The race was ruled a dry race as the damp track was saved from further onslaught by the clouds missing the region. This didn't stop one rider crashing out on his way to the grid, however, letting his bike wander across the grass on its own.
Fabien Foret was the unfortunate rider in the sighting lap, but it was another French Kawasaki rider on pole. Loris Baz got away from the lights and lifted the front wheel slightly, costing him the hole shot, which let Sylvain Guintoli lead the race into turn one ahead of Jonathan Rea, getting a great start to slot into second, and Tom Sykes. Loris Baz recovered from his bad start, forcing his way into fourth ahead of Marco Melandri and Davide Giugliano.
Guintoli was able to eke out a gap as the three riders behind him started a fight that would flavour the race throughout. Once an over-eager Davide Giugliano crashed his Ducati on the first lap, Marco Melandri took over the lead of the second pack, with Chaz Davies, Niccolo Canepa, Toni Elias and Alex Lowes eager to get past him.
With the fight for second giving Sylvain Guintoli a chance to lay down some good laps on the Aprilia, he took a few early risks to build what would eventually peak at a five second gap. Tom Sykes found a damp patch, running off the track and conceding a freshly-earned second place back to Jonathan Rea on the Honda, but he recovered behind his teammate Loris Baz in fourth.
In fifth place, Marco Melandri was lapping around two seconds a lap slower than the four riders in front, but his corner speed made him very difficult to pass on such a flowing track. A very eager Chaz Davies and Toni Elias kept getting thwarted by Melandri's cornering talent and whatever their hopes were would be dashed by their inability to pass the Aprilia.
By the seventh lap of twenty-one, Tom Sykes pushed past Jonathan Rea at the end of the lap and Loris Baz at the beginning of the next, and he started ticking off laps to start to close the five second gap to Sylvain Guintoli. Jonathan Rea crowbarred Loris Baz out of the way mid-corner and watched as Sykes ran away in pursuit of Guintoli.
Toni Elias and Chaz Davies finally passed Marco Melandri, but with an eighteen-second gap to close, their challenge was over. Tom Sykes, however, was only just starting. A five second gap became a four second gap, then three, then two, and as they dispatched a back marker, sixteen laps in, Sykes had reduced the gap to Guintoli to a second and a half.
As Geoff May started his lap, much further back, his EBR's engine gave up the ghost and started smoking. Red Flags were waved, maybe prematurely, but matters of safety are what they are, and the race was done.
Sylvain Guintoli won the race with five laps to go. Tom Sykes in second place said he would have caught Guintoli but wasn't sure he would have been able to pass him. Jonathan Rea in third, after nearly being collected by Loris Baz who may not have seen the red flags, said that the podium was his target, and that he hopes to find something to beat the Kawasakis, his nemeses, in the second race.
Niccolo Canepa was first Evo bike.
