoner riding it and Honda mechanics who only know how to set-up the bike in order to get most out of it.
Some good performances.
Some good
Testing
Well, that Honda Production bike does not seem to be impressive at all in other people's hands. But these are it's first runs without Stoner, (who hate him or not is one special rider that can get good times out of any damn bike).
The Ducati's are... the same as they have been. The Factory Yamahas and Hondas seem to be working fine from 2013 to the 2014. Waiting for more runs from those new production Yamahas. A.Espargaro will probably get a lot out of the bike next year judging on how well he rode the Aprilia this year.
The new riders to the class Redding and P. Espargaro seem to be feeling it out. Redding to me looks comfortable with the bike for someone in such pain. I think once he is not in pain, he will start to show some true speed. Hope P.Espargaro is still holding a grudge against Marquez. Because so far, he is the only one in their generation that I have seen that could battle him in a way worth watching.
I need to see more testing to see how people get used to the bikes before getting a feel of who may be running well. But I will say I am impressed as hell by Crutchlow. He is not the fastest, but for someone riding the Ducati for the first time he is looking comfortable and confident. His mindset has been impressive.
Let's give the RCV1000R some time
Clearly I have my doubts about the production Honda, but it's way too early to pass any judgments. The bike is fresh out of the box and Hayden and Aoyama are sharing one. Redding is still very banged up and completely new to the bike.
But as far as it being consistently something like .3 seconds off the factory bikes, even with the same rider, no, I don't think so. It's maybe 20 horsepower down. That's just too much most of the time. Honda never published Stoner's times (they just stated the differential) or which version of the 213V he set them on.There are a couple of unknowns. Let's see how it develops over the course of the year.
RCV1000R
Motegi is the Honda test track. They have done a million laps around there and have a very good base setting. So very feasible that it could be within .3 sec.
Put Hayden or Hero on the Repsol bike first day no settings and they wouldn't much quicker than the 1000R if at all.
