Superpole one, with the top two winning a place in the second superpole session, started in 30º weather.
Toni Elias started the session fastest, setting two fast laps while David Salom and Niccolo Canepa battled for second place. Elias then put in a 1'36.018 followed by a 1'35.961 to ensure the fight was for the remaining promotional place, and that battle was won by Canepa, with Salom having to settle for 13th place on the grid.
The second session was led by Davide Giugliano and as Sylvain Guintoli started challenging the time, Giugliano recorded a 1'35.079 on a qualifying tyre and looked like he had pole position all tied up.
However, Tom Sykes, with an injured wrist and a lap that looked like it might be good enough for the front row by the midway point, tied up the last two sectors and nailed a 1'34.883 to the mast, securing another Sykes pole position and toppling Troy Corser's pole record from 2010.
Tom Sykes headed the front row, with Davide Giugliano and Sylvain Guintoli filling the second and third places. Loris Baz ended up in the place behind Sykes, while the Aprilias of Marco Melandri and Toni Elias rounded out the top six.
