2014 Portimão World Superbike Race One Results: Grey Skies Threaten

Grey skies loomed over the grid as most of the bikes lined up, with the EBRs starting from the pit lane with new engines ahead of their home round in Laguna Seca. The temperature was down on yesterday even if the wind wasn't.

Jonathan Rea took the lead at turn one, followed by Marco Melandri from the second row. Tom Sykes and Chaz Davies battled for third place, with Sykes behind Rea and Melandri with his teammate Loris Baz ahead of Davies and Sylvain Guintoli. Sykes slipped into second place behind Rea on the third lap as the light dropped with the clouds creeping in.

Rea led for three laps, but on the fourth lap, as they slipstreamed towards turn one, Melandri and Sykes powered past with Sykes ominously taking the lead.

The top six grouped together as a tight bunch until the eight lap when Sykes finally got a one second gap from Melandri while Baz slipped past Rea with Guintoli and Davies ahead of Leon Haslam closing the gap, hoping to make it a seven-bike convoy at the front.

With a bit of a scuffle on lap nine, Rea, Baz and Melandri all tried to change places as Guintoli eased Davies off his line to pass.

On lap eleven, the lap times slowed as white flags were shown, and Tom Sykes's four second lead dropped to three seconds ahead of a man unafraid of limited adhesion, his teammate Loris Baz, dragging Melandri and Rea with him. Sykes, as the man in the lead, was the first to have to deal with the new conditions, and this allowed the men behind him to close the gap to under two seconds.

While the gap at the front was closing, Leon Haslam had caught the leading group and followed Chaz Davies past Jonathan Rea but as he went into a tight gap Davies opportunistically left open, he lost grip on the front tyre and low-sided underneath Davies and took them both out. They both rejoined the race, but ultimately, Davies would return to the pits and not finish the race.

Sylvain Guintoli used the slippery conditions to get past Loris Baz for second place and try to catch Tom Sykes. Guintoli looked like he was willing to risk a crash to catch Sykes but then the sun returned and Sykes settled back into 1'44 laps and managed his lead. Loris Baz held off Marco Melandri, not letting the Italian close in under three tenths of a second for one of his famous race-end lunges.

Tom Sykes crossed the like over two seconds ahead of Sylvain Guintoli with Loris Baz in third place, while David Salom's Evo victory was only fourteen thousandths of a second ahead of the now fit Sylvain Barrier.

The tricky conditions didn't change the result for Sykes at the front, but the French duo of Guintoli and Baz are confident riders when it rains and they were able to take full advantage of a mid-race damp spell, with Melandri and Rea losing out in fourth and fifth.

Tom Sykes once again increases his title lead, but the men second and third in the championship were on the podium with him.
